It is reported that the pineal gland and its main hormone melatonin may have a role in the regulation of ghrelin synthesis in the brain. Stomach is the place where ghrelin is predominantly expressed and secreted. One aim of this study was to investigate possible effects of pinealectomy and melatonin treatment on gastric ghrelin amount. The studies on the effects of the pineal gland on leptin and ghrelin arises the question whether the pineal gland has also effects on the other energy-regulatory peptides such as peptide YY (PYY) and neuropeptide Y (NPY). Therefore, we also aimed to investigate the changes in the immunohistochemical staining of intestinal PYY and hypothalamic NPY following pinealectomy and melatonin treatment. Serum PYY levels were also investigated. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups as sham-operated (SHAM), sham-operated with melatonin treatment (SHAM-MT), pinealectomised (PNX) and melatonin-treated PNX (PNX-MT) groups. The cells immunostained for ghrelin were abundant throughout the gastric mucosa in all the groups. Neither pinealectomy nor exogenous melatonin affected significantly immunohistochemical staining of ghrelin in stomach. Pinealectomy resulted in a significant increase in immunohistochemical staining of PYY in ileum. The results of serum PYY measurement corresponded closely to the data obtained by immunohistochemical analysis of PYY in ileum, being significantly lower and higher in SHAM and PNX groups, respectively. Pinealectomy caused a decrease in NPY synthesis in ARC as understood from low immunohistochemical staining of NPY. Melatonin treatment increased NPY synthesis in SHAM rats and restored reduction in NPY synthesis caused by pinealectomy. In conclusion, the pineal gland and its main hormone melatonin can be suggested to have a role in the regulation of NPY synthesis in ARC and PYY in gastrointestinal system.  相似文献

We investigated individual and combined effects of salinity, soil boron (B), silicon (Si) and salicylic acid (SA) on the activities of major antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT and ascorbate peroxidase, APX) and non-enzymatic antioxidants (AA), proline, chlorophyll, anthocyanin, H2O2 concentration, stomatal resistance (SR), lipid peroxidation (MDA), membrane permeability (MP), and the uptake of sodium (Na), chloride (Cl), boron and Si of spinach plants. In general, salinity significantly increased H2O2 and proline concentrations, antioxidant activity, membrane permeability, lipid peroxidation and SR of the spinach plants, indicating that they were stressed, whereas application of B only increased proline concentration. However, plant fresh weights did not decline with either treatment. The application of Si decreased H2O2 and increased the activity of SOD and CAT. The application of SA increased SOD activity. Neither SA nor Si had any effect on the proline concentration, or MP. However, application of Si increased chlorophyll concentration and decreased lipid peroxidation (MDA concentration). Si treatment had no effect on SR. The concentration of B in the tissues, which was strongly increased by B treatment, was decreased by NaCl. As a result of salinity, concentrations of Na+ and Cl ions were increased in the plant tissues, and application of Si slightly increased these concentrations. These results indicate that exogenous Si application increases stress tolerance of spinach, a plant that is naturally reasonably resistant to combined salinity and B toxicity, by the enhancement of antioxidant mechanisms that reduce membrane damage. Exogenous SA has a less obvious effect, although the levels of salinity and boron stress applied were not sufficient in this experiment to reduce plant fresh weight.  相似文献

Flexural properties of repaired heat‐polymerising acrylic resin after wetting with monomer and acetone Objectives: Repair strength can be improved by treating fractured surfaces of a denture. Background: This study investigated flexural properties of heat‐polymerised acrylic resin specimens repaired with auto‐polymerising and visible light curing (VLC) resins after the repair surfaces were wetted with monomers or acetone. Materials and Methods: Fifty‐four specimens (65 × 10 × 2.5 mm) were prepared and 48 of them were sectioned to simulate denture fracture. Butt‐joint designed repair surfaces were wetted with heat‐, auto‐polymerising monomers and acetone for 180 s and repaired with auto‐polymerising and VLC resins. After repairs, specimens were subjected to three‐point bending test and flexural strength, strain, fracture load, modulus of elasticity and deflection values were recorded. Data were analysed with Student t and LSD tests (p ≤ 0.05). Results: Overall flexural strength, strain, fracture load and deflection values of specimens repaired with VLC resin were significantly higher than the specimens repaired with auto‐polymerising resin for all types of wetting agent (p < 0.05). Within the wetting agents, heat‐ and auto‐polymerising monomers produced the best mechanical properties, while wetting with acetone did not provide superior effect over both monomers. Conclusion: In clinical use, wetting the repair surfaces may result in stronger repairs. The use of bonding agent in VLC resin repairs in combination with wetting agent results in improved flexural properties.  相似文献

The anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic wastes is considered an efficient method for managing the world’s energy shortages and resolving contemporary environmental problems. However, the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass represents a barrier to maximizing biogas production. The purpose of this review is to examine the extent to which sequencing methods can be employed to monitor such biofuel conversion processes. From a microbial perspective, we present a detailed insight into anaerobic digesters that utilize lignocellulosic biomass and discuss some benefits and disadvantages associated with the microbial sequencing techniques that are typically applied. We further evaluate the extent to which a hybrid approach incorporating a variation of existing methods can be utilized to develop a more in-depth understanding of microbial communities. It is hoped that this deeper knowledge will enhance the reliability and extent of research findings with the end objective of improving the stability of anaerobic digesters that manage lignocellulosic biomass.  相似文献

The effects of seasonal and sexual differences on the levels of macro, trace element, and toxic metal levels in Mullus barbatus were investigated using the ICP-MS. The quantity relationships of macro elements were found as K>P>Na>Ca>Mg for male, P>K>Na>Ca>Mg in female; the quantity relationships of trace elements were determined as Fe>Zn>Mn>Mo>Se>Cu>Ni>Co in male, Fe>Zn>Mn>Se>Cu>Ni>Mo>Co in female; and the quantity relationship of toxic elements were found as As>Pb>Cd in both male and female. Macro, trace, and toxic metal levels showed no significant differences (p > .05) in terms of sexuality, but demonstrated seasonal differences (p > .05). Overall, the highest level of macro elements was determined in the autumn, while the high level of trace elements was measured in the winter. The As, Cd, and Pb levels in the muscle tissue of red mullet fish were higher than acceptable limits. However, when the Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) and Estimated Weekly Intake (EWI) of both toxic metals are considered, they appear to be below acceptable limits. As a result, it was determined that the red mullet had been contaminated with toxic metals (Cd and Pb) but their levels according to EDI and EWI were below the limit.  相似文献

Stereoselective and efficient synthesis of hydroxymethyl-substituted rac-quercitols (1315) was achieved, starting from cis-furan (Kobayashi, 2008) with photooxygenation reaction, which is readily available by the reduction of cis-phtalic anhydride. α- and β-Glucosidase enzyme activity of the target molecules was evaluated and good inhibitor activity was seen. Recent studies show the essential health benefits associated with vitamin K, especially menaquinone-7 (MK-7). These benefits include reducing risks of cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, and even cancer. However, MK-7 production on an industrial level is only possible through bacterial fermentation and also current static fermentation strategies are not potent enough with difficulties to scale up. Biofilm reactors, however, may be a practical alternative. Biofilm reactors provide a controlled environment for the microorganisms to form mature and robust biofilms that enable them to produce value-added products with enhanced efficiencies. In this study, fed-batch addition of glucose and glycerol were investigated to the base media in biofilm reactors, as carbon source addition seemed crucial in batch fermentations. Results indicated that fed-batch strategies can be significantly effective in glucose-based medium, increasing the end-product concentrations to 28.7 ± 0.3 mg/L of MK-7 which was 2.3 fold higher than the level produced in suspended-cell bioreactors and renders the biofilm reactors as a potential replacement for static fermentation strategies. Moreover, morphological changes of B. subtilis were tracked during the 12-day long fermentation runs and finally, SEM investigations confirmed significant biofilm and extracellular matrices formed on the plastic composite support (PCS) in the biofilm reactors. In conclusion, biofilm reactors especially with fed-batch fermentation regimes seem to be an effective tool for MK-7 production at industrial scales.
