The history of anthropology is a growing field of study within the discipline itself. Our series ‘Key Informants on the History of Anthropology’ contributes to the discussion of how anthropology, as it is understood and practised today, evolved and took shape. In the following invited contribution Marc Augé, Professor of Anthropology at École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, reflects back on his work in Africa, in light of his more recent explorations of contemporary global issues. He observes how history intervenes also with previous research ‘as if the facts which I observed in former times were only taking on their full meaning today’. This relationship between past and present research reinforces his faith in social anthropology as a discipline that is particularly well suited to address contemporary issues of globalisation.  相似文献

An emerging paradigm in sustainable biotechnique is the use of mutualists to enhance plant growth and secondary metabolism. Our objective was to determine impact of two groups of fungal mutualists on growth and phytochemistry of Echinacea purpurea. Growth, development, and phytochemical concentration were measured in greenhouse-grown 12-week-old plants colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Rhizophagus intraradices and Gigaspora margarita) or the endophytic entomopathogen, Beauveria bassiana. In one experiment, all measured growth parameters were increased in mycorrhizal plants. Biomass of AMF-colonized plants was over 13-fold greater than non-mycorrhizal controls receiving the same levels of phosphorous, and over 4-fold greater than non-mycorrhizal controls given additional phosphorous. Endophytic colonization by B. bassiana had minor effects on growth. Colonization by AMF and B. bassiana alone or in combination altered concentrations of phytochemicals (pigments, polyphenolics, alkylamides, and terpenes). Mycorrhizal plants produced up to 4.6-fold higher concentration of polyphenolics. Specific alkylamides increased 1.7 fold in plants colonized only with B. bassiana and up to a 2.4-fold increase in plants colonized by both mutualists. Changes in other phytochemical classes were related to differences in plant size induced by AMF. Phytochemical content (concentration × biomass) was increased up to 30-fold in mycorrhizal plants. Phytochemical relationships to plant biomass were confirmed in a second experiment in which non-mycorrhizal plants were fertilized to produce biomass equivalent to that of mycorrhizal plants. Based on this study, mycorrhizal colonization of E. purpurea enhances phytochemical content; this has major implications for the natural product industries and growers of E. purpurea.  相似文献

Genome scans of population differentiation identify candidate loci for adaptation but provide little information on how selection has influenced the genetic structure of these loci. Following a genome scan, we investigated the nature of the selection responsible for the outlying differentiation observed between populations of the marine mussel Mytilus edulis at a leucine/arginine polymorphism (L31R) in the antimicrobial peptide MGD2. We analysed DNA sequence polymorphisms, allele frequencies and population differentiation of polymorphisms closely linked to L31R, and pairwise and third‐order linkage disequilibria. An outlying level of population differentiation was observed at L31R only, while no departure from panmixia was observed at linked loci surrounding L31R, as in most of the genome. Selection therefore seems to affect L31R directly. Three hypotheses can explain the lack of differentiation in the chromosomal region close to L31R: (i) hitchhiking has occurred but migration and recombination subsequently erased the signal, (ii) selection was weak enough and recombination strong enough to limit the hitchhiking effect to a very small chromosomal region or (iii) selection acted on a pre‐existing polymorphism (i.e. standing variation) at linkage equilibrium with its background. Linkage equilibrium was observed between L31R and linked polymorphisms in every population analysed, as expected under the three hypotheses. However, linkage disequilibrium was observed in some populations between pairs of loci located upstream and downstream to L31R, generating a complex pattern of third‐order linkage disequilibria which is best explained by the hypothesis of selection on a pre‐existing polymorphism. We hypothesise that selection could be either balanced, maintaining alleles at different frequencies depending on the pathogen community encountered locally by mussels, or intermittent, resulting in sporadic fluctuations in allele frequency.  相似文献

