Background  

The comprehension of the gene regulatory code in eukaryotes is one of the major challenges of systems biology, and is a requirement for the development of novel therapeutic strategies for multifactorial diseases. Its bi-fold degeneration precludes brute force and statistical approaches based on the genomic sequence alone. Rather, recursive integration of systematic, whole-genome experimental data with advanced statistical regulatory sequence predictions needs to be developed. Such experimental approaches as well as the prediction tools are only starting to become available and increasing numbers of genome sequences and empirical sequence annotations are under continual discovery-driven change. Furthermore, given the complexity of the question, a decade(s) long multi-laboratory effort needs to be envisioned. These constraints need to be considered in the creation of a framework that can pave a road to successful comprehension of the gene regulatory code.  相似文献

Expression microarrays represent a powerful technique for the simultaneous investigation of thousands of genes. The evidence that genes are not randomly distributed in the genome and that their coordinated expression depends on their position on chromosomes has highlighted the need for mathematical approaches to exploit this dependency for the analysis of expression data-sets.  相似文献

The susceptibility of Oryctes rhinoceros adults to infections due to entomopathogenic fungi (Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria tenella, Metarrhizium anisopliae, Paecilomyces fumoso-roseus, and Spicaria rileyi) was studied by spraying titrated spores suspensions on the insect integument. As part of the Journal of Cell communication and Signaling publishing staff, we are very much attached to the freedom of expression given to our authors. This has been exemplified in our willingness to stimulate commentaries and open debates through the Bits and Bytes series published in JCCS.Without willing to take part in the debate regarding the nature of the drawings published in Charlie Hebdo, we recognize the worldwide response to the recent murdering of journalists as strong support of freedom of the press , however, we also felt that attempts to silence other forms of expression, which are numerous these days, should be reminded and fought against.In this editorial we pay homage to the victims of recent tragic events in Paris and to all who fight every day for freedom of expression.  相似文献

To gain more insight into the impact of zinc on the primary metabolites in rapeseed, plants were regenerated in vitro in the presence of zinc (0.1–1 mM), acclimatized, transferred to a greenhouse, and treated with 2 mM ZnSO4. The main metabolites, including soluble carbohydrates and free amino acids, were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and further confirmed by spectrophotometry and enzymatic analyses. Exposure of these greenhouse-grown plants to ZnSO4 led to both a significant rise of the total amino acid level and an increase of proline accumulation in the different tissues. Moreover, the control plants, regenerated without zinc stress, exhibited a significant reduction of soluble carbohydrate levels, whereas the plants derived from Zn-treated regenerants exhibited significantly higher levels of both glucose and sucrose. These levels increased proportionally with the Zn concentration in the regeneration step.  相似文献
