ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of sleep problems in a community-based sample of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in Norway, and their associated factors. METHODS: 176 consecutive PD outpatients (41% females) were included in a study of non-motor symptoms, including sleep problems. All participants responded to the Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS), where an overall score below 82 or a score below 5 on a sub-item indicate possible sleep problem. Factors associated with sleep were also investigated, with special emphasis on severity of PD, fatigue, mental health and restless legs syndrome (RLS). RESULTS: The mean age was 68.5 years (range 35--90); the mean Hoehn and Yahr stage was 2.11 (SD 0.86), and the mean UPDRS part III was 22.3 (SD 11.7). Sleep problems were common among PD patients. While only 17% of the sample had an overall score below 82 on the PDSS, 70% of the patients had a score below 5 on one item. There was no significant association between PD severity and any of the sleep items in the PDSS; whereas fatigue, mental health problems, and RLS were associated with PDSS score. CONCLUSIONS: The current findings call for increased awareness of sleep problems in PD patients, especially focusing on the association with mental health problems, fatigue and RLS. 相似文献

Documenting the Neotropical amphibian diversity has become a major challenge facing the threat of global climate change and the pace of environmental alteration. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have revealed that the actual number of species in South American tropical forests is largely underestimated, but also that many lineages are millions of years old. The genera Phyzelaphryne (1 sp.) and Adelophryne (6 spp.), which compose the subfamily Phyzelaphryninae, include poorly documented, secretive, and minute frogs with an unusual distribution pattern that encompasses the biotic disjunction between Amazonia and the Atlantic forest. We generated >5.8kb sequence data from six markers for all seven nominal species of the subfamily as well as for newly discovered populations in order to (1) test the monophyly of Phyzelaphryninae, Adelophryne and Phyzelaphryne, (2) estimate species diversity within the subfamily, and (3) investigate their historical biogeography and diversification. Phylogenetic reconstruction confirmed the monophyly of each group and revealed deep subdivisions within Adelophryne and Phyzelaphryne, with three major clades in Adelophryne located in northern Amazonia, northern Atlantic forest and southern Atlantic forest. Our results suggest that the actual number of species in Phyzelaphryninae is, at least, twice the currently recognized species diversity, with almost every geographically isolated population representing an anciently divergent candidate species. Such results highlight the challenges for conservation, especially in the northern Atlantic forest where it is still degraded at a fast pace. Molecular dating revealed that Phyzelaphryninae originated in Amazonia and dispersed during early Miocene to the Atlantic forest. The two Atlantic forest clades of Adelophryne started to diversify some 7Ma minimum, while the northern Amazonian Adelophryne diversified much earlier, some 13Ma minimum. This striking biogeographic pattern coincides with major events that have shaped the face of the South American continent, as we know it today. 相似文献

Dendrophryniscus is an early diverging clade of bufonids represented by few small-bodied species distributed in Amazonia and the Atlantic Forest. We used mitochondrial (414 bp of 12S, 575 bp of 16S genes) and nuclear DNA (785 bp of RAG-1) to investigate phylogenetic relationships and the timing of diversification within the genus. These molecular data were gathered from 23 specimens from 19 populations, including eight out of the 10 nominal species of the genus as well as Rhinella boulengeri. Analyses also included sequences of representatives of 18 other bufonid genera that were publically available. We also examined morphological characters to analyze differences within Dendrophryniscus. We found deep genetic divergence between an Amazonian and an Atlantic Forest clade, dating back to Eocene. Morphological data corroborate this distinction. We thus propose to assign the Amazonian species to a new genus, Amazonella. The species currently named R. boulengeri, which has been previously assigned to the genus Rhamphophryne, is shown to be closely related to Dendrophryniscus species. Our findings illustrate cryptic trends in bufonid morphological evolution, and point to a deep history of persistence and diversification within the Amazonian and Atlantic rainforests. We discuss our results in light of available paleoecological data and the biogeographic patterns observed in other similarly distributed groups. 相似文献

Background
One central concept in evolutionary ecology is that current and residual reproductive values are negatively linked by the so-called cost of reproduction. Previous studies examining the nature of this cost suggested a possible involvement of oxidative stress resulting from the imbalance between pro- and anti-oxidant processes. Still, data remain conflictory probably because, although oxidative damage increases during reproduction, high systemic levels of oxidative stress might also constrain parental investment in reproduction. Here, we investigated variation in oxidative balance (i.e. oxidative damage and antioxidant defences) over the course of reproduction by comparing female laboratory mice rearing or not pups.Results
A significant increase in oxidative damage over time was only observed in females caring for offspring, whereas antioxidant defences increased over time regardless of reproductive status. Interestingly, oxidative damage measured prior to reproduction was negatively associated with litter size at birth (constraint), whereas damage measured after reproduction was positively related to litter size at weaning (cost).Conclusions
Globally, our correlative results and the review of literature describing the links between reproduction and oxidative stress underline the importance of timing/dynamics when studying and interpreting oxidative balance in relation to reproduction. Our study highlights the duality (constraint and cost) of oxidative stress in life-history trade-offs, thus supporting the theory that oxidative stress plays a key role in life-history evolution.995.

