The future study of colon disease in captive callitrichid colonies may require manipulation of diets. The limited knowledge of the nutritional requirements for these species and the varied diets and supplementations fed to these animals in various colonies suggest the importance of testing the palatability and acceptability of diets for these primates. Individually housed cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) were given either the regular Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) diet (monkey chow slurry, canned diet and supplements), a similar slurry using an experimental natural ingredient diet plus supplements, or the experimental diet without supplements. Neither dry food consumption, body weight, fecal output, nor the histological evaluation of the colons were affected by these diets. Daily intake of protein and calories were higher than previously reported estimates for the species. These results demonstrate that a natural ingredient non-sweetened pelleted diet is palatable for cotton-top tamarins for a period of 3.5 months, however, further testing over longer time periods is necessary. The nonnutritional (e.g. psychological) advantages of providing a highly diverse diet to primates housed in a relatively monotonous environment should be considered before adopting such a diet for an entire colony.  相似文献

Summary A DNA fragment containing the cya gene region of Erwinia chrysanthemi, B374 was cloned in vivo and transferred into cells of E. coli using a plasmid pULB113 derived from RP4 followed by subcloning in vitro into the vector pBR322. The cya gene encodes a 95 kDal protein that complemented E. coli cya mutants. Apparently, cya genes truncated at the 3 end could still produce proteins complementing cya-defective strains, thus showing that adenylate cyclase truncated at its carboxy-terminal end could synthesise cAMP. A protein of unknown function (40 kDal) is encoded by a gene that is transcribed divergently from the control region of the adenylate cyclase gene.  相似文献

Epoxide hydrolase (EH, EC 3.3.2.3) was chosen as a potential marker for smooth endoplasmic reticulum, because this enzyme is inducible by drugs such as phenobarbital. The hypothesis was verified in rat liver using immunochemical and immunocytochemical techniques. Antibodies were raised to the purified protein. These antibodies were affinity purified using the enzyme immobilized on Sepharose Ultrogel. The specificity of the antibodies was assayed by immunoelectrotransfer (Western blot). The labelling of rat liver thin frozen sections with protein A-gold particles demonstrated that the antibodies specifically recognised smooth endoplasmic reticulum membranes. Rough endoplasmic reticulum, other intracellular organelles and plasma membrane were unlabelled.  相似文献

The first comparative profiles of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase(s) (UDPGT) activities obtained under standard conditions in vitro in mammals (man, rat [Wistar and Gunn], mouse, monkey [Papio papio and Cynomolgus], pig, guinea pig, rabbit, dog) are presented for 16 aglycones. A decreasing scale of these activities was obtained from planar to bulky molecules. The scale was identical for each of the mammals studied, including man. Statistical analysis of the results revealed a division of the aglycones into three groups, one being correlated with the molecular form called GT1 the two others with the GT2 form. The profile of activities in the Gunn rat revealed very weak activity towards planar molecules (GT1). These results provide evidence that under standard conditions, human UDPGT activities are comparable to those from other animals.  相似文献

There is considerable debate on the role of folate in CNS function. Recent work indicates that folate deficiency may affect CNS serotonin metabolism, and clinical studies describe many consequences of such a deficiency. On the other hand some workers maintain that folate deficiency alone causes CNS abnormalities. We maintained rats, through dietary deprivation, at folate levels below 4 ng/ml for more than 6 weeks and showed that at that time both their liver and brain folate levels were significantly reduced. We then studied their local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) using the [14C]deoxyglucose technique. This method assesses cerebral function by measuring regional metabolic activity. We also determined LCGU in rats given the same diet but replenished with folate (folate control) and in others given free access to commercially available food (normal controls). Our results show that this degree of folate deficiency has no effect on cerebral function. This contrasts with the focal suppression of LCGU we previously reported in a model of vitamin B12 deficiency.  相似文献

