Ultrastructural differences between the myelin sheaths of peripheral nerve fibres and CNS white matter

Summary Electron microscopic studies of peripheral nerves and spinal cord white matter of adult mice, as prepared by the freeze-etching method, show distinct differences in the periodicity of the myelin lamellae as well as of the ultrastructural lamellar pattern. A periodicity of 185 Å is to be determined for peripheral myelin whereas it is 160 Å in the myelin of central origin.In contrast to the appearance in the peripheral myelin the lamellar structure in the central myelin sheath is less pronounced and tends towards a fundamental repeating unit of 80 Å.This work was supported by the Swiss National Foundation (Nr. 4065).     

Ruddy turnstones Arenaria interpres rapidly build pectoral muscle after raptor scares

To cope with changes in the environment, organisms not only show behavioural but also phenotypic adjustments. This is well established for the digestive tract. Here we present a first case of birds adjusting their flight machinery in response to predation risk. In an indoor experiment, ruddy turnstones Arenaria interpres were subjected to an unpredictable daily appearance of either a raptor or a small gull (as a control). Ruddy turnstones experiencing threat induced by a flying raptor model, longer than after similar passage by the gull model, refrained from feeding after this disturbance. Pectoral muscle mass, but not lean mass, responded in a course of a few days to changes in the perceived threat of predation. Pectoral muscle mass increased after raptor scares. Taking the small increases in body mass into account, pectoral muscle mass was 3.6% higher than aerodynamically predicted for constant flight performance. This demonstrates that perceived risk factors may directly affect organ size.     

Reactive extraction of penicillin G in a pilot plant Karr-column

Summary Penicillin G was extracted from a model medium with a secondary amine (Amberlite LA-2) as carrier in n-butylacetate as solvent in a 7.6 m high pilot plant Karr-column at different stroke frequencies, throughput of the phases, concentrations of Penicillin G and carrier and ratios of the throughputs of the aqueous and organic phases. Reactive extraction of penicillin G in a pilot plant Karr-column II. Fermentation broths

Summary Penicillin G was extracted from mycelfree fermentation broths by means of the carrier (Amberlite LA-2) in n-butylacetate at pH 5 in a 7.6 m high pilot plant Karr-column with degrees of extraction E=98–99% and penicillin enrichments up to 3. The reextraction was carried out with phosphate buffer at pH-values above 7.5 with degree of extractions E=86–88% and penicillin enrichments up to 3. The penicillin and carrier losses were negligible. The influence of the process variables on the extraction degree was investigated. The penicillin extraction of the model medium and the fermentation broths were compared. Behavioral responses of red hake,Urophycis chuss,to decreasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen

Synopsis Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine changes in behavior of red hake,Urophycis chuss, under decreasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO). Since the ecological requirements of this species change with age, responses were measured for three different groups: (1) age 0+, = 89 mm total length (TL); (2) age 1+, = 238 mm TL; and (3) age 2–3+, = 397 mm TL. As DO decreased from 8–10 mg l^-1 to < 0.5 mg l^-1, changes were evident in active time, water column activity, range of horizontal movement, food searching, and agonistic behavior. Age 0+ fish were most sensitive, moving up into the water column and swimming continuously as DO levels fell below 4.2 mg l^-1. Age 2–3+ fish were the least responsive, remaining on the substrate and increasing only their range of movement at concentrations below 3 mg l^-1. Responses of age 1 + fish were variable, possibly reflecting a transition stage between the younger and older fish. Common to all groups was the decrease and eventual cessation of food searching.     

Introduction of 5'-terminal functional groups into synthetic oligonucleotides for selective immobilization

Oligodeoxyribonucleotides terminating in a 5'-primary amine group are synthesized using solid-phase supported phosphoramidite chemistry. The 5'-terminal amine group in the deprotected oligomers is further derivatized with either succinic anhydride to give 5'-carboxylic acid or with dithiobis(succinimidylpropionate) followed by treatment with dithioerythritol to produce 5'-thiol-terminated oligonucleotides. The 5'-thiol-terminated oligonucleotides are selectively immobilized on solid supports containing either p-chloromercuribenzoate or 2,2'-dithiobis(5-nitropyridine) activated thiol groups.     

Glomerular ultrastructure of the trout,Salmo gairdneri: Effects of angiotensin II and adaptation to seawater

Summary The effect of angiotensin infusion on the glomerular ultrastructure of freshwater- and seawater-adapted rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, has been examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Adaptation of trout to seawater resulted in epithelial podocyte flattening, primary process broadening and apparent loss of foot processes in almost all glomeruli, features which were uncommon in freshwater-adapted trout. Similar changes were induced by infusion of freshwater-adapted animals with angiotensin, suggesting that the renin-angiotensin system plays a role in the modification of glomerular epithelial ultrastructure. Adaptation of trout to seawater also reduced glomerular diameter, but infusion of freshwater-adapted animals with angiotensin did not mirror this effect. Infusion of angiotensin into seawater-adapted animals increased the overall thickness of glomerular basement membrane by increasing the lamina rara interna and lamina densa. This did not occur when freshwater-adapted fish were either infused with angiotensin or adapted to seawater. These findings suggest that other humoral systems are involved in the control of glomerular diameter and basement membrane thickness as part of an integrated response to increased environmental salinity.
