Clines for size and stress resistance traits have been described for several Drosophila species and replicable clines across different species may indicate climatic selection. Here we consider clines in stress resistance traits in an Australian endemic species, D. serrata, by comparing levels of variation within and among isofemale lines initiated with flies collected from the eastern coast of Australia. We also consider clinical variation in chill coma recovery, a trait that has recently been shown to exhibit high levels of variation among Drosophila species. Patterns were compared with those in the cosmopolitan species D. melanogaster from the same area. Both desiccation and starvation resistance showed no clinical pattern despite heritable variation among isofemale lines. In contrast chill coma resistance exhibited a linear cline in the anticipated direction, resistance increasing with latitude. Body size was measured as wing length and body weight. Both traits showed geographic variation and strong non-linear clines with a sharp reduction in size in the tropics. These results are discussed in the context of climatic selection and evolutionary processes limiting species borders.  相似文献

Geographic variation in wing shape in female Drosophila serrata was examined by characterizing isofemale strains from 19 localities collected along a transect on the eastern coast of Australia. Shape variation was analyzed by Procrustes superimposition of landmark data followed by canonical variate analysis. The first extracted canonical variate showed a nonlinear association with latitude and accounted for 43% of the variance. There was a sharp increase in this variate at low latitudes as well as a gradual increase at high latitudes. These shape changes were associated with two landmarks at the edge of the wing. There was also a linear change in wing aspect. The isofemale heritability for two measures of shape was around 30%. Allometric relationships were weak both between localities and among isofemale strains within localities. The possibility that wing shape parameters are under selection independent of wing size is discussed.  相似文献

The effects of wing shape, wing size, and fluctuating asymmetry in these measures on the field fitness of T. nr. brassicae and T. pretiosum were investigated. Trichogramma wasps mass-reared on eggs of the factitious host Sitotroga cerealella were released in tomato paddocks and those females ovipositing on Helicoverpa spp. eggs were recaptured. Comparisons of the recaptured group with a sample from the release population were used to assess fitness. Wing data were obtained by positioning landmarks on mounted forewings. Size was then measured as the centroid size computed from landmark distances, while Procrustes analysis followed by principal component analysis was used to assess wing shape. Similar findings were obtained for both Trichogramma species: fitness of wasps was strongly related to wing size and some shape dimensions, but not to the asymmetries of these measures. Wasps which performed well in the field had larger wings and a different wing shape compared to wasps from the mass reared population. Both size and the shape dimensions were linearly associated with fitness although there was also some evidence for non-linear selection on shape. The results suggest that wing shape and wing size are reliable predictors of field fitness for these Trichogramma wasps.  相似文献

Replicate lines of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans originating from the same location in Australia were selected at two selection intensities (50%, 85% mortality) for increased resistance to desiccation, and scored for correlated responses to see if similar physiological changes were associated with the selection responses. Realized heritabilities were much higher in D. melanogaster. Selected lines of both species were more resistant than control lines to starvation and a toxic ethanol concentration. Both species also showed similar correlated responses for traits underlying the selection response: selected lines lost water at a slower rate and had reduced activity levels in a dry environment, but they did not differ in wet or dry body weight or in water content. For D. melanogaster, realized heritabilities for lines selected at 85% mortality were higher than for lines selected at 50% mortality, but there was no effect of selection intensity for D. simulans. Comparative studies of this nature may be useful in predicting the extent to which species can adapt to stress in the wild.  相似文献

The redlegged earth mite, Halotydeus destructor (Tucker, 1925: Trombidiformes, Eupodoidea, Penthaleidae), is an invasive mite species. In Australia, this mite has become a pest of winter pastures and grain crops. We report the complete mitogenome for H. destructor, the first to represent the family Penthaleidae, superfamily Eupodoidea. The mitogenome of H. destructor is 14,691 bp in size, and has a GC content of 27.87%, 13 protein‐coding genes, two rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. We explored evolutionary relationships of H. destructor with other members of the Trombidiformes using phylogenetic analyses of nucleotide sequences and the order of protein‐coding and rRNA genes. We found strong, consistent support for the superfamily Tydeoidea being the sister taxon to the superfamily Eupodoidea based on nucleotide sequences and gene arrangements. Moreover, the gene arrangements of Eupodoidea and Tydeoidea are not only identical to each other but also identical to that of the hypothesized arthropod ancestor, showing a high level of conservatism in the mitogenomic structure of these mite superfamilies. Our study illustrates the utility of gene arrangements for providing complementary information to nucleotide sequences with respect to inferring the evolutionary relationships of species within the order Trombidiformes. The mitogenome of H. destructor provides a valuable resource for further population genetic studies of this important agricultural pest. Given the co‐occurrence of closely related, morphologically similar Penthaleidae mites with H. destructor in the field, a complete mitogenome provides new opportunities to develop metabarcoding tools to study mite diversity in agro‐ecosystems. Moreover, the H. destructor mitogenome fills an important taxonomic gap that will facilitate further study of trombidiform mite evolution.  相似文献

Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) and Liriomyza sativae (Blanchard) are important pests of vegetable crops in Indonesia and are likely to spread to neighboring countries. Three pesticides (dimehypo, abamectin, and cyromazine) are currently used to control these pests, but there is little information on their effectiveness against field populations and on their impact on parasitoids controlling Liriomyza species. The toxicity of these chemicals to L. huidobrensis and three common parasitoids (Hemiptarsenus varicornis Gerault, Opius sp., and Gronotoma micromorpha Perkins) was therefore evaluated in Indonesia with mortality laboratory assays. All three chemicals were effective against larvae of three populations of L. huidobrensis with different histories of chemical exposure. Dimehypo caused mortality in adult Opius sp., G. micromorpha, and H. varicornis, whereas abamectin was toxic only at concentrations substantially higher than the field rate. Cyromazine did not influence survival of the parasitoids. A commonly used fungicide, mancozeb, had no impact on parasitoid mortality. Trials were repeated with a strain of H. varicornis from Australia and a different parasitoid (Diglyphus isaea) recently found in Australia. Neither parasitoid was influenced by mancozeb or cyromazine. Abamectin applied at field rates caused some mortality among the adults of both species, but was less toxic than chlorpyrifos. Abamectin produced lower LC50s against Australian H. varicornis than against Indonesian H. varicornis. These results suggest that cyromazine can be incorporated into Liriomyza control programs in Indonesia that conserve parasitoids, whereas dimehypo and abamectin need to be used cautiously. Local Australian parasitoids should help control L. huidobrensis as long as only cyromazine and nontoxic fungicides are applied.  相似文献

Chromosomal inversion polymorphisms continue to be identified from an increasing number of populations of insects, plants, bacteria and humans. In the fruit fly Drosophila, chromosomal polymorphisms were used in classic studies of natural selection. Recent molecular genetic studies suggest that inversion polymorphisms are dynamical systems. These studies also indicate patterns of disequilibrium and variation that are consistent with co-adapted gene complexes. Although these complexes have yet to be identified, recent studies have identified traits, such as body size, that are linked to inversion polymorphisms. Selection acting on these polymorphisms is strong because latitudinal clines in inversion frequency become re-established rapidly after a new continent is colonized. A combined molecular and phenotypic approach is helping to identify the role of inversion polymorphisms in adaptive divergence, but the genes responsible for associations between traits and inversion polymorphisms remain to be identified.  相似文献

The Hsp90 protein encoded by the Hsp83 gene is required for the development of many traits in Drosophila. Hsp83 is also thought to play a role in the expression of phenotypic and genetic variability for subsequent selection and evolutionary change. Here we examine the impact of different E(sev) and Su(Raf) Hsp83 mutants on means and phenotypic variances of invariant and variable bristle traits. One of the mutants influenced the normally invariant thoracic bristle number, while none affected invariant scutellar bristle number. E(sev) alleles consistently influenced variable bristle traits while there were fewer effects of the Su(Raf) alleles. For the variable traits, none of the Hsp83 alleles had any effect on phenotypic variance, environmental variance, or developmental stability of the bristle traits. When alleles were combined in trans-heterozygotes, there were both cumulative and complementary effects on thoracic and variable bristle trait numbers, depending on the allelic combination. Overall, the results suggest that Hsp83 mutants do not have detectable effects on the phenotypic or environmental variance of bristle traits and that complementation of E(sev) and Su(Raf) Hsp83 mutants can extend to thoracic bristles as well as previously reported effects on viability. Some allelic combinations lead to more severe effects on variable bristle trait means than do single Hsp83 mutations.  相似文献

Propolis is a natural resinous substance collected by bees from tree exudates and secretions. Its antimicrobial activity has been investigated and inhibitory action on Staphylococcus aureus growth was evaluated. The in vitro synergism between ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) and antimicrobial drugs by two susceptibility tests (Kirby and Bauer and E-Test) on 25 S. aureus strains was evaluated. Petri dishes with sub-inhibitory concentrations of EEP were incubated with 13 drugs using Kirby and Bauer method and synergism between EEP and five drugs [choramphenicol (CLO), gentamicin (GEN), netilmicin (NET), tetracycline (TET), and vancomycin (VAN)] was observed. Nine drugs were assayed by the E-test method and five of them exhibited a synergism [CLO, GEN, NET, TET, and clindamycin (CLI)]. The results demonstrated the synergism between EEP and antimicrobial drugs, especially those agents that interfere on bacterial protein synthesis.  相似文献
