It is clear from reviewing the findings of our own studies and those of others that the cerebral cortex has combined two very different strategies of organisation. Firstly it has a strictly defined genetically determined substrate of specific neurons classes, specific rules for which kinds of cells interconnect, a laminar architecture where efferent and afferent relays and interlaminar links are predetermined. But, as well, a second strategy allows great developmental lability in the precise spatial patterns of intralaminar circuits of the excitatory neurons and in the actual weights of excitatory and inhibitory synapses that are contributed to each neuron. This second strategy presumably allows the cortex to be tailor-made to the early experience of each individual and, as well, allow for lability of responses to different conditions of stimulation and adjustment of the system to compensate to some degree for injuries affecting afferents and circuitry in the adult system.  相似文献

Requirements for seed germination (emergence of radicle) andseedling formation (emergence of both radicle and cotyledons)of a hemi-root parasite Sopubia delphinifolia were studied inthe absence of any host stimulus, in Petri dish and asepticcultures. Both water washing in trickling tap water as wellas cold treatment were effective in inducing/stimulating germinationand seedling formation in the light. Although ethrel, an ethylenereleasing compound, stimulated radicle emergence it inhibitedthe emergence of the cotyledons. Light was found to be essentialfor germination; none of the growth substances could replacethe light requirement. Light responses seem to be mediated throughthe phytochrome system. The results indicate that the emergenceof the radicle, its further growth into the root and the emergenceof cotyledons are controlled by different factors. A review of in vitro mutagenesis assessment of metal compounds in mammalian and nonmammalian test systems has been compiled. Prokaryotic assays are ineffective or inconsistent in their detection of most metals as mutagens, with the notable exception of hexavalent chromium. Mammalian assay systems appear to be similarly inappropriate for the screening of metal compounds based upon the limited number of studies that have employed those compounds having known carcinogenic activity. Although of limited value as screening tests for the detection of potentially carcinogenic metal compounds, the well-characterized in vitro mutagenesis systems may prove to be of significant value as a means to elucidate mechanisms of metal genotoxicity.  相似文献

Electromyography (EMG) is commonly used to determine the electrical activity of skeletal muscle during contraction. To date, independent verification of the relationship between muscle use and EMG has not been provided. It has recently been shown that relaxation- (e.g., T2) weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) of skeletal muscle demonstrate exercise-induced contrast enhancement that is graded with exercise intensity. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that exercise-induced magnetic resonance (MR) contrast shifts would relate to EMG amplitude if both measures reflect muscle use during exercise. Both MRI and EMG data were collected for separate eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) exercise of increasing intensity to take advantage of the fact that the rate of increase and amplitude of EMG activity are markedly greater for CON muscle actions. Seven subjects 30 +/- 2 (SE) yr old performed five sets of 10 CON or ECC arm curls with each of four resistances representing 40, 60, 80, and 100% of their 10 repetition maximum for CON curls. There was 1.5 min between sets and 30 min between bouts (5 sets of 10 actions at each relative resistance). Multiple echo, transaxial T2-weighted MR images (1.5 T, TR/TE 2,000/30) were collected from a 7-cm region in the middle of the arm before exercise and immediately after each bout. Surface EMG signals were collected from both heads of the biceps brachii and the long head of the triceps brachii muscles. CON and ECC actions resulted in increased integrated EMG (IEMG) and T2 values that were strongly related (r = 0.99, P < 0.05) with relative resistance.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Sheep are used as models for the human spine, yet comparative in vivo data necessary for validation is limited. The purpose of this study was therefore to compare spinal motion and trunk muscle activity during active trunk movements in sheep and humans. Three-dimensional kinematic data as well as surface electromyography (sEMG) of spinal flexion and extension was compared in twenty-four humans in upright (UR) and 4-point kneeling (KN) postures and in 17 Austrian mountain sheep. Kinematic markers were attached over the sacrum, posterior iliac spines, and spinous and transverse processes of T5, T8, T11, L2 and L5 in humans and over the sacrum, tuber sacrale, T5, T8, T12, L3 and L7 in sheep. The activity of erector spinae (ES), rectus abdominis (RA), obliquus externus (OE), and obliquus internus (OI) were collected. Maximum sEMG (MOE) was identified for each muscle and trial, and reported as a percentage (MOE%) of the overall maximally observed sEMG from all trials. Spinal range of motion was significantly smaller in sheep compared to humans (UR / KN) during flexion (sheep: 6–11°; humans 12–34°) and extension (sheep: 4°; humans: 11–17°). During extension, MOE% of ES was greater in sheep (median: 77.37%) than UR humans (24.89%), and MOE% of OE and OI was greater in sheep (OE 76.20%; OI 67.31%) than KN humans (OE 21.45%; OI 19.34%), while MOE% of RA was lower in sheep (21.71%) than UR humans (82.69%). During flexion, MOE% of RA was greater in sheep (83.09%) than humans (KN 47.42%; UR 41.38%), and MOE% of ES in sheep (45.73%) was greater than KN humans (14.45%), but smaller than UR humans (72.36%). The differences in human and sheep spinal motion and muscle activity suggest that caution is warranted when ovine data are used to infer human spine biomechanics.  相似文献
