Various doped materials have been investigated to improve the structural stability of layered transition metal oxides for lithium‐ion batteries. Most doped materials are obtained through solid state methods, in which the doping of cations is not strictly site selective. This paper demonstrates, for the first time, an in situ electrochemical site‐selective doping process that selectively substitutes Li+ at Li sites in Mn‐rich layered oxides with Mg2+. Mg2+ cations are electrochemically intercalated into Li sites in delithiated Mn‐rich layered oxides, resulting in the formation of [Li1?xMgy][Mn1?zMz]O2 (M = Co and Ni). This Mg2+ intercalation is irreversible, leading to the favorable doping of Mg2+ at the Li sites. More interestingly, the amount of intercalated Mg2+ dopants increases with the increasing amount of Mn in Li1?x[Mn1?zMz]O2, which is attributed to the fact that the Mn‐to‐O electron transfer enhances the attractive interaction between Mg2+ dopants and electronegative Oδ? atoms. Moreover, Mg2+ at the Li sites in layered oxides suppresses cation mixing during cycling, resulting in markedly improved capacity retention over 200 cycles. The first‐principle calculations further clarify the role of Mg2+ in reduced cation mixing during cycling. The new concept of in situ electrochemical doping provides a new avenue for the development of various selectively doped materials.  相似文献

The sequence of events leading to clathrin-coated pit (CCP) nucleation on the cell surface and to the incorporation of receptors into these endocytic structures is still imperfectly understood. In particular, the question remains as to whether receptor tails initiate the assembly of the coat proteins or whether receptors migrate into preformed CCP. This question was approached through a dissection of the mechanisms implemented by Nef, an early protein of human and simian immunodeficiency virus (HIV and SIV, respectively), to accelerate the endocytosis of cluster of differentiation antigen type 4 (CD4), the major receptor for these viruses. Results collected showed that: (a) Nef promotes CD4 internalization via an increased association of CD4 with CCP; (b) the Nef-mediated increase of CD4 association with CCP is related to a doubling of the plasma membrane area occupied by clathrin-coated structures; (c) this increased CCP number at the plasma membrane has functional consequences preferentially on CD4 uptake and does not significantly affect transferrin receptor internalization or fluid-phase endocytosis; (d) the presence of a CD4 cytoplasmic tail including a critical dileucine motif is required to induce CCP formation via Nef; and (e) when directly anchored to the cytoplasmic side of the plasma membrane, Nef itself can promote CCP formation. Taken together, these observations lead us to propose that CD4 can promote CCP generation via the connector molecule Nef. In this model, Nef interacts on one side with CD4 through a dileucine-based motif present on CD4 cytoplasmic tail and on the other side with components of clathrin-coated surface domain (i.e., adaptins). These Nef-generated complexes would then initiate the nucleation of CCP.  相似文献

Impaired hearing is a serious problem. The number of persons with a significant hearing loss has been estimated to be approximately 10 per cent of the population.Hearing loss owing to exposure to noise is becoming an increasingly important disease. Although it has been recognized for more than a century, little if anything was done to prevent it until a few years ago.The initiation of hearing conservation for employees has been undertaken by many of the large companies, particularly in California.Hearing conservation includes preemployment and follow-up hearing tests, control of noise at the source and personal protection (ear plugs, ear muffs).Noise-induced hearing loss is directly related to noise-exposure. Noise must be measured in terms of volume, wave length and length of exposure. Exposure must be analyzed for daily distribution and total time.Although the noise-exposure problem is a serious one, cooperation of employee, employer and the legal and medical professions to initiate preventive programs can reduce it to a minimum.  相似文献

Vernal pools are small, seasonal wetlands that are a common landscape feature contributing to biodiversity in northeastern North American forests. Basic information about their biogeochemical functions, such as carbon cycling, is limited. Concentrations of dissolved methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and other water chemistry parameters were monitored weekly at the bottom and surface of four vernal pools in central and eastern Maine, USA, from April to August 2016. The vernal pools were supersaturated with respect to CH4 and CO2 at all sampling dates and locations. Concentrations of dissolved CH4 and CO2 ranged from 0.4 to 210 μmol L?1 and 72–2300 μmol L?1, respectively. Diffusive fluxes of CH4 and CO2 into the atmosphere ranged from 0.2 to 73 mmol m?2 d?1, and 30–590 mmol m?2 d?1, respectively. During the study period, the four vernal pools emitted 0.1–5.8 kg C m?2 and 9.6–120 kg C m?2 as CH4 and CO2, respectively. The production fluxes (production rates normalized to surface area) of CH4 and CO2 ranged from ? 0.02 to 0.66 and 0.40–4.6 g C m?2 d?1, respectively, and increased significantly over the season. Methane concentrations were best predicted by alkalinity, ortho-phosphate and depth, while CO2 concentrations were best predicted with only alkalinity. Alkalinity as a predictor variable highlights the importance of anaerobic respiration in production of both gases. Our study pools had large concentrations and effluxes of CH4 and CO2 compared to permanently inundated wetlands, indicating vernal pools are metabolically active sites and may be important contributors to the global carbon budget.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Policy makers have speculated that one of the economic benefits of malaria elimination includes increases in foreign direct investment, particularly tourism. METHODS: The study examines the empirical relationship between the demand for travel and malaria cases in two countries with large tourism industries around the time in which they carried out malaria-elimination campaigns. In Mauritius, this analysis examines historical yearly tourist arrivals and malaria cases from 1978-1999, accounting for the background secular trend of increasing international travel. In Dominican Republic, a country embarking upon malaria elimination, it employs a time-series analyses of the monthly, international, tourist arrivals from 1998-2010 to determine whether the timing of significant deviations in tourist arrivals coincides with malaria outbreaks. RESULTS: While naive relationships exist in both cases, the results show that the relationships between tourist arrival and malaria cases are relatively weak and statistically insignificant once secular confounders are accounted for. CONCLUSIONS: This suggests that any economic benefits from tourism that may be derived from actively pursuing elimination in countries that may have high tourism potential are likely to be small when measured at a national level. Rather, tourism benefits are likely to be experienced with greater impact in more concentrated tourist areas within countries, and future studies should seek to assess this relationship at a regional or local level.  相似文献

Gut microbes play a crucial role in decomposing lignocellulose to fuel termite societies, with protists in the lower termites and prokaryotes in the higher termites providing these services. However, a single basal subfamily of the higher termites, the Macrotermitinae, also domesticated a plant biomass‐degrading fungus (Termitomyces), and how this symbiont acquisition has affected the fungus‐growing termite gut microbiota has remained unclear. The objective of our study was to compare the intestinal bacterial communities of five genera (nine species) of fungus‐growing termites to establish whether or not an ancestral core microbiota has been maintained and characterizes extant lineages. Using 454‐pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, we show that gut communities have representatives of 26 bacterial phyla and are dominated by Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Spirochaetes, Proteobacteria and Synergistetes. A set of 42 genus‐level taxa was present in all termite species and accounted for 56–68% of the species‐specific reads. Gut communities of termites from the same genus were more similar than distantly related species, suggesting that phylogenetic ancestry matters, possibly in connection with specific termite genus‐level ecological niches. Finally, we show that gut communities of fungus‐growing termites are similar to cockroaches, both at the bacterial phylum level and in a comparison of the core Macrotermitinae taxa abundances with representative cockroach, lower termite and higher nonfungus‐growing termites. These results suggest that the obligate association with Termitomyces has forced the bacterial gut communities of the fungus‐growing termites towards a relatively uniform composition with higher similarity to their omnivorous relatives than to more closely related termites.  相似文献
