Adult ladybirds are likely to encounter various species of prey when foraging for oviposition sites. Optimal oviposition theory predicts that females should lay eggs in those sites that are the most suitable for offspring development. Therefore, factors that directly affect offspring mortality, such as the presence of predators and food, are expected to play an important role in the assessment of patch profitability by ladybird predators. Using a Y‐tube olfactometer, we tested whether the predatory ladybird Cycloneda sanguinea L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) can use volatile cues to assess patch profitability and avoid predator‐rich patches. We assessed the foraging behaviour of C. sanguinea in response to odours associated with tomato plants infested with a superior prey, Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas (Homoptera: Aphididae), and with an inferior prey, Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard (Acari: Tetranychidae), in the presence or absence of the heterospecific predator Eriopis connexa Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Females of C. sanguinea significantly preferred plants infested by M. euphorbiae to plants infested by T. evansi and avoided odours emanating from plants on which E. connexa females were present. Our results show that C. sanguinea use volatile cues to assess patch profitability and to avoid patches with heterospecific competitors or intraguild predators. 相似文献

This study assessed the feeding strategies of nine fish species in their native (Cuiabá River) and in an invaded basin (upper Paraná River) to identify trophic variables that may explain the success of these species in the new basin, over 30 years. The following predictions were analyzed: (i) species that display omnivorous or piscivorous diets in the native basin are favored in the invasion process over the long term, and (ii) specialist feeders are favored in the invasion process provided that their food items are highly available in the invaded area. These predictions were supported by the data; the species that were successful invaders had high trophic plasticity (omnivores), consumed a wide variety of food items from specific trophic guilds (piscivores), or if a species had a specialized diet, the resources demanded are abundant (detritivores). Thus, in a long-term perspective, the food resources used by these species are rarely limiting in aquatic ecosystems, and these feeding characteristics should be one of the key factors determining the colonization success of fishes. Lipid peroxidation induced by Fe2+ADP in soybean mitochondriais stimulated by pyruvate, malate (in the presence of NAD2+)and by NAD(P)H. This lipid peroxidation is almost completelyinhibited by EDTA indicating that iron is essential. Also salicylhydroxamicacid, a specific inhibitor of the alternate oxidase, is a stronginhibitor of lipid peroxidation but its effect should be relatedto chelation or to a general antioxidant action. Mouse Neuro-2a neuroblastoma and rat C6 glioma cloned cells were screened for neuropeptide-metabolizing peptidases using a kininase bioassay combined with a time-course bradykinin-product analysis, and a fluorimetric assay for prolyl endopeptidase. The complementary peptide products Arg1----Phe5/Ser6----Arg9 and Arg1----Pro7/Phe8-Arg9 were released during bradykinin (Arg1-Pro2-Pro3-Gly4-Phe5-Ser6-Pro7-Phe8-Arg9) inactivation by homogenates of Neuro-2a and C6 cells. The 1:1 stoichiometry of the complementary fragments and their high yields, at 10% bradykinin inactivation, demonstrated the sites of hydrolysis. The initial rate of Phe5-Ser6 bond cleavage was six-fold higher than that of the Pro7-Phe8 bond. These sites of cleavage can be attributed to enzymes similar to endopeptidase A (Phe5-Ser6) and prolyl endopeptidase (Pro7-Phe8) on the basis of the specificity and sensitivity to inhibitors of the kininase activity in Neuro-2a and C6 cell homogenates. Kininase and prolyl endopeptidase specific activities (fmol/min/cell) were 10.5 and 12.4 for Neuro-2a, and 1.5 and 2 for C6 homogenate, respectively. The recovery of kininase activity was 2.2-fold higher in the particulate than in the soluble (105,000 g for 1 h) neuronal fraction, whereas the amount of prolyl endopeptidase activity was about the same in both fractions. Kininase and prolyl endopeptidase activities in C6 cells were recovered mostly in the soluble fraction. Prolyl endopeptidase specific activity decreased 10-fold in serum-starved Neuro-2a cultured cells, with no change in activity in similarly treated C6 cells. Fetal hemoglobin analysis and globin gene mapping have identified one type of beta(0)-thalassemia and four different gamma globin gene arrangements among newborn babies from the northern part of Sardinia. The beta(0)-thalassemia with a nonsense mutation at codon 39 was found on two chromosomes, each with a distinct pattern of polymorphic restriction sites; one had the A gamma T (A gamma 75 Ile----Thr) mutation, while the second did not. Four closely related haplotypes were identified for chromosomes with the A gamma T mutation. The gamma-thalassemia heterozygosity with the -GA gamma- hybrid gene fell into two categories. One apparently originated through crossing-over between mismatched chromosomes characterized by the most common haplotype, while the other had polymorphisms resembling those of a less frequently occurring chromosome. Chromosomes with the -G gamma-AG gamma-A gamma- triplication had polymorphic sites to be expected for this condition, being complimentary to the -GA gamma- thalassemias. Of the two additional gamma globin gene variations the -G gamma- G gamma- arrangement was associated with the chromosome with the most commonly occurring haplotype, while the chromosome with the -A gamma-A gamma- arrangement had a haplotype characteristic for that with the A gamma T mutation, which identified an -A gamma-A gamma T- arrangement. The incidental discovery of a silent beta-chain mutant, Hb Hamilton, with the Val----Ile substitution at position beta 11, in five newborns was also reported. 相似文献
