Summary The iliofibularis muscle ofXenopus laevis is reported to contain five types of fibres which have different force—velocity relationships. Ten fibres of each type were selected on the basis of succinate dehydrogenase activity, cross-sectional area and location in the muscle, in order to assess the validity of the fibre type classification.Maximum calcium-stimulated myofibrillar ATPase activity (V max) and apparent Michaelis constant (K m) for ATP were determined for these 50 fibres from serial sections. The values obtained varied according to the type of fibre. Type 1 had the highest and type 5 the lowest values forK m andV max.In a separate experiment, single freeze-dried fibres were used to determine the relationship between their ATP content and apparentK m for ATP. There was a tendency for high ATP concentrations in fibres with highK m values.When myofibrillar ATPase activity was related to the maximum velocity of shortening of the five fibre types, a significant correlation was found. It is concluded that calcium-stimulated myofibrillar ATPase histochemistry allows an estimate of the maximum shortening velocity of muscle fibres fromXenopus laevis.  相似文献

The effects of mammalian gonadotropins, methyltestosterone and partially purified salmon gonadotropin on spermiation and oocyte maturation were studied in adult grey mullet. Methyltestosterone was a potent spermiating agent in both prespawning and spawning trials. The most effective dose was 5 mg/100 g body weight. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) was moderately effective at a dose rate of 20 IU/100 g body weight. Both hormones blocked resorption of milt in captive animals. The HCG, FSH/LH combination, Synahorin+mullet pituitary homogenate, and partially purified salmon gonadotropin were equally effective, at the doses used, in inducing oocyte maturation and preventing onset of atrophy before completion of vitellogenesis. Atrophy occurred in all experimental fish at mean oocyte diameter of 750 μ. The significance of this finding is discussed. (Oceanic Institute Contribution No. 98).  相似文献

Abstract— 2-Hydroxy-, 2-chloro-, 2- and Cmethyl-GABA are linear competitive inhibitors of GABA uptake in rat brain slices. These analogues are thus potential substrates for the GABA transport system and possible'false transmitters'. 2-Hydroxy-GABA is the most potent inhibitor of GABA uptake yet described. No specific inhibitor of GABA uptake was revealed amongst the drugs tested.  相似文献

AS it is not widely appreciated that diffusion within complex media can be strikingly and often qualitatively different from that in simple liquids such as water, there is confusion concerning transport processes across biological membranes1,2. We would like to draw attention to some fundamental differences between the diffusion process in simple liquids and that in more complex media-non-porous networks of hydrophobic polymers and biological membranes.  相似文献

Morphological and genetic variation at microsatellite loci of Caucasian shrew Sorex satunini Ogn. is examined and compared with that of the common shrew S. araneus L. Genetic distance at microsatellite loci between the common shrew and Caucasian shrew proved to be threefold higher than between chromosome races of the common shrew. The Caucasian shrew manifested low polymorphism in studies of both microsatellites and morphometric mandibular traits. The heterozygote deficit was also typical. These properties may be a consequence of partial isolation of the population and gene drift.  相似文献
