Salmonella thompson, a common pathogen of poultry, has received scant attention as a cause of human gastroenteritis. At least 45 persons were infected with S thompson in Sacramento, California, after eating at a chicken restaurant and 38 became symptomatic. Ten required admission to hospital, and all were treated with antibiotics and improved. In 19 cases cultures of stool specimens for S thompson over a 60-day period showed slower but statistically insignificant differences in salmonellal elimination in 7 patients who received antibiotics when compared with 12 who were untreated. We report this outbreak to increase awareness of the virulence and prevalence of gastroenteritis due to S thompson.  相似文献

Summary Fermentation tests in clearly defined laboratory conditions were carried out with eight functionally selected strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Analysis of the data showed that there were no significant differences in malic acid production between the strains when the acid was initially present. When it was initially absent, however, significant differences were observed two strains (Nos. 1141 and 1083) showing marked productive superiority. With malic acid as the sole C source, two strains (Nos. 1109 and 1141) showed less acid consumption.  相似文献

Compared withEscherichia coli, Halobacterium mediterranei was highly resistant to the lethal effect of N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (nitrosoguanidine), but it was sensitive to the mutagenic action of this chemical agent. Nitrosoguanidine at 500 g ml–1 gave a cell survival level between 1% and 10%, and this allowed us to obtain more Josamycin-resistant mutants compared with lower concentrations, which gave higher survival rates but fewer mutants. The efficiency of the mutagenicity obtained with the nitrosoguanidine treatment was examined under a variety of conditions. The optimal conditions for obtaining Josamycinresistant mutants were achieved by exposing, in darkness and without shaking, a suspension of about 108 log-phase cells to 500 g nitrosoguanidine in 1 ml of 50 mM modified saline Tris-maleate buffer at pH 7.5, or in 1 ml of 5 mM modified saline Tris-citrate-maleate for 30 min at 37°C.  相似文献

The energy-transducing ATPase and a low-molecular-weight fraction ofMicrococcus lysodeikticus membranes incorporated14C label fromd-[U-14C]glucose fed to the bacteria in synthetic medium. The specific radioactivity of the sugar portion of the ATPase and low-molecular-weight fraction was, respectively, 2.65 and 2.88 times that of their amino acids. Glucose and mannose in approximately equimolar amounts were identified as the main sugars of the glycoprotein ATPase, thus confirming previous structural studies. Glucose, galactose, and mannose (1:1:2) were identified as the main sugars of the low-molecular-weight glycopeptides. These results confirm and extend the notion that glycoprotein are constituents of prokaryotic membranes.  相似文献

Supernumerary chromosomes of two types have been observed in the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans subsp. plorans. One of these (the B-type) is similar in size to an S autosome; the other is smaller (B-type). Both are telocentric and mitotically stable. The frequencies of individuals with the B-type supernumeraries in five natural populations were 56, 56, 70, 71 and 30 per cent respectively. The equivalent levels of the B-type supernumerary were 0, 0, 13, 3 and 0 per cent respectively. Because of the relative infrequency of the B-type only the B-type has been studied in detail. In males with 1B, anaphase I segregation of X and B was random in four populations but non-random in that from Otivar. Here the B was distinctive in having a secondary constriction near the centromere. A study of chiasma frequency among A-chromosomes revealed that the B-type supernumerary increases significantly both the mean chiasma frequency and the between-cell variance. A comparison of body morphometrics failed to reveal any effect of these B-chromosomes on the exophenotype.  相似文献

The role of cyclic AMP in the regulation of aldosterone production by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), angiotensin II (A II), potassium, and serotonin was examined in collagenase-dispersed adrenal glomerulosa cells. The ability of 8-bromo cyclic AMP and choleragen to stimulate maximum aldosterone production indicated that cyclic AMP could act as second messenger for certain of the aldosterone-stimulating factors. The actions of ACTH and choleragen on aldosterone and cyclic AMP production were correlated in dog and rat cells, and a similar relation was seen during stimulation of rat cells by serotonin. In contrast, A II and potassium did not cause changes in cyclic AMP formation while stimulating aldosterone production. Intracellular and receptor-bound cyclic AMP were increased 3-fold by 10(-7) M ACTH but not by A II. Addition of a phosphodiesterase inhibitor increased the magnitude of the cyclic AMP response to ACTH but did not change the lack of stimulation by A II or potassium. In dog cells, the effects of A II and potassium on aldosterone production were partially additive to those of ACTH, choleragen, and 8-bromo cyclic AMP. In contrast, no additivity was observed between A II and potassium, or between combinations of the cyclic AMP-dependent stimuli. These results indicate that the actions of ACTH on aldosterone secretion are mediated by cyclic AMP formation, whereas A II and potassium stimulate aldosterone production through an independent mechanism. The lack of additivity between steroid responses to A II and potassium suggests that these factors could share a common mode of action on steroidogenesis in zona glomerulosa cells.  相似文献

During germination, the transmembrane electric potential (PD) of cortical cells of the embryonal axis of radish seeds (Raphanus sativus L.) rises from-120 mV initially to a maximum of-150 mV after 5 h incubation, then falls again to stable values of around-120 mV. Treatments inhibiting germination block the transitory PD increase. Administration of uncoupling agents or low temperatures, during the process of germination, produces a marked fall of the PD transitory increase. Abscisic Acid has a parallel inhibitory effect on PD and germination, while fusicoccin produces a rise in both; administration of abscisic acid with fusicoccin inhibits germination, while the PD remains at the high levels given by fusicoccin. Mevalonate phosphorylation was studied in neonatal chick brain. Formation of phosphorylated derivatives of mevalonic acid increased with the pH in the range assayed (5.5–9.5). Phosphomevalonate kinase was completely inactivated after treatment at 50°C for 5–10 min, whereas mevalonate kinase was found to retain its activity under the same conditions. Exposure to 65°C for 5 min resulted in the inactivation of mevalonate kinase. Both mevalonate-activating enzymes from chick brain were located primarily in the soluble fraction. The amounts of phosphomevalonic acid and pyrophosphomevalonic acid did not show a significant diurnal variation to suggest the presence of a circadian rhythm in either kinase. Cholesterol feeding and fasting had no effect on mevalonate phosphorylation by neonatal chick brain.  相似文献
