Small marine herbivores that live on the plants they consume often selectively eat seaweeds that are chemically defended from fishes. Their feeding is unaffected or stimulated by the plant metabolites that deter fishes, and these small herbivores dramatically reduce their susceptibility to predation by associating with host plants that are noxious to fishes. Ecological similarities between these small marine herbivores and numerous terrestrial insects suggest that herbivorous insects also may have evolved a preference for toxic plants because this diminishes their losses to predators, parasites and pathogens. Although marine and terrestrial plants and herbivores evolved in strikingly different environments, the ease of experimentation in some marine systems makes them ideal for addressing certain questions of fundamental importance to both terrestrial and marine workers.  相似文献

Cycling of manure nutrients through turfgrass sod could affect groundwater quality. The fate of nutrients in transplanted fertilizer- or manure-grown sod of Tifway bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L. Pers. X C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davey) was compared with that in composted dairy manure (CDM) applied to a sprigged treatment. Leaching loss of NO3-N and dissolved P (DP) in filtrate (<0.45 μm) of leachate was compared among sodded and sprigged treatments during periods 0–50, 60–110, and 330–380 d after planting in lysimeters. In addition, recovery of N and P in turfgrass clippings and a sand medium was quantified. Maintenance applications of CDM or fertilizer P were top-dressed starting 60 d after planting. Leachate was collected and sampled over three simulated rain events during each of the three sampling periods. From 0 d to 50 d after planting, leaching loss of NO3-N from sprigged Tifway totaled 2.0 g m−2 and was 10 times greater than loss from CDM-grown or fertilizer-grown sod. In contrast, DP loss in leachate was ≤0.02 g m−2 and similar among treatments. Surface applications of CDM and fertilizer P and N increased concentration and mass of total Kjeldahl N (TKN) and soil-test P (STP) in surface or subsurface layers of the sand medium. Yet, NO3-N mass in leachate collected over three simulated rain events ranged from 0.0 to only 1.0% of applied N from 60–110 d and 330–380 d after planting. Leaching loss of NO3-N did not differ between the sodded and sprigged treatments after two topdressings of CDM. Similarly, the DP mass recovered in leachate was small (≤0.013 g m−1) and did not differ among treatments during the latter two sampling periods. The mass loss of DP in leachate was typically less than the DP mass applied through irrigation or simulated rain. Importing CDM in sod reduces NO3-N leaching loss compared to sprigged turfgrass amended with CDM, but NO3-N and DP leaching losses are similar during maintenance of CDM-grown and fertilizer-grown sod from 60–110 d to 330–380 d after transplanting. Much evidence implicates IL-8 as a major mediator of inflammation and joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis. The effects of IL-8 and its related ligands are mediated via two receptors, CXCR1 and CXCR2. In the present study, we demonstrate that a potent and selective nonpeptide antagonist of human CXCR2 potently inhibits (125)I-labeled human IL-8 binding to, and human IL-8-induced calcium mobilization mediated by, rabbit CXCR2 (IC(50) = 40.5 and 7.7 nM, respectively), but not rabbit CXCR1 (IC(50) = >1000 and 2200 nM, respectively). These data suggest that the rabbit is an appropriate species in which to examine the anti-inflammatory effects of a human CXCR2-selective antagonist. In two acute models of arthritis in the rabbit induced by knee joint injection of human IL-8 or LPS, and a chronic Ag (OVA)-induced arthritis model, administration of the antagonist at 25 mg/kg by mouth twice a day significantly reduced synovial fluid neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes. In addition, in the more robust LPS- and OVA-induced arthritis models, which were characterized by increased levels of proinflammatory mediators in the synovial fluid, TNF-alpha, IL-8, PGE(2), leukotriene B(4), and leukotriene C(4) levels were significantly reduced, as was erythrocyte sedimentation rate, possibly as a result of the observed decreases in serum TNF-alpha and IL-8 levels. In vitro, the antagonist potently inhibited human IL-8-induced chemotaxis of rabbit neutrophils (IC(50) = 0.75 nM), suggesting that inhibition of leukocyte migration into the knee joint is a likely mechanism by which the CXCR2 antagonist modulates disease.  相似文献

A mathematical model of the muscle groups applied to the human mandible is developed to study the forces developed on the condyles during maximum unilateral occlusion. The results show that the reaction forces are in approximately a 2:1 ratio with the balancing side condyle carrying the greater load. Furthermore, the direction in which these condylar reactions occur is presented.  相似文献

A simple liquid chromatographic method was developed for the simultaneous determination of flavonoids from Orthosiphon stamineus Benth, namely sinensitin, eupatorin and 3'-hydroxy-5,6,7,4'-tetramethoxyflavone, in plasma. Prior to analysis, the flavonoids and the internal standard (naproxen) were extracted from plasma samples using a 1:1 mixture of ethyl acetate and chloroform. The detection and quantification limits for the three flavonoids were similar being 3 and 5 ng/ml, respectively. The within-day and between-day accuracy values, expressed as percentage of true values, for the three flavonoids were between 95 and 107%, while the corresponding precision, expressed as coefficients of variation, for the three flavonoids were less than 14%. In addition, the mean recovery values of the extraction procedure for all the flavonoids were between 92 and 114%. The calibration curves were linear over a concentration range of 5-4000 ng/ml. The present method was applied to analyse plasma samples obtained from a pilot study using rats in which the mean absolute oral bioavailability values for sinensitin, eupatorin and 3'-hydroxy-5,6,7,4'-tetramethoxyflavone was 9.4, 1.0 and 1.5%, respectively.  相似文献

The inhibitor of apoptosis protein DIAP1 inhibits Dronc-dependent cell death by ubiquitinating Dronc. The pro-death proteins Reaper, Hid and Grim (RHG) promote apoptosis by antagonizing DIAP1 function. Here we report the structural basis of Dronc recognition by DIAP1 as well as a novel mechanism by which the RHG proteins remove DIAP1-mediated downregulation of Dronc. Biochemical and structural analyses revealed that the second BIR (BIR2) domain of DIAP1 recognizes a 12-residue sequence in Dronc. This recognition is essential for DIAP1 binding to Dronc, and for targeting Dronc for ubiquitination. Notably, the Dronc-binding surface on BIR2 coincides with that required for binding to the N termini of the RHG proteins, which competitively eliminate DIAP1-mediated ubiquitination of Dronc. These observations reveal the molecular mechanisms of how DIAP1 recognizes Dronc, and more importantly, how the RHG proteins remove DIAP1-mediated ubiquitination of Dronc.  相似文献

The primary aim of this review was to evaluate the state of knowledge of the geographical distribution of all infectious diseases of clinical significance to humans. A systematic review was conducted to enumerate cartographic progress, with respect to the data available for mapping and the methods currently applied. The results helped define the minimum information requirements for mapping infectious disease occurrence, and a quantitative framework for assessing the mapping opportunities for all infectious diseases. This revealed that of 355 infectious diseases identified, 174 (49%) have a strong rationale for mapping and of these only 7 (4%) had been comprehensively mapped. A variety of ambitions, such as the quantification of the global burden of infectious disease, international biosurveillance, assessing the likelihood of infectious disease outbreaks and exploring the propensity for infectious disease evolution and emergence, are limited by these omissions. An overview of the factors hindering progress in disease cartography is provided. It is argued that rapid improvement in the landscape of infectious diseases mapping can be made by embracing non-conventional data sources, automation of geo-positioning and mapping procedures enabled by machine learning and information technology, respectively, in addition to harnessing labour of the volunteer ‘cognitive surplus’ through crowdsourcing.  相似文献