Background  

Environmental parental effects can have important ecological and evolutionary consequences, yet little is known about genetic variation among populations in the plastic responses of offspring phenotypes to parental environmental conditions. This type of variation may lead to rapid phenotypic divergence among populations and facilitate speciation. With respect to density-dependent phenotypic plasticity, locust species (Orthoptera: family Acrididae), exhibit spectacular developmental and behavioural shifts in response to population density, called phase change. Given the significance of phase change in locust outbreaks and control, its triggering processes have been widely investigated. Whereas crowding within the lifetime of both offspring and parents has emerged as a primary causal factor of phase change, less is known about intraspecific genetic variation in the expression of phase change, and in particular in response to the parental environment. We conducted a laboratory experiment that explicitly controlled for the environmental effects of parental rearing density. This design enabled us to compare the parental effects on offspring expression of phase-related traits between two naturally-occurring, genetically distinct populations of Locusta migratoria that differed in their historical patterns of high population density outbreak events.  相似文献

During drying, mycorrhizal plants often maintain higher stomatalconductance (gs) than similarly-sized and -nourished non-mycorrhizalplants, but the mechanism of mycorrhizal influence remains unclear.Several hydraulic and non-hydraulic factors previously implicatedin control of stomatal behavior during drought were measured,to learn which are affected when roots of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata[L.] Walp. cv. White Acre) are extensively colonized by Glomusintraradices Schenck and Smith isolate UT143. At low soil watercontents (), mycorrhizal plants maintained higher gs, transpirationand shoot water potential () than non-mycorrhizal plants. Thesehigher foliar water status characters were associated with lowerxylemsap abscisic acid concentrations ([ABA]) and lower ABAfluxes to leaves in mycorrhizal plants at low soil . Stomatalconductance was most closely correlated with xylem-sap [ABA],ABA flux to leaves and shoot . Stomatal conductance was notcorrelated with xylemsap concentrations of calcium or zeatinriboside equivalents, or with xylem-sap pH, nor were these xylem-sapconstituents affected by mycorrhizal symbiosis. Stomata of mycorrhizaland non-mycorhizal leaves showed similar sensitivities to ABA,whether leaves were intact or detached. It is concluded thatmycorrhizal fungi probably increased the capability of rootsystems to scavenge water in drier soil, resulting in less strainto foliage and hence higher gs, and shoot at particular soil. We propose that mycorrhizal colonization of roots alters nonhydraulic root to shoot communication of soil drying. Split-root rose (Rosa hybrida L. cv Samantha) plants—one side of the root system colonized by Glomus intraradices Schenck & Smith, the other side nonmycorrhizal—displayed different stomatal conductances upon partial drying, depending upon whether mycorrhizal or nonmycorrhizal roots were dried. No differences in leaf water status were observed among control plants and those whose mycorrhizal or nonmycorrhizal roots were dried.  相似文献

The effect of training on VO2 max, endurance capacity (EC) and ventilation during maximal exercise (VE max) were studied in 17 normal subjects aged 21--51 years. At the beginning of the study 11 of the subjects (eight women and three men) were untrained (U) and six others (three women and three men) trained regulatory (T). A maximal intensity exercise (on a cycle ergometer) which could be sustained for 45 min (MIE45) was performed three times per week for 6 weeks; the total mechanical work (TMW) corresponding to the MIE45 per session varied between 3.14 and 9.24 kJ . kg-1. Before training, VO2 max (a), VEmax (b), and TMW (c) were higher in T than in U subjects. Training increased these variables in most of the subjects; the increase being significantly higher (mean +/- SEM) in U (a = +29.9 +/- 3.8%; b = 49.6 +/- 6.5%; c = 47 +/- 6.9%) than in T subjects (a = 6.6 +/- 3.8%; b = 17.5 +/- 3.6+; c = 19.1 +/- 2.8%). In all but three cases the % increase of TMW was higher than that of VO2 max, suggesting a higher sensitivity of TMW in measuring EC. The significant increase in VE max, maximal voluntary ventilation, peak flows (inspiratory and expiratory) and static maximum voluntary ventilation, peak flows (inspiratory and expiratory) and static maximum pressures indicate that this training protocol improves in healthy subjects the performance of respiratory muscles as well.  相似文献
