Heterogeneity in riverine habitats acts as a template for species evolution that influences river communities at different spatio‐temporal scales. Although birds are conspicuous elements of these communities, the roles of phylogeny, functional traits, and habitat character in their niche use or species'' assembly have seldom been investigated. We explored these themes by surveying multiple headwaters over 3000 m of elevation in the Himalayan Mountains of India where the specialist birds of montane rivers reach their greatest diversity on Earth. After ordinating community composition, species traits, and habitat character, we investigated whether river bird traits varied with elevation in ways that were constrained or independent of phylogeny, hypothesizing that trait patterns reflect environmental filtering. Community composition and trait representation varied strongly with increasing elevation and river naturalness as species that foraged in the river/riparian ecotone gave way to small insectivores with direct trophic dependence on the river or its immediate channel. These trends were influenced strongly by phylogeny as communities became more clustered by functional traits at a higher elevation. Phylogenetic signals varied among traits, however, and were reflected in body mass, bill size, and tarsus length more than in body size, tail length, and breeding strategy. These variations imply that community assembly in high‐altitude river birds reflects a blend of phylogenetic constraint and habitat filtering coupled with some proximate niche‐based moulding of trait character. We suggest that the regional co‐existence of river birds in the Himalaya is facilitated by this same array of factors that together reflect the highly heterogeneous template of river habitats provided by these mountain headwaters.  相似文献

Microorganisms have the tendency to accumulate at interfaces through the release of extracellular polymeric substances to form aggregates such as films or flocs. This physical association leads to different modes of interactions among cells and the subsequent development of functionally and metabolically diverse consortia. Aggregation of cells in aqueous suspensions often results in the formation of flocs, which are hotspots of enhanced microbial processes. This has important implications for the dynamics of organic and inorganic matter in varied ecosystems. These microbial flocs are not only important components in nutrient turnover, decomposition, and sinking flux but also facilitate contaminant removal and treatment of wastewater and biomass harvesting. Greater insight into the multitude of interactions between microorganisms in flocs would be useful to enhance the efficiency of bioflocculation processes. This review covers the fundamental aspects and outlines the role of bioflocculation in controlled industrial processes and in nature.  相似文献

Dispersion enables the transition from the biofilm to the planktonic growth state in response to various cues. While several Pseudomonas aeruginosa proteins, including BdlA and the c‐di‐GMP phosphodiesterases DipA, RbdA, and NbdA, have been shown to be required for dispersion to occur, little is known about dispersion cue sensing and the signalling translating these cues into the modulation c‐di‐GMP levels to enable dispersion. Using glutamate‐induced dispersion as a model, we report that dispersion‐inducing nutrient cues are sensed via an outside‐in signalling mechanism by the diguanylate cyclase NicD belonging to a family of seven transmembrane (7TM) receptors. NicD directly interacts with BdlA and the phosphodiesterase DipA, with NicD, BdlA, and DipA being part of the same pathway required for dispersion. Glutamate sensing by NicD results in NicD dephosphorylation and increased cyclase activity. Active NicD contributes to the non‐processive proteolysis and activation of BdlA via phosphorylation and temporarily elevated c‐di‐GMP levels. BdlA, in turn, activates DipA, resulting in the overall reduction of c‐di‐GMP levels. Our results provide a basis for understanding the signalling mechanism based on NicD to induce biofilm dispersion that may be applicable to various biofilm‐forming species and may have implications for the control of biofilm‐related infections.  相似文献

Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat (CRISPR) in association with CRISPR-associated (Cas) proteins constitutes a formidable defense system against mobile genetic elements in prokaryotes. In type I-C, the ribonucleoprotein surveillance complex comprises only three Cas proteins, namely, Cas5d, Csd1 and Csd2. Unlike type I-E that uses Cse3/CasE for metal-independent CRISPR RNA maturation, type I-C that lacks this deputes Cas5d to process the pre-crRNA. Here, we report the promiscuous DNase activity of Cas5d in presence of divalent metals. Remarkably, the active site that renders RNA hydrolysis may be tuned by metal to act on DNA substrates too. Further, the realization that Csd1 is a fusion of its functional homolog Cse1/CasA and Cse2/CasB forecasts that the stoichiometry of the constituents of the surveillance complex in type I-C may differ from type I-E. Although Csd2 seems to be inert, Csd1 too exhibits RNase and metal-dependent DNase activity. Thus, in addition to their proposed functions, the DNase activity of Cas5d and Csd1 may also enable them to be co-opted in adaptation and interference stages of CRISPR immunity wherein interaction with DNA substrates is involved.  相似文献

Nuclease susceptibility of the satellite DNA-containing chromatin of the liver of young (18 ± 2 weeks) and old (100 ± 5 weeks) rats was analysed using nick-translated rat 185 bp satellite I DNA fragment cloned in pBR322. With increasing concentration of DNaseI and micrococcal nuclease (MNase), multimeric forms of the satellite ladder gradually disappear in both the ages. The rate of disappearance is faster in young rats as compared to old ones. Such age-dependent decrease in the susceptibility of satellite DNA-containing chromatin reflects its condensation towards heterochromatization in old age.  相似文献

Various functionalized mono- and diarylanthranilo-1,3-dinitriles were synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro antihyperglycemic activity against the PTP-1B, glucose-6-phosphatase, glycogen phosphorylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. Among various screened compounds, 5,6-diaryl substituted anthranilo-1,3-dinitriles 3a, 3b, and 3d showed good inhibitory activity against PTP-1B with IC50 values of 58–72 μM. Three of the test compounds showed significant (25–37%) lowering of plasma glucose level at 24 h in sucrose-challenged streptozotocin-induced diabetic Sprague–Dawley rat model.  相似文献

Costus speciosus is a rich source of commercially important compound Diosgenin, distributed in different regions of India. The present investigation was aimed to quantify diosgenin through High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography in 34 germplasms of Costus speciosus and also to identify the superior sources and to correlate the macronutrients of rhizospheric soil. The starch content varied in microscopic examination and correlated inversely (r=−0.266) with diosgenin content. Findings revealed that the extraction process with acid hydrolysis yielded higher diosgenin content (0.15–1.88 %) as compared to non-hydrolysis (0.009–0.368 %) procedure. Germplasms from Uttar Pradesh (NBCS-4), Jharkhand (NBCS-39) and Bihar (NBCS-2) were identified as elite chemotypes based on hierarchical clustering analysis. The phosphorous content of respective rhizospheric soil correlated positively (r=0.742) with diosgenin content. Findings of present study are useful to identify the new agrotechniques. The elite germplasms can also be used as quality planting material for large scale cultivation in order to assure a sustained supply to the herbal drug industry.  相似文献
