Reproductive ecology and growth of a population of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) in an aquifer-fed stream of Old Castile (Spain)

In the River Lobos-Ucero and its tributary the River Avión-Milanos (Duero basin, Old Castile, Central Spain), two limestone streams fed by aquifers, the population of brown trout, as compared with the populations of other European streams, shows a high growth rate, high condition coefficients, short life-span and early age at first maturity. Gonad cycle was also studied. Size distributions of unshed eggs exhibit a dynamic activity with a bi-modal distribution from June onwards, spawning occurred in the last days of November. Fecundity (F) can be predicted from trout length (L, mm) according to the equation: F= –646.47+5.6167 · L. Numbers and standing crop of trout range from 18 to 3903 ind. ha^–1 and 3.6 to 452.9 Kg ha^–1, reaching higher values in the sites close to the aquifers. Egg production had values of 22.4 and 18.0 eggs m^–2 in the Rivers Ucero and Avión-Milanos respectively. Some factors suggested as regulators of these demographical characteristics are discussed in the light of recent literature.     

Use of acyclovir in the prevention of herpes infections after allogenic bone marrow grafts

In a double-bind controlled study, oral Acyclovir has been compared to a placebo in a series of 39 consecutive patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation. A dose of 200 mg was given every 6 h from day 8 to day 35 after transplantation. Pharmacokinetic studies have shown the good absorption of the drug despite intestinal damage related to chemoradiotherapy or gut graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), there was no sign of toxicity. The protection against herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection was complete in the treated group when compared to the control group even in patients with high anti-HSV antibody titres. The same protection was observed against cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The incidence of HSV and CMV was the same in both groups after treatment ended. This study confirms the efficacy of Acyclovir against HSV infection and possibly against CMV infection when it is given prophylactically after bone marrow transplantation.     

Long-term effects of postovulatory aging of mouse oocytes on offspring: a two-generational study.

Aims of this study were to analyze the long-term effects of postovulatory aging of mouse oocytes on 1) reproductive traits of parental (F(0)) and first (F(1))-generation females (pregnancy rate, gestation length, litter size, perinatal death, and sex ratio of offspring) and 2) developmental and behavioral variables of F(1) and second-generation (F(2)) offspring (birth weight and weight gain during preweaning development, postnatal day of attainment of immediate righting, spontaneous motor activity, and passive and active conditioned learning ability). Hybrid (C57BL/6JIco x CBA/JIco) females were artificially inseminated at 13 h (control group) or 22 h (oocyte-aged group) after GnRH injection. Experimental (oocyte-aged group) F(0) females exhibited lower pregnancy rate, shortened gestation length, decreased litter size, higher perinatal death of their pups, and increased percentage of male offspring compared to control F(0) females. Postovulatory aging of oocytes was also associated with increased number of growth-retarded pups, delayed development of the righting reflex, and higher spontaneous motor activity and emotionality of F(1) offspring. Postovulatory aging of F(0) oocytes did not affect birth weight, weight gain during preweaning development, passive and active conditioned learning ability of F(1) offspring, or reproductive traits of F(1) females or developmental and behavior variables of F(2) offspring.     

Involvement of protease in L-glutamine control of nucleic acid and polyphosphate metabolism in cells transformed by 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene, SV40 and H-ras oncogene

Mammalian cells transformed with either 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene, SV40 or H-ras oncogene dramatically changed their ability to synthesize DNA and RNA and metabolize polyphosphate when L-glutamine was withdrawn from the growth medium or when heat shocked (growth at 42 degrees C). Untransformed, DNA and RNA synthesis decreased by 50-80% when glutamine was withdrawn, but polyphosphate accumulated whether or not glutamine was supplied. Heat shock did not alter this response. Transformed isogenic cells responded differently; at 37 degrees C, they decreased their synthesis of DNA and RNA if starved for glutamine, whereas at 42 degrees C, synthesis was optimal without glutamine. Transformed cells accumulated polyphosphate at 37 degrees C when starved for glutamine, but at 42 degrees C, no polyphosphate accumulated. This apparent non-dependence on glutamine by transformed cells when heat shocked was found to be due to the production of glutamine from serum proteins through induction of a protease(s).     

Photoreconversion of blowfly visual pigment proceeds through a slowly (13 ms) decaying intermediate

Summary The photochemical cycle of the visual pigment molecules in the blowflyCalliphora erythrocephala was investigated by transmission measurements, making use of the fact that intermediate states of the visual pigment molecules each have a characteristic absorption spectrum.It is shown that the conversion of metaxanthopsin (M 580) to the native xanthopsin state (P 490) induced by an orange-red light pulse proceeds through a newly discovered intermediate (N), which thermally decays with a time constant of about 13 ms at room temperature.The absorption spectrum of N peaks in the blue-green at about 490 nm. In the green and orange N absorbs more strongly than the native xanthopsin, but in the blue N and xanthopsin absorb almost equally. The formation of L-3-phosphoglyceric acid by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase

A sensitive and reliable method to determine the stereochemical composition of 3-phosphoglyceric acid is presented. Results obtained with this method show that 3-phosphoglyceric acid formed in the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase reaction is a mixture of 10% L-3-PGA and 90% D-3-PGA.
