Rabbit brain has been used in several works for the analysis of neurodevelopment. However, there are not specific digital rabbit brain atlases that allow an automatic identification of brain regions, which is a crucial step for various neuroimage analyses, and, instead, manual delineation of areas of interest must be performed in order to evaluate a specific structure. For this reason, we propose an atlas of the rabbit brain based on magnetic resonance imaging, including both structural and diffusion weighted, that can be used for the automatic parcellation of the rabbit brain. Ten individual atlases, as well as an average template and probabilistic maps of the anatomical regions were built. In addition, an example of automatic segmentation based on this atlas is described.  相似文献

The floral biology of Souroubea guianensis Aubl. was studiedat Dois Irmãos forest, a remnant of Atlantic forest inRecife, Pernambuco state, northeastern Brazil. The flowers ofS. guianensis have attributes which are not easily related toa particular pollination syndrome. They also have some uncommoncharacteristics, among them the presentation of pollen immersedin an oily fluid. The occurrence of this kind of pollen presentationin species of Marcgraviaceae is described here for the firsttime. The term tapetal oil is proposed for this unusual fluid.The flowers are protandrous, self-incompatible, last for 6 to7 d, and fruit-set under natural conditions is low. Sugar concentrationsin the nectar vary from 27.6 to 58.8%. After 105 h of observationfor pollinators in 3 different years, no efficient pollinatorwas found. Fragmentation of natural habitats could be one ofthe causes for the local loss of the legitimate pollinator ofSouroubeaguianensis . We analyzed the most likely cause of 687 bovine tuberculosis (bTB) breakdowns detected in Spain between 2009 and 2011 (i.e., 22% of the total number of breakdowns detected during this period). Seven possible causes were considered: i) residual infection; ii) introduction of infected cattle from other herds; iii) sharing of pastures with infected herds; iv) contiguous spread from infected neighbor herds; v) presence of infected goats in the farm; vi) interaction with wildlife reservoirs and vii) contact with an infected human. For each possible cause a decision tree was developed and key questions were included in each of them. Answers to these key questions lead to different events within each decision tree. In order to assess the likelihood of occurrence of the different events a qualitative risk assessment approach was used. For this purpose, an expert opinion workshop was organized and ordinal values, ranging from 0 to 9 (i.e., null to very high likelihood of occurrence) were assigned. The analysis identified residual infection as the most frequent cause of bTB breakdowns (22.3%; 95%CI: 19.4–25.6), followed by interaction with wildlife reservoirs (13.1%; 95%CI: 10.8–15.8). The introduction of infected cattle, sharing of pastures and contiguous spread from infected neighbour herds were also identified as relevant causes. In 41.6% (95%CI: 38.0–45.4) of the breakdowns the origin of infection remained unknown.Veterinary officers conducting bTB breakdown investigations have to state their opinion about the possible cause of each breakdown. Comparison between the results of our analysis and the opinion from veterinary officers revealed a slight concordance. This slight agreement might reflect a lack of harmonized criteria to assess the most likely cause of bTB breakdowns as well as different perceptions about the importance of the possible causes. This is especially relevant in the case of the role of wildlife reservoirs.  相似文献

Frequency tuning, temporal response pattern and latency properties of inferior colliculus neurons were investigated in the big fruit-eating bat, Artibeus jamaicensis. Neurons having best frequencies between 48–72 kHz and between 24–32 kHz are overrepresented. The inferior colliculus neurons had either phasic (consisting in only one response cycle at all stimulus intensities) or long-lasting oscillatory responses (consisting of multiple response cycles). Seventeen percent of neurons displayed paradoxical latency shift, i.e. their response latency increased with increasing sound level. Three types of paradoxical latency shift were found: (1) stable, that does not depend on sound duration, (2) duration-dependent, that grows with increasing sound duration, and (3) progressive, whose magnitude increases with increasing sound level. The temporal properties of paradoxical latency shift neurons compare well with those of neurons having long-lasting oscillatory responses, i.e. median inter-spike intervals and paradoxical latency shift below 6 ms are overrepresented. In addition, oscillatory and paradoxical latency shift neurons behave similarly when tested with tones of different durations. Temporal properties of oscillation and PLS found in the IC of fruit-eating bats are similar to those found in the IC of insectivorous bats using downward frequency-modulated echolocation calls.  相似文献

Adaptive radiations are defined as rapid diversification with phenotypic innovation led by colonization to new environments. Notably, adaptive radiations can occur in parallel when habitats with similar selective pressures are accessible promoting convergent adaptions. Although convergent evolution appears to be a common process, it is unclear what are the main drivers leading the reappearance of morphologies or ecological roles. We explore this question in Myotis bats, the only Chiropteran genus with a worldwide distribution. Three foraging strategies—gleaning, trawling, and aerial netting—repeatedly evolved in several regions of the world, each linked to characteristic morphologies recognized as ecomorphs. Phylogenomic, morphometric, and comparative approaches were adopted to investigate convergence of such foraging strategies and skull morphology as well as factors that explain diversification rates. Genomic and morphometric data were analyzed from ~80% extant taxa. Results confirm that the ecomorphs evolved multiple times, with trawling evolving more often and foliage gleaning most recently. Skull morphology does not reflect common ancestry and evolves convergently with foraging strategy. Although diversification rates have been roughly constant across the genus, speciation rates are area‐dependent and higher in taxa with temperate distributions. Results suggest that in this species‐rich group of bats, first, stochastic processes have led divergence into multiple lineages. Then, natural selection in similar niches has promoted repeated adaptation of phenotypes and foraging strategies. Myotis bats are thus a remarkable case of ecomorphological convergence and an emerging model system for investigating the genomic basis of parallel adaptive radiation.  相似文献