4 female Saguinus oedipus oedipus were paired with strange, unrelated males while 5 remained in their natal family groups. A comparison of the frequency of selected social interactions involving these females when sexually immature versus mature was made. The frequency of sexual and affiliative interactions in male-female pairs was basically unchanged by the female's maturation. Mother-daughter interactions were also not changed in a consistent fashion by the daughters' maturation. Females with strange, unrelated males, either alone or as part of their natal group, displayed increases in marking behavior in association with sexual maturation.  相似文献

The sessile (Quercus petraea [Matt.] Liebl.) and pedunculate (Quercus robur L.) oaks are two closely related species having a wide sympatric distribution over Europe. Under natural conditions, they frequently form mixed forests, where hybridization is suspected to occur. In this paper, two different approaches have been applied to the study of the mating system and the interspecific gene flow in a mixed stand formed by the two species. The mating systems of both species have been studied separately by means of the mixed-mating model. The relative contribution of the parental species to the progenies have been estimated with two different methods. The first uses the admixture model. The second is an extension of the mixed-mating model and subdivides the outcrossing rate into intra- and interspecific components. The two species were almost completely outcrossing. This high level of outcrossing and interspecific gene flow could play an important role in the maintenance of the genetic diversity in these long-lived forest tree species. The contribution of the sessile oak to the pedunculate oak progenies varied from 17% to 48%. In contrast, ovules of sessile oak trees appear to be preferentially fertilized by other extreme sessile genotypes. We suggest that interspecific and directional gene flow was responsible for such patterns. Pedunculate oak is considered as a pioneer species and is progressively replaced by sessile oak. Our present findings add a further genetic component to this succession scheme, suggesting that unidirectional gene flow reinforces succession between the two species.  相似文献

Abiotic and vegetation data were collected along two altitudinal transects through mature montane Quercus forests on the Pacific and Atlantic slopes of Costa Rica's Chirripó Massif. Between 2000 and 3200 m asl twenty-four 0.05 ha forest plots were selected at altitudinal intervals of 100 m, and eight soil profiles were described at intervals of 200 m. A TWINSPAN classification aided in the determination of eight zonal forest communities on the basis of their floristic composition. They are grouped in two sets of four: (i) the palm-rich lauraceous-fagaceous Lower Montane Mollinedia-Quercus Forests (2000–2600 m asl) and (ii) the bamboo-rich myrsinaceous-fagaceous Upper Montane Schefflera-Quercus Forests (2500–3200 m asl), respectively. Vegetation changes seem correlated with two major climatic gradients: (i) a temperature gradient (altitude), and (ii) a moisture gradient (wet Atlantic vs. moist Pacific slope). Most soils are Andepts, and residual, colluvial or derived from volcanic material. Humus layers are thicker on the wetter Atlantic slope. A total of 431 vascular plant species consisted of 86 pteridophytes, 1 gymnosperm, 296 dicots and 48 monocots. Species richness, canopy height and stem diameter decrease with increasing altitude, while the canopy surface becomes more flattend. A comparison with other studies shows that Chirripó's montane Quercus forests fit within the environmental ranges known from altitudinal zonations elsewhere in the Tropics.Abbreviations asl above sea level - dbh diameter at breast height - LM Lower Montane - Mt. The development of herbicide multiple-resistance in weed species represents a major threat to current agricultural practices. The mechanistic basis for herbicide multiple-resistance has been investigated in a population of the annual grass weed Lolium rigidum Gaud. (annual ryegrass) resistant to herbicides affecting 6 target sites. A subset of the resistant population (R2 subset) has been isolated by germination on a medium containing the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase, EC 6.4.1.2) inhibiting herbicide, sethoxydim ((2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one)). This 12% R2 subset of the population is 600 times more resistant to sethoxydim and between 30 to 200 times more resistant to other ACCase inhibitors than the bulk of the R population. The subset has a form of ACCase which is 6 to 55 times less sensitive to inhibition by these herbicides than the enzyme present in the bulk of the resistant or in the susceptible population. There was no difference in the uptake and metabolic degradation of [4-14C]sethoxydim between the R2 subset and the unselected R population. These results show the accumulation of different resistance mechanisms in that single population. Furthermore we propose that this accumulation of multiple resistance mechanisms is the basis for herbicide multiple-resistance in this biotype.  相似文献
