Laboratory measurements of physiological and demographic tolerances are important in understanding the impact of climate change on species diversity; however, it has been recognized that forecasts based solely on these laboratory estimates overestimate risk by omitting the capacity for species to utilize microclimatic variation via behavioral adjustments in activity patterns or habitat choice. The complex, and often context‐dependent nature, of microclimate utilization has been an impediment to the advancement of general predictive models. Here, we overcome this impediment and estimate the potential impact of warming on the fitness of ectotherms using a benefit/cost trade‐off derived from the simple and broadly documented thermal performance curve and a generalized cost function. Our framework reveals that, for certain environments, the cost of behavioral thermoregulation can be reduced as warming occurs, enabling behavioral buffering (e.g., the capacity for behavior to ameliorate detrimental impacts) and “behavioral rescue” from extinction in extreme cases. By applying our framework to operative temperature and physiological data collected at an extremely fine spatial scale in an African lizard, we show that new behavioral opportunities may emerge. Finally, we explore large‐scale geographic differences in the impact of behavior on climate‐impact projections using a global dataset of 38 insect species. These multiple lines of inference indicate that understanding the existing relationship between thermal characteristics (e.g., spatial configuration, spatial heterogeneity, and modal temperature) is essential for improving estimates of extinction risk. 相似文献

Statolith trace elemental concentrations can be used as natural tracers to better understand life history and stock structure of squid. A highly variable Humboldt squid population was targeted to determine if ontogenic patterns could be revealed and to compare variations among squid collected from three geographic areas. Statoliths from Humboldt squid collected off Westport, WA; Oceanside, CA; and the Galapagos Islands were sampled for ten trace elements using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Similar patterns were found for some elements despite geographic collection site distances indicating a potential to explain ontogenic shifts experienced by this species. Other elements displayed high variation in spatial pattern, which suggests the potential to distinguish among the squid collected from the three geographic regions and better understand stock structure. Within the California and Washington squid, eight of the elements varied in relation to calcium across the statolith with only yttrium and zirconium remaining statistically invariant. In addition to these two elements, copper and zinc also did not vary significantly across the statoliths collected from Galapagos squid. All elements demonstrate potential to influence a multivariate elemental fingerprint, which may provide a useful measure of population discrimination needed for stock assessment. 相似文献

Recent studies using mouse models for cell fate tracing of epicardial derived cells (EPDCs) have demonstrated that at the atrioventricular (AV) junction EPDCs contribute to the mesenchyme of the AV sulcus, the annulus fibrosus, and the parietal leaflets of the AV valves. There is little insight, however, into the mechanisms that govern the contribution of EPDCs to these tissues. While it has been demonstrated that bone morphogenetic protein (Bmp) signaling is required for AV cushion formation, its role in regulating EPDC contribution to the AV junction remains unexplored. To determine the role of Bmp signaling in the contribution of EPDCs to the AV junction, the Bmp receptor activin-like kinase 3 (Alk3; or Bmpr1a) was conditionally deleted in the epicardium and EPDCs using the mWt1/IRES/GFP-Cre (Wt1Cre) mouse. Embryonic Wt1Cre;Alk3fl/fl specimens showed a significantly smaller AV sulcus and a severely underdeveloped annulus fibrosus. Electrophysiological analysis of adult Wt1Cre;Alk3fl/fl mice showed, unexpectedly, no ventricular pre-excitation. Cell fate tracing revealed a significant decrease in the number of EPDCs within the parietal leaflets of the AV valves. Postnatal Wt1Cre;Alk3fl/fl specimens showed myxomatous changes in the leaflets of the mitral valve. Together these observations indicate that Alk3 mediated Bmp signaling is important in the cascade of events that regulate the contribution of EPDCs to the AV sulcus, annulus fibrosus, and the parietal leaflets of the AV valves. Furthermore, this study shows that EPDCs do not only play a critical role in early developmental events at the AV junction, but that they also are important in the normal maturation of the AV valves. 相似文献

There is typically considerable variation in the level of infectivity of parasites and the degree of resistance of hosts within populations. This trait variation is critical not only to the evolutionary dynamics but also to the epidemiology, and potentially the control of infectious disease. However, we lack an understanding of the processes that generate and maintain this trait diversity. We examine theoretically how epidemiological feedbacks and the characteristics of the interaction between host types and parasites strains determine the coevolution of host–parasite diversity. The interactions include continuous characterizations of the key phenotypic features of classic gene‐for‐gene and matching allele models. We show that when there are costs to resistance in the hosts and infectivity in the parasite, epidemiological feedbacks may generate diversity but this is limited to dimorphism, often of extreme types, in a broad range of realistic infection scenarios. For trait polymorphism, there needs to be both specificity of infection between host types and parasite strains as well as incompatibility between particular strains and types. We emphasize that although the high specificity is well known to promote temporal “Red Queen” diversity, it is costs and combinations of hosts and parasites that cannot infect that will promote static trait diversity. 相似文献
