Plants are sessile organisms forced to adjust to their surrounding environment. In a single plant the photoautotrophic shoot is exposed to pronounced environmental variations recurring in a day-night 24?h (diel) cycle, whereas the heterotrophic root grows in a temporally less fluctuating environment. The contrasting habitats of shoots and roots are reflected in different diel growth patterns and their responsiveness to environmental stimuli. Differences between diel leaf growth patterns of mono- and dicotyledonous plants correspond to their different organization and placement of growth zones. In monocots, heterotrophic growth zones are organized linearly and protected from the environment by sheaths of older leaves. In contrast, photosynthetically active growth zones of dicot leaves are exposed directly to the environment and show characteristic, species-specific diel growth patterns. It is hypothesized that the different exposure to environmental constraints and simultaneously the sink/source status of the growing organs may have induced distinct endogenous control of diel growth patterns in roots and leaves of monocot and dicot plants. Confronted by strong temporal fluctuations in environment, the circadian clock may facilitate robust intrinsic control of leaf growth in dicot plants.  相似文献

The life cycle of Photosystem II (PSII) is embedded in a network of proteins that guides the complex through biogenesis, damage and repair. Some of these proteins, such as Psb27 and Psb28, are involved in cofactor assembly for which they are only transiently bound to the preassembled complex. In this work we isolated and analyzed PSII from a ΔpsbJ mutant of the thermophilic cyanobacterium Thermosynechococcus elongatus. From the four different PSII complexes that could be separated the most prominent one revealed a monomeric Psb27–Psb28 PSII complex with greatly diminished oxygen-evolving activity. The MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry analysis of intact low molecular weight subunits (< 10 kDa) depicted wild type PSII with the absence of PsbJ. Relative quantification of the PsbA1/PsbA3 ratio by LC-ESI mass spectrometry using 15N labeled PsbA3-specific peptides indicated the complete replacement of PsbA1 by the stress copy PsbA3 in the mutant, even under standard growth conditions (50 μmol photons m? 2 s? 1). Purification and separation of proteins play a major role in biotechnology. Nowadays, alternatives to multistep operations suffering from low product yields and high costs are investigated closely amidst which one of the promising options is foam fractionation. The molecular behavior at the gas-liquid interface plays an important role in the formation and stabilization of enriched foam. This study for the first time correlates the physico-chemical parameters to the molecular structure in view of protein enrichment during foam fractionation of the two relatively different proteins lysozyme and β-casein employing biophysical techniques such as circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). In case of lysozyme, high enrichment was achieved at pH相似文献

Background and aims

Year of release of a cultivar reflects the agricultural and breeding practices of its time; we hypothesize that there are differences in mycorrhizal responsiveness of new high yielding and old crop plants and landraces. We evaluated the importance of the year of release on mycorrhizal responsiveness, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal root colonization and P efficiency. We also analyzed the effect of experimental treatments, P efficiency (P acquisition and P utilization efficiency) and AM fungal root colonization on a potential mycorrhizal responsiveness trend for year of release.

Methods

We conducted a meta-analysis on 39 publications working on 320 different crop plant genotypes.

Results

New cultivars were less intensely colonized but were more mycorrhiza-responsive (and possibly dependent) compared to ancestral genotypes. This trend was potentially influenced by the moderator variables density, pre-germination, plant, plant type and AMF species. AM root colonization was also important for the mycorrhizal responsiveness trend for year of release, but P efficiency was not.

Conclusions

With the data available we could find no evidence that new crop plant genotypes lost their ability to respond to mycorrhiza due to agricultural and breeding practices.  相似文献

  • 1 We investigated how modifications in winter and spring temperature conditions may affect the survival of a spring‐hatching Lepidoptera, the oak processionary moth Thaumetopoea processionea.
  • 2 Supercooling and chilling injury experiments indicate that eggs are especially cold hardy at the start of the winter period, although this ability is reduced later in the season. In the spring, young larvae are sufficiently cold hardy to ensure no direct mortality as a result of late frosts.
  • 3 A comparison of phenological models shows that neonate larvae may await the unfolding of new oak leaves for relatively long periods (e.g. 1–30 days). Under both low (4°C after 5 days at 16°C) and high temperature experimental scenarios (constant 16°C), the majority of neonate larvae can survive starvation for more than 2 weeks.
  • 4 Larvae may also suffer from food depletion once their development has been initiated (e.g. during cold springs) if the threshold temperature for feeding is not reached for several consecutive days, or in the case of late frosts affecting foliage availability. When temperature is reduced to 4°C, developing larvae become inactive and do not feed anymore; their starvation survival capability is reduced to approximately 2 weeks (cold spring hypothesis). At 16°C, developing larvae that are deprived of food can only survive for 10 days (late frost hypothesis).
  • 5 We conclude that, in the oak processionary moth, neonate larvae are relatively well adapted to early hatching relative to budburst, ensuring them the highest foliage quality for development. In some years, however, phenological asynchrony or cold spring conditions may affect the persistence of populations at the limits of the species' range.
