Hypophysectomy completely abolishes and thyroidectomy results in a 90% reduction in the hepatic content of alpha 2u-globulin and its mRNA in the male rat. Thyroid hormone is also known to be required for the synthesis and secretion of pituitary growth hormone. In the hypothyroid rat either thyroxine or growth hormone was found to increase the activity and number of sequences of the mRNA for alpha 2u-globulin (measured by translational assay and hybridizational analysis with a cloned cDNA probe) to the euthyroid level. Treatment of hypophysectomized rats with a hormone combination containing growth hormone but not thyroxine increased the hepatic level of the mRNA for alpha 2u-globulin to that of normal animals. From these results we conclude that thyroxine indirectly influences the hepatic concentration of the mRNA for alpha 2u-globulin through its effect on pituitary growth hormone. Although administration of growth hormone to hypothyroid animals raised the hepatic concentration of alpha 2u-globulin mRNA to the euthyroid level, synthesis of alpha 2u-globulin remained low (50% of the normal). Complete recovery of alpha 2u-globulin synthesis required thyroxine. Therefore, in addition to an indirect effect on the hepatic level of alpha 2u-globulin mRNA, thyroxine also directly influences the synthesis of this protein. This direct effect of thyroxine on alpha 2u-globulin synthesis seems to be exerted at a step distal to the formation of mature mRNA.  相似文献

A hydrocarbon utilizing strain of Arthrobacter globiformis Lb isolated from local soil has been found to yield lysine 3.4 g l?1, keeping the medium optimal for pH, C- and N-sources. A preliminary survey of the few units of the small-scale glass bangle industry in Firozabad, Agra District, Uttar Pradesh, indicated that the workers were exposed to severe degrees of heat stress during various operations in the manufacturing processes. A more detailed study in eight glass bangle units was therefore undertaken to make quantitative estimates of heat stress on exposed workers in the summer season. The thermal data collected confirmed that the heat stress on the workers was severe but measurement of certain physiological indicators revealed relatively low levels of strain amongst the exposed workers. The findings could be attributable to high degrees of acclimatization, but further observations in the field supplemented by studies on simulated exposures of volunteers in a climatic chamber seem to be warranted.  相似文献

Surgical reduction of luteal tissue to about 20% of its total mass on day 5 pc was found to maintain gestation till term. A high degree of fetal loss was, however, evident. An identical surgical manipulation at the end of maximal luteal maturity, that is, on day 16 pc, resulted in normal maintenance of gestation. Fetal growth and their survival rate were found to be comparable to controls. An exclusive surgical extirpation of corpora lutea, on the other hand, either on day 16, 17, 18 or 19 was found to cause 100% fetal loss by day 23. However, progesterone replacement therapy concurrently with surgical luteal ablation till day 20, or surgical extirpation of the entire luteal mass when shifted on day 20, led the pregnancy to term. Present experimental findings, therefore, suggest that only about 20% of the functionally matured luteal mass until day 20 is essentially enough to maintain an ideal pregnancy status till term.  相似文献
