Chemotaxonomy of Cannabis I. Crossbreeding between Cannabis sativa and C. ruderalis,with analysis of cannabinoid content

A controlled cross betweenCannabis sativa L. andC. ruderalis Janisch. gave progeny intermediate in both cannabinoid content and morphology. The progeny fell into two distinct populations, those whose tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content was closer to theC. sativa parent (greater than 60% of total cannabinoids) and those whose THC content was closer to theC. ruderalis parent (less than 40% of total cannabinoids). The lower THC group was twice as frequent as the other group. Earliness of flowering, number of flowers, and height characteristics were intermediate between the parents.     

Neolignans from an Aniba species

A benzene extract of the trunk of an Aniba species (Lauraceae) contained benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, sitosterol and the neolignans (2S,3S,3aR)-3a-allyl-5-methoxy-3-methyl-2-piperonyl-2,3,3a,6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofuran (burchellin); (2S,3S,3aR)-3a-allyl-5-methoxy-3-methyl-2-veratryl-2,3,3a,6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofuran; (2S,3S,3aR)-3a-allyl-5,7-dimethoxy-3-methyl-2-veratryl-2,3,3a,6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofuran; (2S,3S,5S)-5-allyl-5-methoxy-3-methyl-2-veratryl-2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-6-oxo-benzofuran; (2R,3R)-7-methoxy-3-methyl-5-propenyl-2-veratryl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran; rel-(1R,5R,6R,7R,8S)-1-allyl-8-hydroxy-3-methoxy-7-methyl-4-oxo-6-piperonylbicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene (guianin); rel-(1S,5S,6S,7R,8R)-1-allyl-8-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxy-7-methyl-4-oxo-6-piperonylbicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene; rel-(1S,5S,6S,7R,8R)-8-acetoxy-1-allyl-3-hydroxy-5-methoxy-7-methyl-4-oxo-6-piperonyl-bicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene; rel-1S,5S,6S,7R,8R)-8-acetoxy-3,5-dimethoxy-7-methyl-4-oxo-6-piperonylbicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene; rel-(1R,5S,6R,7R)-1-allyl-3-methoxy-7-methyl-4,8-dioxo-6-piperonylbicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene.     

Hormonal effects on diosgenin biosynthesis and growth in Dioscorea deltoidea tissue cultures

Analysis of Dioscorea deltoidea tissue cultures grown in the presence of 2,4-D, indole-3-butyric acid, isopentenyladenine, benzyladenine and GA singly and in combination showed that the medium with 2,4-D most consistently favored diosgenin production. GA and high benzyladenine concentrations were toxic.     

The immune response of allophenic mice to the synthetic polymer GLΦ

The immune response of allophenic mice of type C57BL/6(A × SJL) F₁ to GL administered in complete Freund's adjuvant was tested. Control mice of the three strains C57BL/6, A, and SJL are all nonresponders to this antigen. However, the F₁ generations of C57BL/6 × A, C57BL/6 × SJL, and A × SJL were all responders to the antigen, so that the complementarity of at least two genes is confirmed. The allophenic mice showed no further complementation beyond the F₁ generation, a result which may argue against the possibility that more than two genes control the response to GL in these mouse strains. Characterization of the allophenic mice over several months showed that they exhibit chimeric drift, both in their coat color and in peripheral white blood cell population. There is no apparent correlation of coat color to the lymphocyte composition of the mice at any one time. The mice are true chimeras, since killing of the two populations of white blood cells with two different anti-H-2 sera produced a 100 percent killing. Status of the microbial census.

Over the past 20 years, more than 78,000 16S rRNA gene sequences have been deposited in GenBank and the Ribosomal Database Project, making the 16S rRNA gene the most widely studied gene for reconstructing bacterial phylogeny. While there is a general appreciation that these sequences are largely unique and derived from diverse species of bacteria, there has not been a quantitative attempt to describe the extent of sequencing efforts to date. We constructed rarefaction curves for each bacterial phylum and for the entire bacterial domain to assess the current state of sampling and the relative taxonomic richness of each phylum. This analysis quantifies the general sense among microbiologists that we are a long way from a complete census of the bacteria on Earth. Moreover, the analysis indicates that current sampling strategies might not be the most effective ones to describe novel diversity because there remain numerous phyla that are globally distributed yet poorly sampled. Based on the current level of sampling, it is not possible to estimate the total number of bacterial species on Earth, but the minimum species richness is 35,498. Considering previous global species richness estimates of 10(7) to 10(9), we are certain that this estimate will increase with additional sequencing efforts. The data support previous calls for extensive surveys of multiple chemically disparate environments and of specific phylogenetic groups to advance the census most rapidly.     

A New Method for Preparation of Undecalcified Bone Sections

A new method for preparation of sections of undecalcified bone is described. Samples of ovine bone were embedded in methylmethacrylate and thick-sectioned with a cutoff machine or commercial band saw. Composite slides were prepared by gluing white acrylic to glass using cyanoacrylate glue. Bone sections were glued to the composite slide and then surface polished by grinding or ultramilling. The polished surface of the section was then etched and stained. The techniques described in this paper reduce the time spent grinding or milling sections and improve resolution of surface-stained features of undecalcified bone sections.     

Factors influencing the stability of acid-precipitated polyvalent Bordetella pertussis bulk suspensions.

According to the statistical analysis of the potency values of acid precipitated polyvalent bulk suspensions of Bordetella pertussis, the potency of suspensions decreased below 8 IU/30 IOU during storage for 5 to 9.8 years. The average annual decrease over a 13-year period was 2.03 IU/30 IOU. The periodicity in the decrease of potency values was assumed to be connected with changes in the quality of the casein hydrolysate ingredient of the medium. Periodic functions employed to approach potency values with limits of 1 SD falling within the range of 64--156% indicated that the potency decreased below 8 IU/30 IOU after 9 years.