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) forms the outer blood–retina barrier (BRB). Most retinal diseases involve BRB breakdown, whereupon thrombin contained in serum directly contacts the RPE. Thrombin is known to promote actin stress fiber formation, an important determinant in eye diseases involving the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) and migration of RPE cells, such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy. We analyzed thrombin effect on signaling pathways leading to myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation and actin stress fiber formation in primary cultures of rat RPE cells, in order to support a role for thrombin in RPE transdifferentiation. MLC phosphorylation was measured by Western blot; actin cytoskeleton was visualized using immunofluorescent phalloidin, and Rho GTPase activation was assessed by ELISA. We showed that thrombin/PAR‐1 induces the time‐ and dose‐dependent phosphorylation of MLC through the activation of Rho/ROCK and myosin light chain kinase (MLCK). ROCK increased phospho‐MLC by phosphorylating MLC and by inhibiting MLC phosphatase. Thrombin effect was abolished by the ROCK inhibitor Y‐27632, whereas MLCK inhibitor ML‐7 and PLC‐β inhibitor U73122 attenuated MLC phosphorylation by ≈50%, suggesting the activation of MLCK by PLC‐β‐mediated calcium increase. Additionally, thrombin‐induced MLC phosphorylation was blocked by the inhibitory PKCζ pseudosubstrate, wortmannin, and LY294002, indicating IP3/PKCζ involvement in the control of MLC phosphorylation. Moreover, we demonstrated that thrombin effect on MLC induces actin stress fiber formation, since this effect was prevented by inhibiting the pathways leading to MLC phosphorylation. We conclude that thrombin stimulation of MLC phosphorylation and actin stress fiber formation may be involved in thrombin‐induced RPE cell transformation subsequent to BRB dysfunction. J. Cell. Gap junction (GJ) mediates intercellular communication through linked hemichannels from each of two adjacent cells. Using human and mouse models, we show that connexin 43 (Cx43), the main GJ protein in the immune system, was recruited to the immunological synapse during T cell priming as both GJs and stand-alone hemichannels. Cx43 accumulation at the synapse was Ag specific and time dependent, and required an intact actin cytoskeleton. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching and Cx43-specific inhibitors were used to prove that intercellular communication between T cells and dendritic cells is bidirectional and specifically mediated by Cx43. Moreover, this intercellular cross talk contributed to T cell activation as silencing of Cx43 with an antisense or inhibition of GJ docking impaired intracellular Ca(2+) responses and cytokine release by T cells. These findings identify Cx43 as an important functional component of the immunological synapse and reveal a crucial role for GJs and hemichannels as coordinators of the dendritic cell-T cell signaling machinery that regulates T cell activation.  相似文献

Dioecy is a rare sexual system among angiosperms whose occurrence and frequency depend on the kind and geographical location of the ecosystem. We evaluate the frequency of dioecy in the Caatinga, a special semi-arid vegetation type in Brazil. We compare the floral traits and other ecological characteristics usually related to dioecy between the Caatinga and other tropical ecosystems. Dioecious species of the Caatinga were compiled based on 24 published floristic lists including most of the Caatinga domain. These lists were compared with publications comprising data on sexual systems in different kinds of vegetation in the world. Sexual system confirmation and the database of the reproductive traits of the dioecious species were made by consulting herbaria, literature, and field observations. We registered 22 dioecious species occurring in the Caatinga. The overall dioecy frequency was 2.36 %, considering all Caatinga species, and 6.91 % within woody species. Most dioecious species exhibited traits related to this sexual system (e.g., woody habit, greenish inconspicuous flowers, generalistic pollination syndrome, and zoochory). The distribution of dioecy across the Caatinga plant community exhibited a very low level of phylogenetic signal (D = ?0.145), indicating a phylogenetic structure under Brownian evolution (p = 0.671). The frequency of dioecy in the Caatinga (2.36 %) proved lower than reported for angiosperms in general (ca. 6 %) and for other tropical ecosystems. This low frequency can be related to particular ecological characteristics of the Caatinga, such as low percentage of trees >3–4 m tall (13–18.7 %), low rainfall (50 % of the Caatinga vegetation with annual rainfall lower than 750 mm), and strong seasonality (6–9 months of dry season). Dioecious species of the Caatinga exhibited typical reproductive traits for this sexual system, similar to what has been reported for dioecious species of other tropical ecosystems in the world.  相似文献
