For almost four decades, the chiral fungicides metalaxyl and furalaxyl have been in use in plant protection on a global scale. Both substances are distributed as racemic mixtures, yet the desirable interference in nucleic acid synthesis of harmful fungi only occurs by the (‐)‐R‐enantiomer. As enantioselective degradation in Scheyern (Germany) and Yaoundé (Cameroon) soils has been documented, the influence of 50 isolated microorganisms on the R/S ratio was investigated. A high‐pressure liquid chromatography method with a chiral column to separate enantiomers of metalaxyl and furalaxyl, and subsequent detection by tandem mass spectrometry, was employed. Only one of these microorganisms, a strain of Brevibacillus brevis, showed an enantioselective degradation pattern in liquid culture; the respective (‐)‐R‐enantiomers were preferably degraded. Breeding ground food availability is critical to the survival and productivity of adult birds. The common cuckoo Cuculus canorus is a brood-parasitic Afro-Palearctic migrant bird exhibiting long-term (breeding) population declines in many European countries. Variation in population trend between regions and habitats suggests breeding ground drivers such as adult food supply. However, cuckoo diet has not been studied in detail since before the most significant population declines in Europe began in the mid-1980s. 20th century studies of cuckoo diet largely comprised field observations likely to carry bias towards larger prey taxa. Here we demonstrate the potential value of 1) using high-throughput DNA sequencing of invertebrate prey in faeces to determine cuckoo diet with minimal bias towards large prey taxa, and 2) using crowd-sourced digital photographs from across Britain to identify lepidopteran cuckoo prey taxa during recent years post-decline (2005–2016). DNA analysis found a high frequency of Lepidoptera, including moths of family Lasiocampidae, prominent within the past literature, but also grasshoppers (Orthoptera) and flies (Diptera) that may be overlooked by field observation methodologies. The range of larval lepidopteran prey identified from photographs largely agreed with those previously documented, with potential signs of reduced diversity, and identities of key adult prey taxa were supported by molecular results. Notably, many identified cuckoo prey taxa have shown severe declines due to agricultural intensification, suggesting this has driven spatial patterns of cuckoo loss. Landscape-scale, lowland rewilding interventions provide opportunities to understand the scale of reversal of previous agricultural intensification that may be necessary to restore prey populations sufficiently to permit recolonization by cuckoos.  相似文献

Recent studies have reported the formation of Cu0 nanoparticles (CuNP) by suspended bacteria in pore water of periodically flooded soils, but the bacteria have not yet been identified. The aim of this study was to identify the CuNP-forming bacteria and to determine the location of CuNP formation relative to the bacterial cell surface. Electron microscopy revealed that the bacteria were rod-shaped spore formers and suggested that CuNP were formed in the periplasm. Combined results from denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, 16S rRNA gene clone libraries, and classic microbiological cultivation techniques provided strong evidence for a Clostridium sp. strain as the CuNP-forming bacteria. Clostridia are well-adapted to frequent flooding and drying due to their ability to form spores and may play an important role in Cu cycling and metallic Cu formation in redox-dynamic environments.  相似文献

The success of breeding programs is limited by the sparse knowledge about endocrine regulation and biochemical reactions in the psittacine male tract. The immunocytochemical analysis of parrots' testicular tissues provides an insight into their reproductive system but is often hampered by the lack of reliable antibodies. In the present study, we tested a large panel of antibodies raised against steroid receptors, steroidogenic enzymes, relaxin peptides including their receptors, and proliferation markers on paraffin sections of testicular tissue from eight psittacine genera representing three continents. All investigated species displayed the tested markers in somatic and germ cells of testis and epididymis, even though cell distribution was partly heterogenous and in species-specific patterns. The 17β-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase-2, 3β-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase, and smooth muscle actin allowed the cross-species differentiation between active and nonactive gonads. The remaining steroidogenic enzymes, steroid receptors, relaxin peptides, and Ki67 proved to be suitable to define reproductive activity depending on the parrot species. Adapting immunocytochemical methods to different psittacines was successful, though various cellular expression patterns do not allow the transfer of results among different parrot species. However, the availability of a reliable repertory of sexual markers is important to examine reproductive biology of psittacine birds.  相似文献

Hunting is often either portrayed as the ultimate means to enact a close connection between the human being and nature, or investigated in terms of its contribution to livelihoods. Through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, we explored the meaning of hunting in the lower Omo valley, Ethiopia, and found that large game hunting was best understood as an activity that served to establish and maintain human–human relationships. Hunting was important as it created the basis for long-term bond-relations between a hunter and his friend (‘misso’) and a hunter and his honorary elder sister (‘misha’) that could be drawn on in times of hardship. By contrast, interactions between hunter and wildlife were given hardly any attention by our participants. We discuss implications in relation to the stark decline in wildlife and the degradation of grazing land over the last decades, and the consequences of our findings for conservation and development activities.  相似文献
