The structure-directing influence of the organic dicarboxylates malonate, succinate, glutarate and adipate as templating species on the hydrothermal formation of CaCO(3) was investigated at different temperatures (60, 80, 90, 120, 150 and 190 degrees C) and with a range of molar ratios of [Ca(2+)]/[templating species] (20, 14.3, 10, 7.7, 5, 1, 0.5 and 0.33). In the presence of the dicarboxylates, one, two or three polymorphs of CaCO(3) - calcite, aragonite and vaterite - could be formed, depending on the reaction conditions. In addition changes in crystal morphology were observed for the CaCO(3) polymorphs depending on the concentration of the template. In contrast, synthesis under ambient conditions of temperature and pressure resulted only in calcite formation, although template-dependent morphological changes were again observed. Crystalline products were all characterized by powder X-ray patterns and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) micrographs. The ambient reactions with the chelating, dinucleating carboxylato ligands H(3)heidi and H(5)hpdta produce more profound changes in calcite morphology. With H(3)heidi rounded calcite crystals with shapes similar to that of otoliths are formed and with H(5)hpdta the formation of microtrumpets of constructed from bundles of nanocrystals of calcite is observed. The possible mode of action of these ligands on calcite formation is discussed in the context of known coordination chemistry with other metal ions. 相似文献

Classical optimality models of offspring size and number assume a monotonically increasing relationship between offspring size and performance. In aquatic organisms with complex life cycles, the size–performance function is particularly hard to grasp because measures of performance are varied and their relationships with size may not be consistent throughout early ontogeny. Here, we examine size effects in premetamorphic (larval) and postmetamorphic (juvenile) stages of brooding marine animals and show that they vary contextually in strength and direction during ontogeny and among species. Larger offspring of the sea anemone Urticina felina generally outperformed small siblings at the larval stage (i.e., greater settlement and survival rates under suboptimal conditions). However, results differed when analyses were conducted at the intrabrood versus across‐brood levels, suggesting that the relationship between larval size and performance is mediated by parentage. At the juvenile stage (15 months), small offspring were less susceptible than large ones to predation by subadult nudibranchs and both sizes performed similarly when facing adult nudibranchs. In a sympatric species with a different life history (Aulactinia stella), all juveniles suffered similar predation rates by subadult nudibranchs, but smaller juveniles performed better (lower mortalities) when facing adult nudibranchs. Size differences in premetamorphic performance of U. felina were linked to total lipid contents of larvae, whereas size‐specific predation of juvenile stages followed the general predictions of the optimal foraging strategy. These findings emphasize the challenge in gathering empirical support for a positive monotonic size–performance function in taxa that exhibit complex life cycles, which are dominant in the sea. 相似文献

Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used to investigate the radiation-induced effects on Kocuria rosea. Bacterial suspensions at the stationary phase were exposed to increasing doses of gamma radiation. In the region 1350-840cm(-1), assigned to phosphodiester backbone, nucleic acids, and sugar rings, the radical damaging effects were dose-dependent, with the first threshold at 2.75kGy and the second at 13.75kGy inducing more striking spectral variations. Postirradiation reincubation did not significantly affect the biomolecular response, except in the spectral range 1100-1000cm(-1). These observations suggest the occurrence of new phylogenetic characteristics for K. rosea following irradiation. Moreover, two-dimensional analysis was used to highlight correlated evolutions of molecular species as radical aggression increased. The results point to an evolutionary scheme during the time course of irradiation. Thus, one- and two-dimensional IR analyses are convenient means of investigating the metabolic events following oxidative stress generated by either chemical or physical agents. 相似文献
