Grid computing systems are emerging as a computing infrastructure that will enable the use of wide-area network computing systems for a variety of challenging applications. One of these is the ever increasing demand for multimedia from users engaging in a wide range of activities such as scientific research, education, commerce, and entertainment. To provide an adequate level of service to multimedia applications, it is often necessary to simultaneously allocate resources including predetermined capacities from interconnecting networks to the applications. The simultaneous allocation of resources is often referred to as co-allocation in the Grid literature. In this paper, we formally define the co-allocation problem and propose a novel scheme called synchronous queuing (SQ) for implementing co-allocation with quality of service (QoS) assurances in Grids. Unlike existing approaches, SQ does not require advance reservation capabilities at the resources. This enables an SQ-based approach to over subscribe the resources and hence improve resource utilization. The simulation studies performed to evaluate SQ indicate that it outperforms an QoS-based scheme with strict admission control by a significant margin. 相似文献

BackgroundThe global epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) renders its prevention a major public health priority. A key risk factor of diabetes is obesity and poor diets. Food environments have been found to influence people’s diets and obesity, positing they may play a role in the prevalence of diabetes. Yet, there is scant evidence on the role they may play in the context of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We examined the associations of food environments on T2DM among adults and its heterogeneity by income and sex.Methods and findingsWe linked individual health outcome data of 12,167 individuals from a network of health surveillance sites (the South Asia Biobank) to the density and proximity of food outlets geolocated around their homes from environment mapping survey data collected between 2018 and 2020 in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Density was defined as share of food outlets within 300 m from study participant’s home, and proximity was defined as having at least 1 outlet within 100 m from home. The outcome variables include fasting blood glucose level, high blood glucose, and self-reported diagnosed diabetes. Control variables included demographics, socioeconomic status (SES), health status, healthcare utilization, and physical activities. Data were analyzed in ArcMap 10.3 and STATA 15.1. A higher share of fast-food restaurants (FFR) was associated with a 9.21 mg/dl blood glucose increase (95% CI: 0.17, 18.24; p < 0.05). Having at least 1 FFR in the proximity was associated with 2.14 mg/dl blood glucose increase (CI: 0.55, 3.72; p < 0.01). A 1% increase in the share of FFR near an individual’s home was associated with 8% increase in the probability of being clinically diagnosed as a diabetic (average marginal effects (AMEs): 0.08; CI: 0.02, 0.14; p < 0.05). Having at least 1 FFR near home was associated with 16% (odds ratio [OR]: 1.16; CI: 1.01, 1.33; p < 0.05) and 19% (OR: 1.19; CI: 1.03, 1.38; p < 0.05) increases in the odds of higher blood glucose levels and diagnosed diabetes, respectively. The positive association between FFR density and blood glucose level was stronger among women than men, but the association between FFR proximity and blood glucose level was stronger among men as well as among those with higher incomes. One of the study’s key limitations is that we measured exposure to food environments around residency geolocation; however, participants may source their meals elsewhere.ConclusionsOur results suggest that the exposure to fast-food outlets may have a detrimental impact on the risk of T2DM, especially among females and higher-income earners. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) shed from primary and metastatic cancers are admixed with blood components and are thus rare, making their isolation and characterization a major technological challenge. CTCs hold the key to understanding the biology of metastasis and provide a biomarker to noninvasively measure the evolution of tumor genotypes during treatment and disease progression. Cyanophycin (multi-L-arginyl-poly-L-aspartic acid) is a nitrogen storage polymer found in most cyanobacteria and some heterotrophic bacteria. The cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 accumulates cyanophycin following a transition from nitrogen-limited to nitrogen-excess conditions. Here we show that the accumulation of cyanophycin depends on the activation of the key enzyme of arginine biosynthesis, N-acetyl-L-glutamate kinase, by signal transduction protein PII. 相似文献

The mechanism of distribution of absorbed excitation energy between the two photosystems in the presence of nitrite has been investigated in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) thylakoid membranes. Nitrite inhibited PS II activity (H(2)O --> DCPIP reaction) and enhanced PS I activity (DCPIPH(2) --> MV reaction). Nitrite decreased the F(v)/F(m) ratio measured at room temperature and increased the F(730)/F(685) ratio measured at low temperature (77 K). These results suggested that nitrite caused a decrease in the excitation energy available to PS II and transferred more energy to PS I by the mechanism of state transition. Measurement of fluorescence excitation spectra at 77 K showed that nitrite increased the absorption cross-section of PS I antenna at the expense of chlorophyll b and LHC II. Children typically experience more mild symptoms of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) when compared to adults. There is a strong body of evidence that children are also less susceptible to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection with the ancestral viral isolate. However, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) has been associated with an increased number of pediatric infections. Whether this is the result of widespread adult vaccination or fundamental changes in the biology of SARS-CoV-2 remain to be determined. Here, we use primary nasal epithelial cells (NECs) from children and adults, differentiated at an air–liquid interface to show that the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 replicates to significantly lower titers in the NECs of children compared to those of adults. This was associated with a heightened antiviral response to SARS-CoV-2 in the NECs of children. Importantly, the Delta variant also replicated to significantly lower titers in the NECs of children. This trend was markedly less pronounced in the case of Omicron. It is also striking to note that, at least in terms of viral RNA, Omicron replicated better in pediatric NECs compared to both Delta and the ancestral virus. Taken together, these data show that the nasal epithelium of children supports lower infection and replication of ancestral SARS-CoV-2, although this may be changing as the virus evolves.Children typically experience more mild symptoms of COVID-19 when compared to adults; why is this? The aim of this educational review is to provide practical information on the hardware, methodology, and the hands on application of chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence technology. We present the paper in a question and answer format like frequently asked questions. Although nearly all information on the application of Chl a fluorescence can be found in the literature, it is not always easily accessible. This paper is primarily aimed at scientists who have some experience with the application of Chl a fluorescence but are still in the process of discovering what it all means and how it can be used. Topics discussed are (among other things) the kind of information that can be obtained using different fluorescence techniques, the interpretation of Chl a fluorescence signals, specific applications of these techniques, and practical advice on different subjects, such as on the length of dark adaptation before measurement of the Chl a fluorescence transient. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major cause of nosocomial infections and contributes to higher mortality in hospitalized individuals. Infection by P. aeruginosa triggers host immune response through activation of pathogen recognition receptors, which are present in innate cells. Several studies have reported the mechanism of P. aeruginosa induced innate immunity in multiple cell types. But so far there is no reports on response of megakaryocytes to P. aeruginosa infection. Hence, our aim was to investigate the precise role and signaling mechanism of megakaryocytes during P. aeruginosa infection. In this study, we used Mo7e cells as representatives of human megakaryocyte and found that P. aeruginosa infection induces cytotoxicity in these cells. We further demonstrated that P. aeruginosa infection modulates p38 and extracellular signal regulated kinase pathways in Mo7e cells. Protein expression profiling in P. aeruginosa lipopolysaccharide‐treated Mo7e cells revealed upregulation of importin subunit β and downregulation of metabolic enzymes. Our results suggest that P. aeruginosa infection regulates mitogen‐activated protein kinases signaling pathway and importin in Mo7e cells and that this is a potential mechanism for nuclear translocation of nuclear factor binding near the κ light‐chain gene in B cells and c‐Jun N‐terminal kinases to induce cell cytotoxicity. 相似文献
