YIELD, a parametric crop production model, employs climatic data to calculate actual and potential yield for various crops and includes formulations for specific crop and growth stage effects. The objective was to demonstrate the sensitivity of YIELD for grain corn (maize) to changes in various environmental and decision-making inputs. Five temperature, five solar radiation, six relative humidity regimes, five water application schemes, and four irrigation frequencies were included in this study. The effects of different soil types and wind regimes on crop water requirements were investigated. The model output includes crop yield, water use efficiency, and management efficiency. Among the results, yield decreased on the average by 3.9% per one degree (C) increase in air temperature. A 1% change in solar radiation resulted in an average of 1% change in yield. Similar changes in relative humidity caused a yield change of about 0.8%. 相似文献

Stable internal fixation usually results in a unique histological healing pattern which involves direct cortical reconstruction and an absence of periosteal bridging callus. While it has been suggested that longitudinal interfragmentary strain levels control this healing pattern, the complex, multiaxial strain fields in the interfragmentary region are not well understood. Based on an in-vivo study of gap healing in the sheep tibia by Mansmann et al., we used several finite element models of simplified geometry to: explore modeling assumptions on material linearity and deformation kinematics, and examine the strain distribution in a healing fracture gap subjected to known levels of interfragmentary strain. We found that a general nonlinear material, nonlinear geometric analysis is necessary to model an osteotomy gap subjected to a maximum longitudinal strain of 100 percent. The large displacement, large strain conditions which were used in the in-vivo study result in complex, multiaxial strain fields in the gap. Restricting the maximum longitudinal strain to 10 percent allows use of a linear geometric formulation without compromising the numerical results. At this reduced strain level a linear material model can be used to examine the extent of material yielding within a homogeneous osteotomy gap. Severe local strain variations occurred both through the thickness of the gap and radially from the endosteal to periosteal gap surfaces. The bone/gap interface represented a critical plane of high distortional and volumetric change and principal strain magnitudes exceeded the maximum longitudinal strains. 相似文献

A small animal model of arterial insufficiency is presented which involves unilateral femoral artery ligation and section. Invoked alterations in metabolism and perfusion of the affected muscle mass have been investigated 12 h, 4, 7 and 14 days post-ligation by 31P-n.m.r. and microsphere infusion, both at rest and during isometric muscle contraction at 1 Hz. At rest, the concentration of phosphocreatine was similar to the mean control value (36.0 +/- 1.0 mM) from 4 days post-ligation, but was significantly lower at 12 h (28.5 +/- 3.6 mM). Inorganic phosphate concentrations were significantly elevated for 7 days post-ligation. No significant differences were noted in intramuscular pH. Upon stimulation of the affected muscle mass, a time-dependent improvement in phosphocreatine utilization was observed such that 14 days post-ligation phosphocreatine utilization was not significantly different from mean control values. A similar amelioration was noted for the contraction-induced fall in intramuscular pH. At rest, no significant differences in bloodflow to the muscles of the ligated limb compared with the unaffected contralateral limb were observed. However, isometric contraction of the affected muscle mass resulted in a markedly reduced hyperaemic response 12 h post-ligation. Thereafter, a time-dependent improvement in tissue perfusion during stimulation was observed which paralleled the improvements in phosphocreatine utilization and intramuscular pH changes. An advantage of aprotic polar solvent systems in the study of monomer interactions relevant to the macromolecular state is demonstrated with the measurement of nucleoside amino proton exchange rates in DMSO/water mixtures. The DMSO/water solvent provides the first unequivocal observation of general acid catalysis of nucleic acid amino proton exchange, which is undetectable in aqueous solution due to the formation of the endocyclic protonated nucleobase. Suppression of nucleobase protonation in the presence of buffer acid is a consequence of anion desolvation in the aprotic solvent. The detected route of general acid catalysis is demonstrated as a consequence of Watson-Crick H-bonding, leading to the implication that amino chemistry is modulated in the helical state to decrease amino proton lifetime in the closed macromolecular context of conformational information obtained by hydrogen exchange methods. This useful property of the aprotic solvent can be extended to monomeric studies pertaining to specific local site interactions affecting the function and conformation of proteins and nucleic acids. 相似文献

The majority of the high (12-fold elevated) baseline sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs) that occur in the CHO mutant line EM9 appear to be a consequence of incorporated BrdUrd, and they arise during replication of DNA containing BrdUrd in a template strand. In normal CHO cells the alkaline elution patterns of DNA newly replicated on a BrdUrd-containing template are significantly altered compared with those seen during the replication on an unsubstituted template. The nascent DNA synthesized on such an altered template is delayed in reaching mature size, possibly because replication forks are temporarily blocked at sites occurring randomly along the template. Transient blockage of replication forks may be a prerequisite for SCE. The delay in replication on BrdUrd-substituted templates was greater in EM9 cells than in parental AA8 cells and was also greater in AA8 cells treated with benzamide, an inhibitor of poly(ADPR) polymerase, than in untreated AA8 cells. Under these conditions, treatment with benzamide also produced a 7-fold increase in SCEs in AA8. An EM9-derived revertant line that has a low baseline SCE frequency showed less delay in replication on BrdUrd-substituted templates than did EM9. However, under conditions where the template strand contained CldUrd, which was shown to produce 4-fold more SCEs than BrdUrd in AA8 cells, the replication delay in AA8 was not any greater in the CldUrd-substituted cells. Thus, other factors besides the delay appear to be involved in the production of SCEs by the template lesions resulting from incorporation of the halogen-substituted pyrimidine molecules. 相似文献

Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies were conducted on human platelet plasma membranes using 5-nitroxide stearate, I(12,3). The polarity-corrected order parameter S and polarity-uncorrected order parameters S(T parallel) and S(T perpendicular) were independent of probe concentration at low I(12.3)/membrane protein ratios. At higher ratios, S and S(T perpendicular) decreased with increasing probe concentration while S(T parallel) remained unchanged. This is the result of enhanced radical interactions due to probe clustering. A lipid phase separation occurs in platelet membranes that segregates I(12,3) for temperatures less than 37 degrees C. As Arrhenius plots of platelet acid phosphatase activity exhibit a break at 35 to 36 degrees C, this enzyme activity may be influenced by the above phase separation. Similar experiments were performed on native [cholesterol/phospholipid ratio (C/P) = 0.71] and cholesterol-enriched [C/P = 0.85] rat liver plasma membranes. At 36 degrees C, cholesterol loading reduces I(12,3) flexibility and decreases the probe ratio at which radical interactions are apparent. The latter effects are attributed to the formation of cholesterol-rich lipid domains, and to the inability of I(12,3) to partition into these domains because of steric hinderance. Cholesterol enrichment increases both the high temperature onset of the phase separation occurring in liver membranes from 28 degrees to 37 degrees C and the percentage of probe-excluding, cholesterol-rich lipid domains at elevated temperatures. A model is discussed attributing the lipid phase separation in native liver plasma membranes to cholesterol-rich and -poor domains. As I(12,3) behaves similarly in cholesterol-enriched liver and human platelet plasma membranes, cholesterol-rich and -poor domains probably exist in both systems at physiologic temperatures. 相似文献
