Quantifying introgression between sexual species and polyploid lineages traditionally thought to be asexual is an important step in understanding what drives the longevity of putatively asexual groups. Here, we capitalize on three recent innovations—ultraconserved element (UCE) sequencing, bioinformatic techniques for identifying genome‐specific variation in polyploids, and model‐based methods for evaluating historical gene flow—to measure the extent and tempo of introgression over the evolutionary history of an allopolyploid lineage of all‐female salamanders and two ancestral sexual species. Our analyses support a scenario in which the genomes sampled in unisexual salamanders last shared a common ancestor with genomes in their parental species ~3.4 million years ago, followed by a period of divergence between homologous genomes. Recently, secondary introgression has occurred at different times with each sexual species during the last 500,000 years. Sustained introgression of sexual genomes into the unisexual lineage is the defining characteristic of their reproductive mode, but this study provides the first evidence that unisexual genomes have undergone long periods of divergence without introgression. Unlike other sperm‐dependent taxa in which introgression is rare, the alternating periods of divergence and introgression between unisexual salamanders and their sexual relatives could explain why these salamanders are among the oldest described unisexual animals.  相似文献

Many rare plants exist in a naturally fragmented distribution and are expected to exhibit reproductive adaptations to isolation. Thus, understanding the reproduction of these plants might be important in predicting the future of artificially fragmented species. Ameroglossum pernambucense is a threatened ornithophilous shrub with naturally fragmented populations on granite outcrops in north-eastern Brazil. The current research studied two populations of A. pernambucense and determined if three reproductive features (mating system, flowering phenology and nectar dynamics) facilitate the colonisation of new areas and the gene flow among the outcrops. To verify the species’ reproductive efficiency, pollinator efficiency and pollen limitation were tested. Ameroglossum pernambucense has a mixed mating system, and pollinators increased seed production. The pollinator efficiency test revealed that hummingbirds can supply the entire pollen demand. No pollen limitation was detected. Variation in sunset time was the main factor to explain the flowering pattern of A. pernambucense. Nectar was abundantly produced after successive removals. The reproductive traits observed in A. pernambucense were interpreted as highly adapted to its fragmented condition. Phenological photoperiodic regulation may increase the flowering synchrony and chances of gene flow among outcrops in environmentally distinct microsites. The mixed mating system favours both the colonisation of isolated outcrops and allogamy. High flower production and its high energetic value may have an important role in pollinator attraction and may increase long-distance outcrossing. Our data suggest that artificially fragmented plants with reproductive features similar to those observed here might be reproductively less susceptible to fragmentation.  相似文献

Multilocus phylogenetic analysis of small-subunit (SSU) rRNA and actin from Cryptosporidium molnari clustered this species with the C. molnari-like genotype of an isolate from the guppy, although the two fish isolates seem to be distinct species. The analysis of available piscine genotypes provides some support for cladistic congruence of the genus Piscicryptosporidium, but additional piscine genotypes are needed.Recent reviews accept more than 20 valid cryptosporidium species (7, 20), and characterization of additional isolates is expanding this list rapidly (http://www.vetsci.usyd.edu.au/staff/JanSlapeta/icrypto/index.htm). In addition, numerous morphotypes or genotypes have been proposed whose taxonomic affiliation is unsettled due to incomplete characterization according to minimum consensus standards (5, 7, 24). Five species have been proposed for fish isolates (15), but only Cryptosporidium molnari and Cryptosporidium scophthalmi (2, 4) stand as valid species (20), although not without discussion (7). Fish cryptosporidia present some unique features, which have even led to the genus Piscicryptosporidium being proposed (13). However, lack of genetic support keeps this genus and several fish morphotypes as incertae sedis (12, 15, 24). Detailed biological data on C. molnari and C. scophthalmi have been previously presented (3, 18, 19), but no molecular characterization has yet been conducted, thus hampering species identification of other fish isolates (7, 24) and evaluation of their relationships within the genus (15). Ribosomal and actin gene data on an isolate from guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata) have been obtained, and preliminary analyses of these sequences indicated a basal position in the cryptosporidial tree (17). Although it was regarded as C. molnari-like, biological characterization of this isolate was limited. The purpose of this work was to provide the necessary C. molnari comparative genetic data and to clarify the relationship of available fish isolates in a phylogenetic context.  相似文献

BACKGROUNDS AND AIMS: The reproductive biology of a community can provide answers to questions related to the maintenance of the intraspecific pollen flow and reproductive success of populations, sharing and competition for pollinators and also questions on conservation of natural habitats affected by fragmentation processes. This work presents, for the first time, data on the occurrence and frequency of plant sexual systems for Caatinga communities, and a review of the breeding system studies of Caatinga species. METHODS: The sexual systems of 147 species from 34 families and 91 genera occurring in three Caatinga areas in north-eastern Brazil were analysed and compared with worldwide studies focusing on reproductive biology of different tropical communities. KEY RESULTS: The frequency of hermaphrodite species was 83.0 % (122 species), seven of these (or 4.8 % of the total) being heterostylous. Monoecy occurred in 9.5 % (14) of the species, and andromonoecy in 4.8 % (seven). Only 2.7 % (four) of the species were dioecious. A high percentage of hermaphrodite species was expected and has been reported for other tropical ecosystems. With respect to the breeding system studies with species of the Caatinga, the authors' data for 21 species and an additional 18 species studied by others (n = 39) revealed a high percentage (61.5 %) of obligatory self-incompatibility. Agamospermy was not recorded among the Caatinga studied species. CONCLUSIONS: The plant sexual systems in the Caatinga, despite the semi-arid climate, are similar to other tropical dry and wet forest communities, including those with high rainfall levels, except for the much lower percentage of dioecious species. The high frequency of self-incompatible species is similar to that reported for Savanna areas in Brazil, and also for dry (deciduous and semideciduous) and humid tropical forest communities.  相似文献

When growing in search for light, plants can experience continuous or occasional shading by other plants. Plant proximity causes a decrease in the ratio of R to far-red light (low R:FR) due to the preferential absorbance of R light and reflection of FR light by photosynthetic tissues of neighboring plants. This signal is often perceived before actual shading causes a reduction in photosynthetically active radiation (low PAR). Here, we investigated how several Brassicaceae species from different habitats respond to low R:FR and low PAR in terms of elongation, photosynthesis, and photoacclimation. Shade-tolerant plants such as hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta) displayed a good adaptation to low PAR but a poor or null response to low R:FR exposure. In contrast, shade-avoider species, such as Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), showed a weak photosynthetic performance under low PAR but they strongly elongated when exposed to low R:FR. These responses could be genetically uncoupled. Most interestingly, exposure to low R:FR of shade-avoider (but not shade-tolerant) plants improved their photoacclimation to low PAR by triggering changes in photosynthesis-related gene expression, pigment accumulation, and chloroplast ultrastructure. These results indicate that low R:FR signaling unleashes molecular, metabolic, and developmental responses that allow shade-avoider plants (including most crops) to adjust their photosynthetic capacity in anticipation of eventual shading by nearby plants.
