Crossed testicular ectopia, also called transverse testicular ectopia, is an uncommon congenital anomaly in which both testes migrate through a single inguinal canal toward the same hemiscrotum. More than 100 cases have been reported in the literature. This rare syndrome is commonly associated with abnormalities of genitourinary development, especially inguinal hernia and defective Müllerian regression. A conservative approach is recommended, now performed via laparoscopy. Long-term follow-up is required for assessment of fertility and early detection of testicular malignancy. The authors report a new case of crossed testicular ectopia in a 4-year-old boy who presented with right inguinal hernia and impalpable left testis.  相似文献

Using standard methods, we describe two new Drepanomonas taxa: Drepanomonas hymenofera (Horváth 1956) nov. comb., which is composed of two (biogeographical?) subspecies, viz., D. hymenofera venezuelensis nov. subspec. and D. hymenofera hymenofera (Horváth 1956), was discovered in soil from Venezuela and Iceland, respectively. Both are comparatively large-sized (50 × 20 μm and 40 × 18 μm in vivo), differing in the cortex pattern and the structure of kineties 3 and 4. We agree with Corliss (1979) and Chardez (1990) that the genus Pseudocristigera, which was established by Horváth (1956) for Drepanomonas hymenofera, is a junior synonym of Drepanomonas. Drepanomonas vasta nov. spec., which was discovered in the mud of a tree hole in Austria, is a middle-sized species (35 × 18 μm) with thick body, wide left side ridges, a single anterior dikinetid in kinety 4, and an average of 99 basal bodies; it is unique in having the dorsal side much more flattened than the ventral side, thus being cuneate in transverse view. Ontogenetic data show that the ciliary pattern of Drepanomonas is homologous to that of Leptopharynx, specifically, the structure and origin of the postoral complex. Main features for distinguishing Drepanomonas species are discussed.  相似文献

Physiologically, it is known that thioacetamide (TAA) toxicity is generally associated with hepatic fibrosis induction, complicated metabolic disorders and health problems. The capability of extracts of olive and rosemary leaves to attenuate the severe physiological disturbances induced by thioacetamide (TAA) intoxication in male rats has been evaluated. Healthy male Wistar rats were used in the present study and were divided randomly into eight groups. Rats of the first group were served as normal control. Rats of the second group were administrated with TAA. Rats of the third, fourth and fifth groups were exposed to TAA plus olive leaves extract, TAA plus rosemary leaves extract and TAA plus olive and rosemary leaves extracts respectively. The sixth, seventh and eighth groups were supplemented with olive leaves extract, rosemary leaves extract, and olive and rosemary leaves extracts respectively. After 12 weeks of experimental treatments, the levels of serum glucose, total protein, albumin and high density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly decreased, while the levels of triglycerides, cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase were statistically increased in rats exposed to TAA. Administration of the studied extracts inhibited the hematobiochemical parameters and improved the physiological disturbances induced by TAA intoxication. Additionally, most improvements were noted in rats administrated with rosemary leaves extract followed by olive and rosemary leaves extracts and olive leaves extract. These results suggested that the effect of these extracts might be due to their antioxidant activities against TAA toxicity.  相似文献

Actinobacterial isolates randomly obtained on nitrogen-free BAP medium from surface sterilized root nodules of Alnus glutinosa, Casuarina glauca and Elaeagnus angustifolia sampled from fields were reported. They were assigned on the basis of partial 16S rRNA sequences to Micromonospora, Nocardia and Streptomyces genera. The isolates have been screened for hydrolytic activities, indole acetic acid (IAA) and siderophores production, phosphate solubilization and antagonistic activities. Results suggest putative traits as plant growth promoting bacteria proprieties of the isolates that occur in unique association in root nodules of the three analysed actinorhizal host species.  相似文献

Monte Carlo simulation of electrons stopping in liquid water was used to model the penetration and quality of electron-beam irradiation incident on the full-thickness EpiDerm? skin model (EpiDermFT? MatTek, Ashland, VA). This 3D tissue model has a fully developed basement membrane separating an epidermal layer of keratinocytes in various stages of differentiation from a dermal layer of fibroblasts embedded in collagen. The simulations were motivated by a desire to selectively expose the epidermal layer to low-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation in the presence of a nonirradiated dermal layer. The variable-energy electron microbeam at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) was used as a model of device characteristics and irradiation geometry. At the highest beam energy available (90 keV), we estimate that no more than a few percent of the beam energy will be deposited in the dermal layer. Energy deposition spectra were calculated for 10-μm-thick layers near the 10th, 50th and 90th percentiles of penetration by the 90 keV electron beam. Bimodal spectra showed an increasing component of "stoppers" with increasing depth, which increases the probability of large energy deposition events. Nevertheless, screening by tissue above the layer of interest is the main factor determining energy deposited at a given depth.  相似文献

Human amylin (hA), which is toxic to islet β-cells, can self-generate H2O2, and this process is greatly enhanced in the presence of Cu(II) ions. Here we show that carbonyl groups, a marker of oxidative modification, were formed in hA incubated in the presence of Cu(II) ions or Cu(II) ions plus H2O2, but not in the presence of H2O2 alone. Furthermore, under similar conditions (i.e., in the presence of both Cu(II) ions and H2O2), hA also stimulated ascorbate radical formation. The same observations concerning carbonyl group formation were made when the histidine residue (at position 18) in hA was replaced by alanine, indicating that this residue does not play a key role. In complete contrast to hA, rodent amylin, which is nontoxic, does not generate H2O2, and binds Cu(II) ions only weakly, showed none of these properties. We conclude that the hA-Cu(II)/Cu(I) complex is redox active, with electron donation from the peptide reducing the oxidation state of the copper ions. The complex is capable of forming H2O2 from O2 and can also generate OH via Fenton chemistry. These redox properties of hA can explain its ability to stimulate copper-mediated carbonyl group and ascorbate radical formation. The formation of reactive oxygen species from hA in this way could hold the key to a better understanding of the damaging consequences of amyloid formation within the pancreatic islets of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.  相似文献

Stem cells serve as potential therapeutics due to their high proliferative capacity, low immunogenic reactivity and their differentiating capabilities. Several pre-clinical and early-stage clinical studies are carried out to treat genetic diseases, cancers and neurodegenerative disorders with promising preliminary results. However, there are still many challenges that scientists are trying to overcome such as the unclear expression profile of stem cells in vivo, the homing of stem cells to the site of injury and their potential immune-reactivity. Prospective research lies in gene editing of autologous stem cells in vitro and safe injection of these modified cells back into patients. Here, we review the clinical trials executed using stem cell therapy in an attempt to cure challenging diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.  相似文献
