In Vitro Evaluation of Actinobolin as an Antibiotic for the Treatment of Periodontal Disease

Actinobolin was evaluated in vitro by a paper disc-agar diffusion method for inhibitory activity against mixed microbial cultures obtained from patients with periodontal disease and against pure bacterial cultures tentatively identified as strains of Bacteroides melaninogenicus, Fusobacterium fusiforme, Leptotrichia buccalis, and Veillonella parvula. Every culture tested was inhibited to some degree by actinobolin. These observations suggest that actinobolin may be effective in the treatment of periodontal disease.     

Bone marrow transplantation in a patient with drug-induced aplastic anemia

A 23-year-old woman gravely ill with Pseudomonas septicemia secondary to presumed drug-induced bone marrow aplasia received marrow transplantation from two male HL-A identical sibling donors. She had a successful engraftment with excellent but temporary clinical improvement. Subsequently she succumbed to graft-versus-host disease manifested by Pseudomonas and Candida albicans septicemia, cytomegalovirus pneumonitis, three phases of dermatitis, nausea, vomiting, dysphagia, diarrhea, fever, edema and bone pain, with gradual but complete graft suppression by the 74th day after the transplantation. A second marrow transplant on the 70th day was unsuccessful.

The adenosine triphosphate content of Selenastrum capricornutum was maintained within 1.4 to 3.4 μg of adenosine triphosphate/mg (dry weight) of living biomass at different growth stages in media of different phosphorus concentrations.
