A coiling-inducing factor was isolated from tendrils of Bryonia dioica Jacq. and identified by infrared, 1H-, 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry as -linolenic acid. When applied to detached tendrils, exogenous -linolenic acid, but not linoleic acid or oleic acid, induced tendril coiling. Further investigations showed that metabolites of -linolenic acid, jasmonic acid and, even more so, methyljasmonate, are highly effective inducers of tendril coiling in B. dioica. Methyljasmonate was most active when administered by air and, in atmospheric concentrations as low as 40–80 nM, induced a full free-coiling response with kinetics similar to mechanical stimulation. Even atmospheric levels as low as 4–5 nM methyljasmonate were still found to be significantly active. The anti-cancer drug tamoxifen is a potent inhibitor of lipid peroxidation induced by Fe(III)-ascorbate in ox-brain phospholipid liposomes. Similar anti-oxidant effects, but with varying potencies, are also shown by 4-hydroxytamoxifen, cholesterol, ergosterol and 17-β-oestradiol. We now describe a computer-graphic fitting technique that demonstrates a structural similarity between the five compounds. In addition, we have quantified the differences (relative to cholesterol) between the anti-oxidant activities of the compounds in terms of a novel expression reffered to here as the cholesterol coefficient (Cc) Finally, we discuss how the inhibitory effect of tamoxifen on lipid peroxidation may result from a membrane stabilization that is associated with a decrease in membrane fluidity. This action may be related to the anti-proliferative effect exerted by tamoxifen on cancer and fungal cells.  相似文献

Detection of MR signals with surface coils provides increased signal-to-noise ratio for superficial structures relative to detection by circumferential coils, permitting improved spatial resolution. Different geometries of surface coils can be used for different regions. Coils that are flat or curved to fit body contours are good for general imaging, with a range of coil sizes useful for structures of different size or depth. Solenoidal coils are useful for imaging protruding structures such as breasts, while smaller versions of conventional circumferential coils that can be slipped over limbs are useful for imaging extremities.  相似文献

Stigmatic surfaces of about 250 species from more than 100 families were examined by scanning electron microscopy. There are five main groups which differ by the amount of secretion, the morphology of the surface and the distribution of receptive cells. The types of stigmatic surfaces are often remarkably constant on the family level.Ericaceae andLiliaceae are examples for very heterogenous families. Particular interest was paid to heteromorphic (heterostylous and cleistogamous) species. In most heterostylous species there is a close morphological correlation between the stigmatic surface and the sculpture of compatible pollen. Heterostyly was established for the genusGoniolimon. The dimorphism of plants with chasmogamous and cleistogamous flowers is a phenomenon which is not comparable to the polymorphism of heterostylous forms.

We estimated age at attainment of sexual maturity and examined reproductive seasonality for male spotted dolphins, Stenella attenuata , from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Maturity was determined by histological examination of testes. Average age at sexual maturation was 14.7 yr (the mean of two readers' age estimates). Testis and epididymis weight and seminiferous tubule diameters were reliable indicators of maturity, whereas age, length and color phase were less reliable. Seasonality was determined by changes in testis and epididymis weight, relative quantity of spermatids and spermatozoa, and lumen diameter, as well as an index of testis development (weight of the right testis and epididymis divided by length of the right testis). Testis and epididymis weights and index values peaked in July and August, midway between two predicted mating seasons for the northern offshore stock, but spermatozoa levels were elevated during the predicted breeding seasons.  相似文献

In a 24 h kinetic study docosahexaenoic acid (DCHA, C22:6n-3) or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n-3) were given in a single dose to healthy male volunteers. PGI3-M, the main urinary metabolite of prostaglandin I3 was below the detection limit in the control periods, but was excreted already in the first 4 h after ingestion of DCHA or EPA and decreased thereafter. Excretion of PGI2-M did not change significantly. In a second dietary trial DCHA and EPA were given cross-over to 7 healthy male volunteers for 6 days. PGI3-M was formed after DCHA and EPA in amounts of 35 and 20 % of PGI2-M and showed a considerable interindividual variation. The structure of PGI3-M was verified by independant biochemical synthesis. Our data indicate that dietary DCHA is retroconverted to EPA in man, which is quickly transformed - like dietary EPA itself - to prostaglandin I3. DCHA may therefore serve as a precursor fatty acid for EPA and its cyclooxygenated and lipoxygenated products.  相似文献

The electrical conductivity (EC) of milk is mainly a function of the electrolyte concentration in the milk and therefore raised in mastitis. The present investigation was aimed at elaborating, if possible, a diagnostic model for screening purposes based on EC determinations and consistent with the diagnostic procedures and interpretations commonly used in laboratory milk diagnosis in the Nordic countries (Klastrup 1975). According to this diagnosis (here called reference diagnosis) cell numbers above 300,000/ml (cell count or the corresponding CMT-score) in foremilk quarter samples during the main part of the lactation period and significantly above the lowest value on within-udder comparison during late lactation are considered indicative of mastitis and bacteriological examinations are made when called for.  相似文献

alpha-L-Fucosidase from serum of humans with either high or low enzyme activity was separately purified. the enzyme from either source had virtually the same heat stability and pH activity profile. It has been widely reported that alpha-L-fucosidase in crude sera from individuals with high and low enzyme activity differed with respect to heat stability and activity at pH 4 relative to activity at pH 5, the pH optimum of the enzyme. We investigated this discrepancy and found that both the heat stability and relative activity at pH 4 of alpha-L-fucosidase from sera with either high or low enzyme activity was dependent upon enzyme concentration. With decreasing enzyme concentration, the enzyme was more heat labile and had less relative activity at pH 4. Consequently, if the data obtained using high and low enzyme activity sera are compared on the basis of equivalent amounts of serum instead of equivalent amounts of enzyme activity, differences between the enzyme from high and low activity serum would be erroneously inferred. Apparently, this is what other investigators have done. Moreover, we found that alpha-L-fucosidase can exist in heat-stable or labile species with sedimentation coefficients of 9.8 S and 4.8 S, respectively. The interconversion and relative proportion of these species is dependent upon enzyme concentration and pH.  相似文献

We have isolated cDNA clones for mouse type IV procollagen from a library constructed from total poly A+RNA of 13.5 day mouse embryo parietal endoderm (PE) cells. In Northern analysis these clones hybridise to a 6.8 kb RNA which is abundant in embryonic PE cells and in differentiated F9 teratocarcinoma cells. Hybrid selection and in vitro translation of the cDNA specific mRNA produced a single polypeptide of Mr = 165 000. This polypeptide was specifically immunoprecipitated with mouse type IV procollagen antisera and comigrated on SDS-gel electrophoresis with one of the two in vitro synthesised chains of type IV procollagen. Undifferentiated F9 teratocarcinoma cells can be induced by retinoic acid and dibutyryl cAMP to differentiate in vitro into endoderm-like cells which resemble mouse PE cells in synthesising large amounts of basement membrane proteins, including type IV procollagen. Here we show, using one of the cDNA clones as a probe for type IV procollagen, that an increase in cellular concentration of type IV procollagen mRNA occurs within 24 to 48 hours of induction, reaching a constant high level by 72 hours.  相似文献
