Atrazine (ATZ) is a selective triazine herbicide used primarily for preemergent weed control in corn, sorghum, and sugar cane production. It is one of the most widely used herbicides in North America. Some research published over the last decade suggests that chronic exposure to environmentally relevant ATZ concentrations can adversely impact gonadal development and/or sexual differentiation in amphibians and fish, while other studies report no effect, or moderate effects. As a result, contrasting conclusions have been published regarding the potential effects of the herbicide ATZ on aquatic species. Two near‐identical 4‐month studies in 2009 (Study I) and 2010 (Study II) were performed investigating the potential for chronic ATZ exposure to affect zebrafish (Danio rerio) sexual development and differentiation. Zebrafish were chronically exposed to 0, 0.1, 1, 10 μM ATZ or 1 nM 17ß‐estradiol (E2). Fish were histologically examined to assign gender and to evaluate potential impacts of E2 or ATZ on gonadal development. Exposure to E2 consistently resulted in a significantly higher proportion of female fish to normal male fish when compared to unexposed fish (both studies). In both studies, ATZ exposure did not significantly influence the percentage of female or male fish when compared to unexposed fish. A greater percentage of abnormally developed male fish and fish lacking differentiated gonadal tissue was observed in Study II E2 exposures but not in ATZ exposures. Together, these studies indicate that long‐term exposure to ATZ at or above environmentally relevant concentrations does not significantly impact zebrafish gonadal development or sexual differentiation.  相似文献

Carnosine (β-alanyl-l-histidine) and anserine (β-alanyl-3-methyl-l-histidine) are abundant peptides in the nervous system and skeletal muscle of many vertebrates. Many in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that exogenously added carnosine can improve muscle contraction, has antioxidant activity, and can quench various reactive aldehydes. Some of these functions likely contribute to the proposed anti-aging activity of carnosine. However, the physiological role of carnosine and related histidine-containing dipeptides (HCDs) is not clear. In this study, we generated a mouse line deficient in carnosine synthase (Carns1). HCDs were undetectable in the primary olfactory system and skeletal muscle of Carns1-deficient mice. Skeletal muscle contraction in these mice, however, was unaltered, and there was no evidence for reduced pH-buffering capacity in the skeletal muscle. Olfactory tests did not reveal any deterioration in 8-month-old mice lacking carnosine. In contrast, aging (18–24-month-old) Carns1-deficient mice exhibited olfactory sensitivity impairments that correlated with an age-dependent reduction in the number of olfactory receptor neurons. Whereas we found no evidence for elevated levels of lipoxidation and glycation end products in the primary olfactory system, protein carbonylation was increased in the olfactory bulb of aged Carns1-deficient mice. Taken together, these results suggest that carnosine in the olfactory system is not essential for information processing in the olfactory signaling pathway but does have a role in the long-term protection of olfactory receptor neurons, possibly through its antioxidant activity.  相似文献

Summary Generally, Ca uptakes were higher and K uptakes lower for excised vetch roots as opposed to those of barley under similar conditions. This behavior was considered to be related to root ion exchange properties and Dorman theory, since the ion exchange capacity of vetch roots is considerably higher than that of barley. Metabolic inhibitors were very effective against K uptakes in contrast to Ca uptakes by both vetch and barley indicating that Ca uptake was primarily non-metabolic under these experimental conditions. The rapidity with which most of the Ca previously taken up was removed by a Ba solution suggests that, for short time periods, a quasi-reversible ion exchange relationship existed between Ba and Ca. Fundamental differences between Ca and K washout curves are attributed to this primarily non-metabolic process. This paper presents the syntax and semantics of a component-oriented rule-based language for specifying the formal models of manufacturing systems. A model captures the state of a component of the system in a set of first-order logic predicates, and it captures the semantics of the operations performed by this component in a set of rules that determine the preconditions and postconditions of an operation. The models are then used to plan the sequence of operations of each class of jobs to be manufactured by these systems. A plan-oriented fault detection and correction strategy is proposed. This strategy can automatically handle any combination of faults that may occur when monitoring the operations of manufacturing systems. A fault-tree is consulted prior to executing the scheduled operations of a plan, and the faults that affect the execution of these operations are handled subsequently. Resuming the original cyclic schedule is attempted, whenever feasible. As a proof of concept, a prototype implementation of both the main constructs of the component-oriented rule-based language and the planning and fault-recovery algorithms presented in this paper have been completed. This prototype is implemented on a Unix-based system in the Ada programming language. The specification of a manufacturing system is first expressed in the proposed language. These statements are then translated into Ada code. This code is next compiled by a Verdix Ada compiler and is executed in order to create and populate the model data structure of the system. A detailed plan of execution and a set of fault-recovery plans may then be derived for a job to be manufactured on this system.  相似文献

Vegetative nuclear division inTrichophyton terrestre Durie & Frey was studied utilizing the aceto-orcein squash technique. Nuclear division included: no directional preference to the hyphal axis; longitudinal splitting of daughter nuclei; and a haploid chromosome count of four. Interphase and prophase nuclei were morphologically similar to those of higher plants, however, various degrees of chromosome condensation and elongation were noted. Spindle pole bodies were prominent at metaphase.  相似文献

The locus for one subtype of autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA1) is closely linked (within 1-2 cM) to D6S89, which contains a highly polymorphic dinucleotide repeat sequence. D6S89 has been mapped previously to 6p24----p21.3, between the HLA and F13A1 loci. Mutant cell lines were used to correlate the absence or presence of D6S89 with cytogenetically detectable interstitial 6p deletions. The results allowed us to map D6S89 to the 6p24.2----p23.05 region. The close linkage of SCA1 to D6S89 indicates that this locus is most likely located in the 6p24----p23 segment.  相似文献
