There is a growing interest in the use of bioinoculants to assist mineral fertilizers in improving crop production and yield. Azotobacter and Pseudomonas are two agriculturally relevant strains of bacteria which have been established as efficient bioinoculants. An experiment involving addition of graded concentrations of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles was undertaken using log phase cultures of Azotobacter and Pseudomonas. Growth kinetics revealed a clear trend of gradual decrease with Pseudomonas; however, Azotobacter exhibited a twofold enhancement in growth with increase in the concentration of ZnO concentration. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), supported by energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses, illustrated the significant effect of ZnO nanoparticles on Azotobacter by the enhancement in the abundance of globular biofilm-like structures and the intracellular presence of ZnO, with the increase in its concentration. It can be surmised that extracellular mucilage production in Azotobacter may be providing a barrier to the nanoparticles. Further experiments with Azotobacter by inoculation of wheat and tomato seeds with ZnO nanoparticles alone or bacteria grown on ZnO-infused growth medium revealed interesting results. Vigour index of wheat seeds reduced by 40–50% in the presence of different concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles alone, which was alleviated by 15–20%, when ZnO and Azotobacter were present together. However, a drastic 50–60% decrease in vigour indices of tomato seeds was recorded, irrespective of Azotobacter inoculation. 相似文献

In this work, we have overexpressed a vesicle trafficking protein, Rab7, from a stress-tolerant plant, Pennisetum glaucum, in a high-yielding but stress-sensitive rice variety Pusa Basmati-1 (PB-1). The transgenic rice plants were tested for tolerance against salinity and drought stress. The transgenic plants showed considerable tolerance at the vegetative stage against both salinity (200 mM NaCl) and drought stress (up to 12 days after withdrawing water). The protection against salt and drought stress may be by regulating Na+ ion homeostasis, as the transgenic plants showed altered expression of multiple transporter genes, including OsNHX1, OsNHX2, OsSOS1, OsVHA, and OsGLRs. In addition, decreased generation and maintenance of lesser reactive oxygen species (ROS), with maintenance of chloroplast grana and photosynthetic machinery was observed. When evaluated for reproductive growth, 89–96 % of seed setting was maintained in transgenic plants during drought stress; however, under salt stress, a 33–53 % decrease in seed setting was observed. These results indicate that PgRab7 overexpression in rice confers differential tolerance at the seed setting stage during salinity and drought stress and could be a favored target for raising drought-tolerant crops. 相似文献

Gabon hosts nesting grounds for several sea turtle species, including the world’s largest rookery for the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), Africa’s largest rookery for the olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) and smaller aggregations of the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas). To assess the level of incidental captures of turtles by the Gabonese trawl fishery, an onboard observer program was conducted in the period 2012–2013. A total of 143 turtles were captured by 15 trawlers during 271 fishing days. The olive ridley turtle was the main species captured (80% of bycaught turtles), with mostly adult-sized individuals. The remaining 20% included green turtles, hawksbill turtles, leatherback turtles and undetermined species. Bycatch per unit of effort (BPUE) of olive ridley turtles varied greatly depending on the period of the year (range of means: 0.261–2.270). Dead and comatose turtles were 6.2 and 24.6% respectively (n = 65). By applying the available fishing effort to two BPUE scenarios (excluding or considering a seasonal peak), the total annual number of captures was estimated as ranging between 1026 (CI 95% 746–1343) and 2581 (CI 95% 1641–3788) olive ridley turtles, with a mortality ranging from 63 (CI 95% 13–135) to 794 (CI 95% 415–1282) turtles per year depending on the scenario and on the fate of comatose turtles. Such a potential mortality may be reason for concern for the local breeding population of olive ridley turtles and recommendations in terms of possible conservation measures and further research are given. 相似文献

New 2,3,4,5-tetra substituted dihydrooxazoles derivatives were efficiently synthesized starting from benzaldehyde, aryl thiosemicarbazide and benzoin using designed synthetic route. Newly synthesized 2,3,4,5-tetra substituted dihydrooxazole derivatives were screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against different strains of pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) were determined for the test compounds using positive and negative control. Compounds 4b, 4d, 4f, 4i, 4k and 4m, have shown good antibacterial activity whereas compounds 4e, 4g, 4h, 4j, 4l and 4n have displayed better antifungal activity. 相似文献

