Acetate kinase activity was assayed in 13 mycoplasmas. Nine species exhibited the enzymic activity in the direction of either synthesis of acetylphosphate or adenosine triphosphate. On the other hand Mycoplasma orale, Mycoplasma arthritidis, Ureaplasma urealyticum (10 serotypes), and two strains of Anaeroplasma species exhibited only minimal levels of the enzymic activity. Two novel microgonotropens (MGTs) comprised of hairpin N-propylaminepyrrole polyamides linked to a Hoechst 33258 (Ht) analogue (3 and 4) were synthesized on solid phase by adopting an Fmoc technique using a series of HOBt mediated coupling reactions. The dsDNA-binding properties of MGTs 3 and 4 were determined by thermal denaturation experiments. Both MGTs were found to be selective for their nine-bp match dsDNA sequence 9 and were less tolerant of G/C bp substitutions in the binding region than linear progenitor MGT 1. MGT 3 was intolerant of a G/C substitution located in the middle of the binding region and did not bind to sequences 13 and 14. MGT 4 also did not bind to sequence 13, and its linker-bound Ht moiety was found to be more sensitive to a G/C substitution in the Ht-binding target, as demonstrated by the lack of binding to sequence 16. 相似文献

The effect of salinity on incorporation of amino acids into root tip protein is apparently of dual nature: in presence of salts the uptake is depressed and the normal metabolic pathways are disturbed. If the roots were grown at high salt concentration, uptake and incorporation are affected even if they are carried out in the absence of salt. NaCl and Na2SO4 affect uptake, incorporation, and metabolism of 14C leucine in different ways. There are also preliminary indications that in pea roots grown at different types of salinity, different proteins may be synthesized. Kinetin was found to inhibit incorporation of amino acids into non stressed and Na2SO4 stressed roots, but promotes uptake and incorporation of amino acids into protein in NaCl stressed tissue. It seems that there are some pronounced differences between the effects of NaCl and Na2SO4 salinities on the metabolism of pea root tissue. 相似文献

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) produce many vocalisations, including whistles that are unique to the individual producing them. Such “signature whistles” play a role in individual recognition and maintaining group integrity. Previous work has shown that humans can successfully group the spectrographic representations of signature whistles according to the individual dolphins that produced them. However, attempts at using mathematical algorithms to perform a similar task have been less successful. A greater understanding of the encoding of identity information in signature whistles is important for assessing similarity of whistles and thus social influences on the development of these learned calls. We re-examined 400 signature whistles from 20 individual dolphins used in a previous study, and tested the performance of new mathematical algorithms. We compared the measure used in the original study (correlation matrix of evenly sampled frequency measurements) to one used in several previous studies (similarity matrix of time-warped whistles), and to a new algorithm based on the Parsons code, used in music retrieval databases. The Parsons code records the direction of frequency change at each time step, and is effective at capturing human perception of music. We analysed similarity matrices from each of these three techniques, as well as a random control, by unsupervised clustering using three separate techniques: k-means clustering, hierarchical clustering, and an adaptive resonance theory neural network. For each of the three clustering techniques, a seven-level Parsons algorithm provided better clustering than the correlation and dynamic time warping algorithms, and was closer to the near-perfect visual categorisations of human judges. Thus, the Parsons code captures much of the individual identity information present in signature whistles, and may prove useful in studies requiring quantification of whistle similarity. 相似文献

Many ovipositing mosquitoes, as well as other species, can detect biotic factors that affect fitness. However, a female mosquito seeking a high quality oviposition site (e.g. one with low risk of predation and competition to her progeny) must often balance the competing risk of increasing probability of mortality to herself while she continues to search, against increased probability of finding a high quality site. Such oviposition site selection may affect adult population size. We examined a female mosquito’s expected strategy of oviposition site selection under conditions of varying predator prevalence and adult mortality risk, by combining a detailed structured population model with a Markov chain implementation of the adult behavioural process. We used parameter values from the specific mosquito-predator system, Culiseta longiareolata-Notonecta maculata, although the overall results can be generalised to many mosquito species. Our model finds the evolutionarily stable strategy of oviposition site selection for different parameter combinations. Our model predicts that oviposition strategy does not vary smoothly with varying environmental risk of adult mortality, but that certain oviposition strategies become unstable at some parameter values. Mosquitoes will distribute their reproductive effort between breeding sites of varying predation risk only when adult mortality is low or larval competition high. Our model predicts that females will continue searching for predator-free pools, rather than oviposit in the first site encountered, regardless of the risk of mortality to the adult. The ecological basis for a reproductive strategy with alternative behaviours is important for understanding the effect of biotic factors on the population dynamics of mosquitoes, and for the development of biological control strategies, such as the dissemination of predator-cue chemicals. 相似文献

A novel series of 3-substituted-8-aryl-[1,2,4]-triazolo[5,1-i]purin-5-amine analogs related to Sch 58261 was synthesized in order to identify potent adenosine A(2A) receptor antagonists with improved selectivity over the A(1) receptor, physiochemical properties, and pharmacokinetic profiles as compared to those of Sch 58261. As a result of structural modifications, numerous analogs with excellent in vitro binding affinities and selectivities were identified. This article draws attention to several common mistakes in thinking about biomedical enhancement, mistakes that are made even by some supporters of enhancement. We illustrate these mistakes by examining objections that John Harris has recently raised against the use of pharmacological interventions to directly modulate moral decision‐making. We then apply these lessons to other influential figures in the debate about enhancement. One upshot of our argument is that many considerations presented as powerful objections to enhancement are really strong considerations in favour of biomedical enhancement, just in a different direction. Another upshot is that it is unfortunate that much of the current debate focuses on interventions that will radically transform normal human capacities. Such interventions are unlikely to be available in the near future, and may not even be feasible. But our argument shows that the enhancement project can still have a radical impact on human life even if biomedical enhancement operated entirely within the normal human range. 相似文献
