Three temple ponds with permanent blooms of blue green algae were highly productive. They all showed high alkalinity, hardness, electrical conductivity and pH. Organic carbon and nitrogen were highest in Sarvatheertham pond—60 to 79.6 mg./l. C and 4.10 to 7.60 mg./l. N. In Tamaraikulam it was 16.5 to 20.3 mg. C/l. and 1.03 to 1.32 mg. N/l. In Sarvatheertham, the gross production ranged from 2.85 to 20.72 g. O2/m.2/d. Self shading by blanket algae of blue greens reduced productivity in Sarvatheertham, where a persistent thermal and biochemical stratification was noted. Very high organic carbon and nitrogen contents were noted in Sarvatheertham pond. The dry weight of plankton in this pond ranged from 430 to 900 mg./l. Productivity computed from diurnal changes in alkalinity and dissolved oxygen also revealed a high rate in Ayyankulam, Tamaraikulam and Sarvatheertham in descending order. Very wide fluctuations in pH, both diurnally and depth-wise, were recorded in Sarvatheertham and to a lesser extent in the other two ponds. Photosynthetic efficiency was 4.03% in Ayyankulam, 2.09% in Tamaraikulam and 1.56% in Sarvatheertham. By the diurnal oxygen curve method, a gross primary production of 97.5 g. O2/m.2/d was recorded in Ayyankulam.  相似文献

Exposure to whole-body X-irradiation in rats causes a marked increase in total lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and decrease in H-LDH/M-LDH ratio in serum and tissues, the maximum effect being observed on the 8th post-irradiation day. While there is an elevation of M-LDH isoenzyme, H-LDH remains relatively constant. Studies on incorporation of DL-leucine-l-14C into heart LDH isoenzymes also revealed increased biosynthesis of M-LDH isoenzyme. This indicates that an adaptive mechanism is operative in the X-irradiated rats, whereby, in order to augment anaerobic glycolysis, synthesis of M-LDH is stimulated. Administration of the radioprotector cystamine does not alter the effects of X-irradiation on serum LDH activity.  相似文献

Meiosis was studied in several clones of Erianthus elephantinus, E. ravennae and E. munja. B chromosomes were observed in the pollen mother cells of two clones of E. ravennae and two clones of E. munja. They were absent in root tip cells. The transmission of B chromosomes was studied in S1 and S2 progenies. A numerical decrease of B chromosomes was noticed in selfed progeny.  相似文献

Compounds of natural origin are increasingly used as adjuncts to oral hygiene. We have adopted four distinct approaches to assess the antibacterial activity of dentifrices containing natural active ingredients against oral bacteria in several test systems. Corsodyl Daily (CD), Kingfisher Mint (KM), and Parodontax fluoride (PF) were compared to a dentifrice containing fluoride (Colgate Cavity Protection [CCP]) and one containing triclosan (Colgate Total [CT]). The growth inhibitory and bactericidal potency of the formulations were determined for 10 isolated oral bacteria. Effects of single exposures of simulated supragingival plaques were then determined by epifluorescence and confocal microscopy, while the effects of repeated exposures were quantified by viable counting. Additionally, dense plaques, maintained in continuous culture, were repeatedly dosed, and the outcome was assessed by viable counting and eubacterial DNA profiling. The test dentifrices exhibited variable specificity and potency against oral bacteria in axenic culture. Of the herbal formulations, KM caused the largest viability reductions in simulated supragingival plaques, with CT causing the greatest reductions overall. Following single exposures, CD caused moderate reductions, while PF had no effect. After multiple dosing, all formulations significantly reduced numbers of total, facultative, and Gram-negative anaerobes, but only KM and CT caused greater reductions than the fluoride control. KM also reduced counts of streptococci (rank order of effectiveness: CT > KM > CCP > PF > CD). Marked changes in eubacterial DNA profiles were not detected for any herbal formulation in dense plaques, although KM markedly reduced viable counts of streptococci, in agreement with supragingival data. While both nonherbal comparators displayed antibacterial activity, the triclosan-containing formulation caused greater viability reductions than the herbal and nonherbal formulations.  相似文献

Development of a broad-spectrum fluorescent heavy metal bacterial biosensor   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Bacterial biosensors can measure pollution in terms of their actual toxicity to living organisms. A recombinant bacterial biosensor has been constructed that is known to respond to toxic levels of Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+. The zinc regulatory gene zntR and zntA promoter from znt operon of E. coli have been used to trigger the expression of GFP reporter protein at toxic levels of these ions. The sensor was induced with 3–800?ppm of Zn2+, 0.005–4?ppm of Cd2+ and 0.001–0.12?ppm of Hg2+ ions. Induction studies were also performed in liquid media to quantify GFP fluorescence using fluorimeter. To determine the optimum culture conditions three different incubation periods (16, 20 and 24?h) were followed. Results showed an increased and consistent fluorescence in cells incubated for 16?h. Maximum induction for Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ was observed at 20, 0.005 and 0.002?ppm, respectively. The pPROBE-zntR-zntA biosensor reported here can be employed as a primary screening technique for aquatic heavy metal pollution.  相似文献

Bacillus licheniformis solubilized a range of inorganic phosphates and five different Indian rock phosphates (low grade) to varying extent in broth culture and in soil.
