Anti-Candida activity of four antifungal benzothiazoles

Abstract Anti- Candida activity of 6-amino-2- n -pentylthiobenzothiazole (I), benzylester of (6-amino-2-benzothiazolylthio)acetic acid (II) and of 3-butylthio-(1,2,4-triazolo)-2,3-benzothiazole (III) was followed and compared to that of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (IV). I and II exhibited good activity against the C. albicans yeast form, similar to IV. They were inhibitorily active against other Candida strains, IC₅₀ values being of the order of 10⁻⁵ M, which means better activity than IV. Compound I also exhibited inhibitory activity on germ-tube formation and mycelial growth in the C. albicans strains, while II, III and IV were not active in these tests. III was the least active form of the compounds tested, IC₅₀ values being of the order of 10⁻⁴ M. All the compounds tested were highly active on a nystatin-resistant C. albicans mutant, with IC₅₀s of the order of 10⁻⁶ M−10⁻⁵ M.     

Lathyrus nissolia subsp.futakii subsp. nova in der Tschechoslowakei

A new subspecies,Lathyrus nissolia L. subsp.futakii Chrtková subsp. nova is described from East Slovakia. The diacritical characters are: high and rich branched stems, 50–110 cm long and larger, 10–12 mm long, bright orange-red flowers. It differs also in ecology, growing in wet lowland forests with the level of the ground water up to 15 cm over the earth also in summer.     

Selected chromosome counts of the Czechoslovak flora III

(2n=32) and inTithymalus salicifolius (Host) Klotzch etGarcke (2n=40). Known but less frequent cytotypes are reported inLinum flavum L. subsp.flavum (2n=28) and inVerbascum speciosum Schrad. subsp.speciosum (2n=30).     

The vitelline envelope,chorion, and micropyle of Fundulus heteroclitus eggs

The architecture and transformation of the vitelline envelope of the developing oocyte into the chorion of the mature egg of Fundulus heteroclitus have been examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The mature vitelline envelope is structurally complex and consists of about nine strata. The envelope is penetrated by pore canals that contain microvilli arising from the oocyte and macrovilli from follicle cells. During the envelope's transformation into the chorion, the pore canals are lost and the envelope becomes more fibrous and compact and its stratified nature less apparent. The micropyle, of pore, through which the sperm gains access to the enclosed egg is located at the bottom of a small funnel-shaped depression in the envelope. Internally, the micropyle opens on the apex of a cone-like elevation of the chorion. During the development of the envelope, structured chorionic fibrils, the components of which are presumed to be synthesized by the follicle cells, become attached to its surface. These chorionic fibrils are though to aid in the attachment of the egg to the substratum and perhaps to help prevent water loss during low tides when the egg may be exposed.     

High resolution two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of the proteins and glycoproteins of human blood platelets and platelet membranes

The proteins and glycoproteins of human blood platelets and platelet membranes in both the reduced and the unreduced states have been analysed by isoelectric focusing and sodium dodecyl sulphate-discontinuous polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in a two-dimensional technique. Gels which had been stained with periodic acid-Schiff's reagent could be counter-stained with Coomassie Brilliant Blue, simplifying the recognition of components which stain with both reagents. The major glycoproteins and some of the proteins have been identified and the characteristics of the membrane and of the whole platelet components established in this system.     

Uptake of immune RNA by normal mouse spleen cells

Summary Normal mouse spleen cells take up in vitro radioactively labeled immune RNA. RNA taken up is present in nuclei, polysomes, membranes and cytoplasm. About 20–40% of immune RNA is nonspecifically associated with cell surface. 45% of RNA taken up is degraded and reutilized inside the cells within 2 hours.This work was supported by the Polish Academy of Sciences within the project 09.7.4.1.1.     

Mortality in Grey seal pups: incidence and causes

Pup production and mortality of beach breeding Grey seals was studied at two contrasting types of rookery, the cliff-bound island of Ramsey, Dyfed, and the low, grassy island of Auskerry, Orkney. Thirty-five per cent of pups died on Ramsey compared with 14 % on Auskerry. Almost half of the Ramsey mortality was accounted for by animals being lost from the beaches so that they were not available for analysis. The main proximate causes of death revealed by post-mortem examination were starvation and infections. The other conditions which accounted for a small proportion of deaths were drowning, trauma, non-viability, stillbirths, atelectasis, dystokia and heart abnormality. Certain pathogens associated with disease were common to both sites, while others were specific to Ramsey or Auskerry.
The most important ultimate cause of pup deaths appeared to be failure of the mother/pup bond. The differences in levels of mortality between the sites is thought to be due to differences in the topography of the beaches. Pup survival on the narrow cliff-bound beaches, or in caves, on Ramsey was reduced either directly through pups being washed off, or indirectly by overcrowding of animals at high tide.     

Solubilization of microsomal phosphoethanolaminetransferase by octyl glucoside

Phosphoethanolaminetransferase of high specific activity was solubilized from rat liver microsomes with the non-ionic detergent octyl glucoside. The solubilization method is fast and simple, allowing for processing of large amounts of material. The solubilized enzyme is stable. It contains virtually no phosphocholinetransferase activity. A preliminary characterization of the enzyme, with both diacyl- and alkylacyl-glycerol as substrate, is given. For the reaction, the lipid substrates were incorporated into artificial phospholipid bilayers (liposomes).
