Plant species affect the oviposition behavior of the zoophytophagous predator Orius insidiosus. This study was conducted to determine whether manipulating plant quality, via stress, within a single plant species (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) would affect the oviposition behavior of O. insidiosus and the subsequent performance of its offspring. Plants that had water withheld (water-stressed treatment) had about 20% less total dry weight than plants that were watered to alleviate the drought stress (unstressed treatment). In comparison to unstressed plants, unifoliolate leaves and petioles of water-stressed plants had about 20 and 12% less relative water content, 54 and 29% greater sap osmotic potential, and 19 and 70% greater concentrations of amino-nitrogen, respectively. Reproductive O. insidiosus were then presented stressed and unstressed plants in a two choice test to determine oviposition preference. First instar survival on the two treatments was evaluated in no-choice tests. Orius insidiosus laid 70% more eggs per cm2 on the stressed plants. The lifespan of newly-hatched nymphs was the same in both treatments. Eggs were more frequently laid on the leaf vein than the petiole of unstressed plants, whereas in stressed plants oviposition on these parts occurred at equal frequency. These findings suggest that physiological changes in water-stressed bean plants created conditions more favorable for O. insidiosus oviposition. As there was no increase in offspring performance, it is hypothesized that females chose oviposition sites near preferred feeding sites or plant tissues that were less prone to desiccation.  相似文献

A miniature Geiger-Müller probe was inserted into one ovary of 8 women undergoing hysterectomy. A control probe was inserted into the other ovary of 2 of the women. Krypton-85 in 0.15 M-NaCl was infused into the adjacent utero-ovarian vein and the radioactivity was registered for 5--14 min after the infusion. An increase of radioactivity was recorded in the ovary in 5 cases. In one of the women with 2 probes, no increase in radioactivity was observed in the control ovary. The results show a local transfer of gas from the ovarian branch of the uterine vein into the adjacent ovary, which may be due to a countercurrent exchange mechanism between the vessels of the human uterine adnexa.  相似文献

Male Syrian hamsters were scheduled to be exposed by inhalation approximately every 60 days for 1 year (7 exposures) to aerosols of 239PuO2 beginning at 84 days of age. Other hamsters were exposed once when 84 or 320 days of age. Plutonium-239 deposited in the lungs by the repeated inhalation exposures was cleared from the lungs at a rate similar to that following a single inhalation exposure. The incidence of radiation pneumonitis, bronchiolar epithelial hyperplasia, and alveolar squamous metaplasia were the only lesions that were related to radiation dose. Only two primary lung tumours were found among the hamsters exposed to 239PuO2. No primary lung tumours were found in the control hamsters. It was concluded that the incidence of lung tumours was not increased by the protraction of the alpha radiation dose to the lungs from repeated inhalation exposure.  相似文献

The production of free radicals in human neutrophils was studied in both Pneumocystis carinii derived from cultures of L2 rat lung epithelial-like cells and Pneumocystis carinii purified from human lung. Using the cytochrome C technique, which selectively measured extracellular superoxide generation, hardly any free radical production was observed after stimulation with cultured rat-derived P. carinii. A chemiluminescence technique, which separately measured intra- and extracellular free radical production, was subsequently employed to differentiate the free radical generation. It was established that 1) P. carinii stimulated intra- but not extracellular free radical production in human neutrophils. 2) opsonized cultured rat-derived P. carinii stimulated human neutrophils to a strong intra-cellular response of superoxide production, and 3) opsonized P. carinii. purified from human lung also stimulated human neutrophils to produce intracellular free radicals.  相似文献

Insulin secretion declines progressively before and during the course of type 2 diabetes. Evidence indicates that this process is, in part, secondary to increased requirement for insulin secretion that is brought about by insulin resistance and by hyperglycemia. The effects of over-secretion extend far beyond a mere reduction of available insulin stores and may cause not only functional but also structural damage. The time is ripe for clinical studies, which explore the therapeutic potential of reducing over-secretion.  相似文献

The stereochemical specificity of lysosomal lipase of rat liver was investigated using enantiomeric triacylglycerol analogs, sn-1-alkyl-2,3-diacylglycerol and sn-3-alkyl-1,2-diacylglycerol as substrates. Lysosomal lipase utilized both substrates with equal rates. The dependence of the activity of lysosomal lipase on the stereoconfiguration of activating acidic phospholipid was also studied. Our results showed that both sn-3-phospholipids (diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylserine) and sn-1-phospholipids (bis(monoacylglycero)phosphate (BMP) were efficient activators of this enzyme and thus the stereochemical configuration of the activating phospholipid is not important. Accordingly, the rat liver lysosomal lipase lacks stereospecificity with respect to both the triacylglycerol substrate and the acidic phospholipid activator.  相似文献