Improving the electrochemical performance of both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been of great interest in emerging renewable energy technologies. This study reports an advanced bifunctional hybrid electrocatalyst for both ORR and OER, which is composed of tungsten disulphide (WS2) and carbon nanotube (CNT) connected via tungsten carbide (WC) bonding. WS2 sheets on the surface of CNTs provide catalytic active sites for electrocatalytic activity while the CNTs act as conduction channels and provide a large surface area. Moreover, the newly formed WC crystalline structure provides an easy path for electron transfer by spin coupling and helps to solve stability issues to enable excellent electrocatalytic activity. In addition, it is found that four to five layers of WS2 sheets on the surface of CNTs produce excellent catalytic activity toward both ORR and OER, which is comparable to noble metals (Pt, RuO2, etc.). These findings show the many advantages enabled by designing highly active, durable, and cost‐effective ORR and OER electrocatalysts. 相似文献

Oxalates stimulate alterations in renal epithelial cells and thereby induce calcium oxalate (CaOx) stone formation. Bacillus subtilis YvrK gene encodes for oxalate decarboxylase (OxdC) which degrades oxalate to formate and CO2. The present work is aimed to clone the oxdC gene in a mammalian expression vector pcDNA and transfect into Human Embryonic Kidney 293 (HEK293) cells and evaluate the oxdC expression, cell survival rate and oxalate degrading efficiency. The results indicate cell survival rate of HEK293/pcDNAOXDC cells pre-incubated with oxalate was enhanced by 28%. HEK293/pcDNAOXDC cells expressing OxdC treated with oxalate, significantly restored antioxidant activity, mitochondrial membrane potential and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation compared with HEK293/pcDNA. Apoptotic marker caspase 3 downregulation illustrates HEK293/pcDNAOXDC cells were able to survive under oxalate-mediated oxidative stress. The findings suggest HEK293 cells expressing oxdC capable of degrading oxalate protect cells from oxidative damage and thus serve as a therapeutic option for prevention of CaOx stone disease.

The human eye is an important target for infection with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). Damage to cells forming the trabeculum of the eye by HSV-1 infection could contribute to the development of glaucoma, a major blinding disease. Primary cultures of human trabecular meshwork cells were used as an in vitro model to demonstrate the ability of HSV-1 to enter into and establish a productive infection of the trabeculum. Summary Eight isolates of ectomycorrhizal fungi namely, Laccaria fraterna (EM-1083),Laccaria laccata (EM-1191), Pisolithus tinctorius (EM-1081),Pisolithus tinctorius (EM-1293), Scleroderma cepa (EM-1233),Scleroderma flavidum (EM-1235),Scleroderma verucosum, (EM-1283) and Hysterangium incarceratum (EM-1185) were grown on specially designed cocktail media prepared by adding various concentrations of different heavy metals namely Al, As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb. The heavy metals were selected keeping in view their relative abundance in coal ash and potential toxicity. The fungal isolates were grown on such designed cocktail media. The colony diameter was used for the measurement of the fungal growth. Total heavy metal accumulated in the mycelia was assayed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.In relation to metal tolerance ability in general,Hysterangium incarceratum (EM-1185) showed maximum tolerance with respect to growth, Laccaria fraterna (EM-1083) and Pisolithus tinctorius (EM-1293) also showed considerable tolerance to the heavy metals tested. In relation to metal uptake in particular, Pisolithus tinctorius (EM-1293), has reported maximum uptake of Al (34642.58 ppm), Cd (302.12 ppm) and Pb (3501.96 ppm). In Laccaria fraterna (EM-1083), As (130.57 ppm) and Cr (402.38 ppm) uptake was recorded maximum; and Hysterangium incarceratum (EM-1185) has recorded maximum Ni (2648.59 ppm) uptake among the three suitable isolates documented here. 相似文献

An efficient, high yield and one-pot synthesis of phenyl cyclopropyl methanones by reaction of different aryl alcohols with 4'-fluoro-4-chloro-butyrophenone in THF/DMF in the presence of NaH/TBAB is reported. Most of the methanones were further reduced to respective alcohols or methylenes. All the compounds were evaluated for their anti-tubercular activities against M. tuberculosis H37Rv in vitro displaying MICs ranging from 25 to 3.125 microg/mL. The most active compounds showed activity against MDR strains and two of them (14 and 16) showed marginal enhancement of MST in mice. 相似文献
