Using long-term data on two forest rodent species [the bank voleClethrionomys glareolus (Schreber, 1780) and the yellow-necked mouseApodemus flavicollis (Melchior, 1834)] from the Białowieża Primeval Forest (E Poland), we decompose the annual density-dependent and density-independent structures into their seasonal components. For this purpose we adopt a state-space modelling approach explicitly incorporating sampling stochasticity. As density-independent factors we use the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) — a proxy variable for the overall climatic condition — and data on annual seed production. We find a weak effect of the NAO in the annual models for both species as well as during the winter in the seasonal model forC. glareolus. The effect of the NAO disappears, however, when seed-crops are incorporated into the models (for both the annual and the seasonal — suggesting that NAO primarily affects seed production). Seed production enters the models with a positive effect during the winter only, suggesting that the among-year variation in rodent density is primarily accounted for by differences in seed-production, particularly oak seeds. ForA. flavicollis, a slightly positive effect of hornbeam also appears in the summer dynamics. The obtained results are discussed on the basis of earlier studies on the same populations, on the same species studied elsewhere as well as on the basis of general ecological insight.

1. During the last centuries, the breeding range of the great snipe Gallinago media has declined dramatically in the western part of its distribution. To examine present population dynamics in the Scandinavian mountains, we collected and analysed a 19-year time series of counts of great snipe males at leks in central Norway, 1987-2005. 2. The population showed large annual fluctuations in the number of males displaying at lek sites (range 45-90 males at the peak of the mating season), but no overall trend. 3. We detected presence of direct density-dependent mechanisms regulating this population. Inclusion of the density-dependent term in a Ricker-type model significantly improved the fit with observed data (evaluated with Parametric Bootstrap Likelihood Ratio tests and Akaike's Information Criterion for small sample size). 4. An analysis of (a number of a priori likely) environmental covariates suggests that the population dynamics were affected by conditions influencing reproduction and survival of offspring during the summer, but not by conditions influencing survival at the wintering grounds in Africa. This is in contrast to many altricial birds breeding in the northern hemisphere, and supports the idea that population dynamics of migratory nidifugous birds are more influenced by conditions during reproduction. 5. Inclusion of these external factors into our model improved the detectability of density dependence. This illustrates that allowing for external effects may increase statistical power of density dependence tests and thus be of particular importance in relatively short time series. 6. In our best model of the population dynamics, two likely density-independent offspring survival covariates explained 47.3% of the variance in great snipe numbers (predation pressure estimated by willow grouse reproductive success and food availability estimated by the amount of precipitation in June), whereas density dependence explained 35.5%. Demographic stochasticity and unidentified environmental stochasticity may account for the remaining 17.2%.  相似文献

Ruminants depend on efficient physical degradation of forage through chewing to increase the surface area of the food particles presented to the microflora. Fossil evidence suggests that increased molar height is an adaptation for wear tolerance in dry ecosystems with sparse vegetation, but no study has shown selection pressure for hypsodonty in contemporary ruminants. We explored the relationships between particle size in rumen, tooth wear (scanned molar occlusal topography), age and body mass of female Svalbard reindeer living in an arctic desert at 78 degrees latitude on Svalbard. We predicted that (H1) if the rumen particle size is determined mainly by constraints due to tooth wear, and if tooth wear is mainly a function of age, average particle size in rumen should increase with age. From allometric relations it is known that larger individuals can survive on a lower-quality diet, we therefore predicted (H2) larger particle sizes with increases in (ln) body mass, irrespective of age and wear. Lastly, if there is a trade-off between growth and tooth wear in dry ecosystems (a selection pressure for hypsodonty), we predicted (H3) that teeth of heavier animals should be more worn than those of lighter animals of the same age. The proportion of small particles (<1.0 mm) decreased rapidly with increasing age (consistent with H1). Heavier females within an age class had more worn teeth (consistent with H3) than lighter ones. A close-to-isometric relationship between particle size and body mass suggested that heavier animals partly compensated for reduced tooth efficiency by chewing more. We provide the first evidence of a trade-off between fast early growth and wear (a somatic cost) of a senescence-related trait--the structure and height of the molar--in a wild ruminant inhabiting an arctic desert where selection pressure for increased tooth height is expected. This suggests that foraging conditions are more extreme than the environment in which the species originally evolved.  相似文献

The cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae, has developed a chemical defence system that exploits and mimics that of its host plants, involving sequestration of the major plant secondary metabolites (glucosinolates). Like its host plants, the aphid produces a myrosinase (beta-thioglucoside glucohydrolase) to catalyse the hydrolysis of glucosinolates, yielding biologically active products. Here, we demonstrate that aphid myrosinase expression in head/thoracic muscle starts during embryonic development and protein levels continue to accumulate after the nymphs are born. However, aphids are entirely dependent on the host plant for the glucosinolate substrate, which they store in the haemolymph. Uptake of a glucosinolate (sinigrin) was investigated when aphids fed on plants or an in vitro system and followed a different developmental pattern in winged and wingless aphid morphs. In nymphs of the wingless aphid morph, glucosinolate level continued to increase throughout the development to the adult stage, but the quantity in nymphs of the winged form peaked before eclosion (at day 7) and subsequently declined. Winged aphids excreted significantly higher amounts of glucosinolate in the honeydew when compared with wingless aphids, suggesting regulated transport across the gut. The higher level of sinigrin in wingless aphids had a significant negative impact on survival of a ladybird predator. Larvae of Adalia bipunctata were unable to survive when fed adult wingless aphids from a 1% sinigrin diet, but survived successfully when fed aphids from a glucosinolate-free diet (wingless or winged), or winged aphids from 1% sinigrin. The apparent lack of an effective chemical defence system in adult winged aphids possibly reflects their energetic investment in flight as an alternative predator avoidance mechanism.  相似文献

Evolutionary models of sex ratio adjustment applied to mammals have ignored that females may gain indirect genetic benefits from their mates. The differential allocation hypothesis (DAH) predicts that females bias the sex ratio of their offspring towards (more costly) males when breeding with an attractive male. We manipulated the number of available males during rut in a polygynous ungulate species, the reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), and found that a doubling of average male mass (and thus male attractiveness) in the breeding herd increased the proportion of male offspring from approximately 40 to 60%. Paternity analysis revealed indeed that males of high phenotypic quality sired more males, consistent with the DAH. This insight has consequences for proper management of large mammal populations. Our study suggests that harvesting, by generating a high proportion of young, small and unattractive mates, affects the secondary sex ratio due to differential allocation effects in females. Sustainable management needs to consider not only the direct demographic changes due to harvest mortality and selection, but also the components related to behavioural ecology and opportunities for female choice.  相似文献

Analysis of differential gene expression in salmon (Salmo salar) blood following infection with the monogenean parasite Gyrodactylus salaris, resulted in the isolation of a thymidylate kinase gene not previously described from fish and which showed similarity to an LPS-inducible thymidylate kinase gene isolated from mouse macrophages. This salmon TYKi-like gene may play a role in an innate generalised response to pathogen infection as it was upregulated in salmon following infection with the parasite, and also in response to injection with the immunostimulants LPS and Poly I:C, used to emulate bacterial and viral infections, respectively. The possible role of this gene in the biosynthesis of mitochondrial DNA in activated macrophages, in response to G. salaris infection is discussed.  相似文献

In a preliminary study, 121 individually tagged juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) were classified according to their haemoglobin genotypes into four groups, i.e., two main haemoglobin genotypes [Hb-I(1/2), Hb-I(2/2)] and two sub-types [Hb-I(1/2b), Hb-I(2/2b)], and reared for 3 months at 10 degrees C, 13 degrees C and T-step (fish reared at 16 degrees C and then subsequently moved to 13 and later to 10 degrees C). Overall growth rates across temperatures were 10% and 19% higher in the Hb-I(2/2b), Hb-I(1/2b) sub-types compared to corresponding Hb-I(2/2) and Hb-I(1/2) main types, respectively. Individual growth rate trajectories varied between the genotypes at all temperatures studied. Our study indicates that under certain environmental conditions higher growth in the two sub-types compared to the main genotypes could be expected. This may indicate difference in other physiological characters not studied here, but seen in previous studies, i.e., oxygen affinity and competitive performance.  相似文献
