Background

Despite recent achievements to reduce child mortality, neonatal deaths continue to remain high, accounting for 41% of all deaths in children under five years of age worldwide, of which over 90% occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Infections are a leading cause of death and limitations in care seeking for ill neonates contribute to high mortality rates. As estimates for care-seeking behaviors in LMICs have not been studied, this review describes care seeking for neonatal illnesses in LMICs, with particular attention to type of care sought.

Methods and Findings

We conducted a systematic literature review of studies that reported the proportion of caregivers that sought care for ill or suspected ill neonates in LMICs. The initial search yielded 784 studies, of which 22 studies described relevant data from community household surveys, facility-based surveys, and intervention trials. The majority of studies were from South Asia (n = 17/22), set in rural areas (n = 17/22), and published within the last 4 years (n = 18/22). Of the 9,098 neonates who were ill or suspected to be ill, 4,320 caregivers sought some type of care, including care from a health facility (n = 370) or provider (n = 1,813). Care seeking ranged between 10% and 100% among caregivers with a median of 59%. Care seeking from a health care provider yielded a similar range and median, while care seeking at a health care facility ranged between 1% and 100%, with a median of 20%. Care-seeking estimates were limited by the few studies conducted in urban settings and regions other than South Asia. There was a lack of consistency regarding illness, care-seeking, and care provider definitions.

Conclusions

There is a paucity of data regarding newborn care-seeking behaviors; in South Asia, care seeking is low for newborn illness, especially in terms of care sought from health care facilities and medically trained providers. There is a need for representative data to describe care-seeking patterns in different geographic regions and better understand mechanisms to enhance care seeking during this vulnerable time period. This paper reviews all information gathered from different disciplines and studies to resolve the species status within the Ceratitis FAR (Ceratitis fasciventris, Ceratitis anonae, Ceratitis rosa) complex, a group of polyphagous fruit fly pest species (Diptera, Tephritidae) from Africa. It includes information on larval and adult morphology, wing morphometrics, cuticular hydrocarbons, pheromones, microsatellites, developmental physiology and geographic distribution. The general consensus is that the FAR complex comprises Ceratitis anonae, two species within Ceratitis rosa (so-called R1 and R2) and two putatitve species under Ceratitis fasciventris. The information regarding the latter is, however, too limited to draw final conclusions on specific status. Evidence for this recognition is discussed with reference to publications providing further details.  相似文献

Abstract

Bacteriocins are small peptides that can inhibit the growth of a diverse range of microbes. There is a need to identify bacteriocins that are effective against biofilms of resistant clinical strains. The present study focussed on the efficacy of purified nisin like bacteriocin-GAM217 against extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) producing clinical strains. Bacteriocin-GAM217 when combined with curcumin and cinnamaldehyde, synergistically enhanced antibacterial activity against planktonic and biofilm cultures of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli. Bacteriocin-GAM217 and phytochemical combinations inhibited biofilm formation by >80%, and disrupted the biofilm for selected ESBL and MBL producing clinical strains. The anti-adhesion assay showed that these combinatorial compounds significantly lowered the attachment of bacteria to Vero cells and that they elicited membrane permeability and rapid killing as viewed by confocal microscopy. This study demonstrates that bacteriocin-GAM217 in combination with phytochemicals can be a potential anti-biofilm agent and thus has potential for biomedical applications.  相似文献

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a pest of fruit and vegetable production that has become established in 42 countries in Africa after its first detection in 2003 in Kenya. It is likely that this rapid expansion is partly due to the reported strong capacity for flight by the pest. This study investigated the tethered flight performance of B. dorsalis over a range of constant temperatures in relation to sex and age. Tethered flight of unmated B. dorsalis aged 3, 10 and 21 days was recorded for 1 h using a computerized flight mill at temperatures of 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36 °C. Variations in fly morphology were observed as they aged. Body mass and wing loading increased with age, whereas wing length and wing area reduced as flies aged. Females had slightly larger wings than males but were not significantly heavier. The longest total distance flown by B. dorsalis in 1 h was 1559.58 m. Frequent short, fast flights were recorded at 12 and 36 °C, but long-distance flight was optimal between 20 and 24 °C. Young flies tended to have shorter flight bouts than older flies, which was associated with them flying shorter distances. Heavier flies with greater wing loading flew further than lighter flies. Flight distances recorded on flight mills approximated those recorded in the field, and tethered flight patterns suggest a need to factor temperature into the interpretation of trap captures.  相似文献

