The electrical conductivity (EC) of milk is mainly a function of the electrolyte concentration in the milk and therefore raised in mastitis. The present investigation was aimed at elaborating, if possible, a diagnostic model for screening purposes based on EC determinations and consistent with the diagnostic procedures and interpretations commonly used in laboratory milk diagnosis in the Nordic countries (Klastrup 1975). According to this diagnosis (here called reference diagnosis) cell numbers above 300,000/ml (cell count or the corresponding CMT-score) in foremilk quarter samples during the main part of the lactation period and significantly above the lowest value on within-udder comparison during late lactation are considered indicative of mastitis and bacteriological examinations are made when called for.  相似文献

The erythrocytes of multiple sclerosis patients with elevated superoxide dismutase levels were tested for the activities of glutathione redox cycle enzymes. No differences were observed between multiple sclerosis and normal control erythrocytes when the activities were referred to either hemoglobin concentration or lactate dehydrogenase content. Our results indicate that no adaptative changes occur in the activities of glutathione redox cycle enzymes in erythrocytes of multiple sclerosis subjects as a consequence of an elevated superoxide dismutase level.  相似文献

Zea mays (maize) genotypes B73, Mo17 and LH38 were evaluated for their capacity to undergo somatic embryogenesis. Over 1500 immature embryos (ie's) of B73, 2900 ie's of LH38 and 400 ie's of Mo17 were excised 10–17 days after pollination and plated on six different media. Overall response, reported as a percentage of the ie's plated that developed embryogenic callus, was 2.1%, 1.6% and 26% for LH38, B73 and Mo17, respectively. Best response on a given medium for each of these genotypes was 9.2% (LH38), 4.4% (B73) and 100% (Mo17). Other parameters examined for their effects on production of embryogenic callus included self vs. sib pollination, ear ranking (1st, 2nd or 3rd ear), and temperature shock, all of which had no significant effect. In the infection of Escherichia coli B(P1) with restricted T1, it was shown that yielder cells consist of both special and nonspecial cells. Special or predetermined yielders occurred only among the earliest yielders. In most instances, yielder-cell formation was most easily explained by assuming that the first step was a chance escape of the restricted phage DNA from the degrading enzyme of the restricting cell.  相似文献

Physella heterostropha size distributions and densities were measured in Pen Branch delta, a thermally altered swamp of the Savannah River, South Carolina. During cessation of thermal input, measurements were taken in a highly impacted area and more natural area. Of the three substrates sampled, logs, small woody material and benthos, snail density was highest on small pieces of submerged wood and < 20% of the snails on logs were out of the water. Following resumption of thermal input, snail density was four times higher on logs than previously measured. Snails responded to elevated water temperatures by congregating in a narrow band slightly above the water. Snail size did not appear to affect their response. However, the thermal history of the snails influenced their behaviour and survival rates. Logs may be a potential refuge for snails when water temperature are greater greater than 38°C. However, our results indicate that long-term survival in this manner may be impossible.  相似文献

Alterations affecting the epidermal growth factor/transforming growth factor alpha-responsive mitogenic pathway are frequently detected in malignancies. In particular, the epidermal growth factor receptor has been found overexpressed in a number of human tumors. Production and secretion of transforming growth factor type alpha has also been shown in several tumor cells but not in their normal counterparts. In this review we describe the establishment of in vitro model systems to study the transforming potential of these molecules and summarize our current understanding of the mechanisms involved in transformation by genes encoding a growth factor and a growth factor receptor.  相似文献

A new mutation inEscherichia coli K12,isfA, is described, which causes inhibition of SOS functions. The mutation, discovered in a ΔpolA + mutant, is responsible for inhibition of several phenomena related to the SOS response inpolA + strains: UV- and methyl methanesulfonate-induced mutagenesis, resumption of DNA replication in UV-irradiated cells, cell filamentation, prophage induction and increase in UV sensitivity. TheisfA mutation also significantly reduces UV-induced expression of β-galactosidase fromrecA::lacZ andumuC′::lacZ fusions. The results suggest that theisfA gene product may affect RecA* coprotease activity and may be involved in the regulation of the termination of the SOS response after completion of DNA repair. TheisfA mutation was localized at 85 min on theE. coli chromosome, and preliminary experiments suggest that it may be dominant to the wild-type allele.  相似文献