Social insect cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) mixtures are among the most complex chemical cues known and are important in nest-mate, caste and species recognition. Despite our growing knowledge of the nature of these cues, we have very little insight into how social insects actually perceive and discriminate among these chemicals. In this study, we use the newly developed technique of differential olfactory conditioning to pure, custom-designed synthetic colony odours to analyse signal discrimination in Argentine ants, Linepithema humile. Our results show that tri-methyl alkanes are more easily learned than single-methyl or straight-chain alkanes. In addition, we reveal that Argentine ants can discriminate between hydrocarbons with different branching patterns and the same chain length, but not always between hydrocarbons with the same branching patterns but different chain length. Our data thus show that biochemical characteristics influence those compounds that ants can discriminate between, and which thus potentially play a role in chemical signalling and nest-mate recognition. 相似文献

Rat tail suspension is commonly used to mimic human physiology in space. However, energy metabolism adaptation and related autonomic responses are unknown. To give new insights in energy homeostasis, we determined total energy expenditure (TEE) and blood flow redistribution in thermoregulatory organs during suspension using two control groups of animals widely accepted in the literature: the individually housed (isolated) and restraint rats (horizontally attached to the suspension device). Rats (n=33) were randomly assigned during 14-days to three experimental groups: isolated, suspended, or attached. TEE was assessed by a doubly labeled water method throughout the 14 days, and regional blood flow by radiolabeled microsphere procedure at the end of the protocol. Attachment vs. suspension resulted in a significant decrease in TEE (25%), skin (54%), adrenal (55%) and kidney (42%) blood flows, cardiac index (33%), and plasma corticosterone (50%), whereas total peripheral resistances increased (50%). Isolation vs. attachment triggered an inverse response, of similar amplitude, for all above variables. By comparing isolation and suspension, no overall effect was observed. The striking conclusion of this study is that no clear conclusion can be drawn. The choice of the isolated or attached animals as control profoundly influences the outcome results regarding the effects of simulated weightlessness. Further studies are needed but we favor the attached group as the true control since, from a theoretical point of view, a suspended rat is attached plus suspended. In such conditions, TEE decreases to the same extent in rat and humans during simulated microgravity. When reviewing published experiments, we recommend special attention to the control group used rather than on the effects of suspension as compared to an undefined control. 相似文献

Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) is the key enzyme in the fixation of CO(2) in the Calvin cycle of plants. Many genome projects have revealed that bacteria, including Bacillus subtilis, possess genes for proteins that are similar to the large subunit of RuBisCO. These RuBisCO homologues are called RuBisCO-like proteins (RLPs) because they are not able to catalyse the carboxylase or the oxygenase reactions that are catalysed by photosynthetic RuBisCO. It has been demonstrated that B. subtilis RLP catalyses the 2,3-diketo-5-methylthiopentyl-1-phosphate (DK-MTP-1-P) enolase reaction in the methionine salvage pathway. The structure of DK-MTP-1-P is very similar to that of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) and the enolase reaction is a part of the reaction catalysed by photosynthetic RuBisCO. In this review, functional and evolutionary relationships between B. subtilis RLP of the methionine salvage pathway, other RLPs, and photosynthetic RuBisCO are discussed. In addition, the fundamental question, 'How has RuBisCO evolved?' is also considered, and evidence is presented that RuBisCOs evolved from RLPs. 相似文献

This study describes the application and evaluation of a recently developed fast bacterial typing technique (double digest selective label - DDSL) for hospital isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The protocol was based on a simultaneous double digestion/labelling reaction which was performed in a single reaction tube. After agarose gel separation selectively tagged restriction fragments were transferred using deonised water to a nylon membrane and visualized by a colour reaction. Starting from overnight culture, turn around time using this technique was only 8 h. The DDSL typing technique was applied for 77 hospital isolates. Among them 63 isolates were also typed by PFGE and the typing results were compared with those of DDSL. In conclusion, both techniques discriminated bacterial isolates into the same major clusters. DDSL proved to be as discriminatory as PFGE but much faster and easier to set up in a standard microbiological laboratory. 相似文献

The present work reports on the preparation of glass surfaces coated with NPPOC-protected aminooxy groups and their use for the patterning of oligonucleotides on glass slides and in capillary tubes. The method involves the use of surfaces coated with amino groups using (gamma-aminopropyl)triethoxy silane and subsequent grafting of the aminooxy groups by using the activated ester 1. The NPPOC-protected aminooxy groups on the surfaces can be cleaved upon irradiation. The present work was aimed at exploring a series of R/S-3,4-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-6-halo-4-(phenylaminothiocarbonylamino)-2H-1-benzopyrans structurally related to (+/-)-cromakalim and differently substituted at the 4- and 6-positions. The biological effects of these putative activators of ATP-sensitive potassium channels (K(ATP)) were characterized in vitro on the pancreatic endocrine tissue (inhibition of insulin release) and on the vascular smooth muscle tissue (relaxation of aorta rings). The biological activity of these new dimethylchroman derivatives was further compared to that of (+/-)-cromakalim, (+/-)-pinacidil, diazoxide and BPDZ 73. Structure-activity relationships indicated that an improved potency for the pancreatic tissue was obtained by introducing a meta- or a para-electron-withdrawing group such as a chlorine atom on the C-4 phenyl ring, independently of the nature of the halogen atom at the 6-position of the benzopyran nucleus. Most original dimethylchroman thioureas were more potent than their 'urea' homologues and even more potent than diazoxide at inhibiting insulin release. Moreover, and unlike (+/-)-cromakalim or (+/-)-pinacidil, such compounds appeared to be highly selective towards the pancreatic tissue. Radioisotopic and fluorimetric investigations indicated that the new drugs activated pancreatic K(ATP) channels. Lastly, conformational studies suggested that the urea/thiourea dimethylchromans can be regarded as hybrid compounds between cromakalim and pinacidil. 相似文献