A complex of three phosphoproteins (P0, P1 and P2) constitutes the stalk region at the GTPase center of the eukaryotic large ribosomal subunit, amongst which the protein P0 plays the most crucial role. Earlier studies have shown the functional complementation of the conditional P0-null mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (W303dGP0) with orthologous P0 genes from fungal and mammalian organisms, but not the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum. In this paper we show that the PfP0 gene from the protozoan malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum can functionally complement the conditional P0-null W303dGP0 mutant of S. cerevisiae. Unlike the above orthologous genes, PfP0 gene could also rescue the D67dGP0 strain, which in addition to being a conditional null for ScP0 gene, is a null-mutant for both ScP1alpha and beta genes. However, under stress conditions such as high temperature, salt and osmolarity, PfP0 gene could not rescue D67dGP0 strain. Ribosomes purified from W303dGP0 carrying PfP0 gene did not contain ScP1 protein, indicating a lack of binding of ScP1 to PfP0 protein. Yeast 2-hybrid analysis further confirmed the lack of binding of ScP1 to PfP0 protein. The polymerizing activities of ribosomes with ScP0 or PfP0 protein, in the absence of ScP1 protein, were found to be about 40-45% that of ribosomes with all the yeast P-proteins. In its sensitivity to the inhibitor sordarin, PfP0 was similar to the P0 protein from the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. These results indicate a closer functional relationship of P. falciparum P0 gene to fungal P0 genes.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic tuberculosis (PT) is a very rare occurrence in the setting of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. It usually occurs as a complication of miliary tuberculosis in immunodeficient individuals, particularly with HIV infections, but isolated involvement in an immunocompetent patient is extremely rare. Pancreatic involvement by tuberculosis in immunocompromised states, such as AIDS, and isolated involvement in immunocompetent patients require a high index of suspicion. Fine needle aspiration cytology under imaging guidance is highly conclusive. CASES: A patient presented with diabetes mellitus and a pancreatic mass clinically diagnosed as pancreatic carcinoma. A second patient, who was HIV seropositive, presented with generalized lymphadenopathy and a pancreatic mass, clinically diagnosed as lymphoma. These were conclusively diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) as PT under imaging guidance. After antituberculous therapy the first patient showed a dramatic improvement, whereas the second died; an autopsy was performed. Because of the atypical presentation of PT in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients, FNAC can be used as a first-line diagnostic intervention. FNAC under imaging guidance is sensitive, specific, rapid and inexpensive. It resolves the diagnostic dilemma and thus avoids major surgery for a clinically diagnosed neoplasm.  相似文献

Tropomyosins are a family of actin binding proteins encoded by a group of highly conserved genes. Humans have four tropomyosin-encoding genes: TPM1, TPM2, TPM3, and TPM4, each of which is known to generate multiple isoforms by alternative splicing, promoters, and 3' end processing. TPM1 is the most versatile and encodes a variety of tissue specific isoforms. The TPM1 isoform specific to striated muscle, designated TPM1alpha, consists of 10 exons: 1a, 2b, 3, 4, 5, 6b, 7, 8, and 9a/b. In this study, using RT-PCR with adult and fetal human RNAs, we present evidence for the expression of a novel isoform of the TPM1 gene that is specifically expressed in cardiac tissues. The new isoform is designated TPM1kappa and contains exon 2a instead of 2b. Ectopic expression of human GFP.TPM1kappa fusion protein can promote myofibrillogenesis in cardiac mutant axolotl hearts that are lacking in tropomyosin.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine adequacy with air-dried, unstained smears. STUDY DESIGN: The study was conducted on a total of 70 cases. The cases were divided into 2 groups. Group I consisted of all 70 and was analyzed by a consultant, observer A. Group II consisted of 41 cases from group I. In addition to observer A, a junior resident with 3 months' experience in pathology (observer B), analyzed the slides independently. The results were compared with those on stained smears. RESULTS: When correlated with stained smears, in group I, 55 of 58 (94.8%) cases were reported as adequate, and 11 of 12 cases (91.7%) were labeled inadequate. All were proven correct. In group II, stained smears confirmed that 33 of 35 (94.3%) were labeled adequate by observer A and 33 of 36 (91.7%) by observer B. Stained smears did not confirm 1 of 6 (16.6%) cases labeled inadequate by observer A and 1 of 5 (20%) cases by observer B. CONCLUSION: Unstained smear examination is an effective technique for determining adequacy. An inexperienced practitioner can perform it as well.  相似文献

Two rice varieties N22 (drought-tolerant) and Panidhan (drought-susceptible) were studied for the protein profiles under control, moisture stress and abscisic acid (ABA) treatments. Both qualitative and quantitative differences were observed. In control and ABA treatment, the number of polypeptides was more in N22, compared to Panidhan. However, a significant number of polypeptides were induced in Panidhan, compared to N22 under mild and severe stress.  相似文献
