A series of laboratory experiments examined the foraging behavior of a thelytokous strain of Lysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall), a strongly proovigenic parasitoid of Aphis fabae Scopoli, in Iran. Females use chemical camoflage to forage undisturbed in ant-tended aphid colonies and solicit honeydew from aphids in the manner of ants. Rates of oviposition are very low (∼ 1.2 eggs / h) despite many aphid encounters and persistent ovipositor probing which appears to prime aphids for subsequent honeydew solicitation. Starved females spent 3.6 times longer in host patches (leaf disks with 15 2nd–3rd instar A. fabae) than did females sated on honey, and 40% of this time was spent soliciting honeydew. Five d-old females spent longer in patches than did one d-old females, and parasitized three times as many aphids. A 24 h pre-trial foraging experience did not reduce mean egg load significantly compared to a one h experience, but was sufficient to reduce patch residence time and number of aphids parasitized. Wasps reared under short day conditions (L:D = 10:14) were more pessimistic foragers (remained longer in patches and parasitized more aphids) than females raised under long days (L:D = 16:8). Wasps that encountered aphids previously parasitized by conspecifics began to superparasitize and remained longer in patches than females that encountered only unparasitized aphids. Encounters with other females had no effect on foraging behavior, possibly because cuticular camoflage interferes with conspecific recognition. The exceptionally low oviposition rate of this wasp may reflect a life history in which individual fitness has evolved to be strongly dependent on continued ant attendance throughout the period of progeny development.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant effects of betaine against oxidative stress and pathological changes mediated by cadmium in the testes of rats. The adult male Wistar rats were allocated into three experimental groups as follows: the cadmium group received cadmium chloride at the dosage of 2 mg/kg intraperitoneally thereafter, the rats treated by physiological saline for 10 consecutive days. The betaine plus cadmium group received betaine at the dosage of 1.5 % w/w of the total diet orally for 10 consecutive days and cadmium chloride injected at the 2nd day of the betaine treatment. The control rats were injected physiological saline. Both testes of rats were removed for antioxidant assay and pathological changes evaluation on days 5 and 10 after cadmium toxicity. TBARS concentration (as a lipid peroxidation marker) was significantly higher in the cadmium group by day 10 compared to control and betaine plus cadmium groups, and it was significantly higher in cadmium group by day 5 in comparison with the controls. Catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase activities decreased significantly by day 10 in cadmium group when compared to the controls. In contrast, CAT and superoxide dismutase activities increased significantly by day 10 in betaine plus cadmium group when compared to the cadmium group. In addition, the antioxidant effects of betaine could prevent testicular pathological changes in betaine plus cadmium group. The present data allow us to exploit the advantages of this nutrient agent in future studies.  相似文献

Genomic data analysis across multiple cloud platforms is an ongoing challenge, especially when large amounts of data are involved. Here, we present Swarm, a framework for federated computation that promotes minimal data motion and facilitates crosstalk between genomic datasets stored on various cloud platforms. We demonstrate its utility via common inquiries of genomic variants across BigQuery in the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Athena in the Amazon Web Services (AWS), Apache Presto and MySQL. Compared to single-cloud platforms, the Swarm framework significantly reduced computational costs, run-time delays and risks of security breach and privacy violation.  相似文献

AIM: To improve osteogenic differentiation and attachment of cells.METHODS: An electronic search was conducted inPub Med from January 2004 to December 2013. Studies which performed smart modifications on conventional bone scaffold materials were included. Scaffolds with controlled release or encapsulation of bioactive molecules were not included. Experiments which did not investigate response of cells toward the scaffold(cell attachment, proliferation or osteoblastic differentiation) were excluded. RESULTS: Among 1458 studies, 38 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The main scaffold varied extensively among the included studies. Smart modifications included addition of growth factors(group Ⅰ-11 studies), extracellular matrix-like molecules(group Ⅱ-13 studies) and nanoparticles(nano-HA)(group Ⅲ-17 studies). In all groups, surface coating was the most commonly applied approach for smart modification of scaffolds. In group I, bone morphogenetic proteins were mainly used as growth factor stabilized on polycaprolactone(PCL). In group Ⅱ, collagen 1 in combination with PCL, hydroxyapatite(HA) and tricalcium phosphate were the most frequent scaffolds used. In the third group, nano-HA with PCL and chitosan were used the most. As variable methods were used, a thorough and comprehensible compare between the results and approaches was unattainable.CONCLUSION: Regarding the variability in methodology of these in vitro studies it was demonstrated that smart modification of scaffolds can improve tissue properties.  相似文献

Many living organisms transform inorganic atoms into highly ordered crystalline materials. An elegant example of such biomineralization processes is the production of nano-scale magnetic crystals in magnetotactic bacteria. Previous studies implicated the involvement of two putative serine proteases, MamE and MamO, during the early stages of magnetite formation in Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1. Here, using genetic analysis and X-ray crystallography, we show that MamO has a degenerate active site, rendering it incapable of protease activity. Instead, MamO promotes magnetosome formation through two genetically distinct, noncatalytic activities: activation of MamE-dependent proteolysis of biomineralization factors and direct binding to transition metal ions. By solving the structure of the protease domain bound to a metal ion, we identify a surface-exposed di-histidine motif in MamO that contributes to metal binding and show that it is required to initiate biomineralization in vivo. Finally, we find that pseudoproteases are widespread in magnetotactic bacteria and that they have evolved independently in three separate taxa. Our results highlight the versatility of protein scaffolds in accommodating new biochemical activities and provide unprecedented insight into the earliest stages of biomineralization.  相似文献

In heterogeneous distributed computing systems like cloud computing, the problem of mapping tasks to resources is a major issue which can have much impact on system performance. For some reasons such as heterogeneous and dynamic features and the dependencies among requests, task scheduling is known to be a NP-complete problem. In this paper, we proposed a hybrid heuristic method (HSGA) to find a suitable scheduling for workflow graph, based on genetic algorithm in order to obtain the response quickly moreover optimizes makespan, load balancing on resources and speedup ratio. At first, the HSGA algorithm makes tasks prioritization in complex graph considering their impact on others, based on graph topology. This technique is efficient to reduction of completion time of application. Then, it merges Best-Fit and Round Robin methods to make an optimal initial population to obtain a good solution quickly, and apply some suitable operations such as mutation to control and lead the algorithm to optimized solution. This algorithm evaluates the solutions by considering efficient parameters in cloud environment. Finally, the proposed algorithm presents the better results with increasing number of tasks in application graph in contrast with other studied algorithms.  相似文献
