Predator-induced hatching plasticity has been demonstrated in many species of amphibians. However, animals from other clades (e.g., marine species of molluscs and annelids) also place their embryos in capsules or gelatinous masses and might also exhibit hatching plasticity to predators. To date there is no evidence of predator-induced hatching plasticity from any marine species or a major clade of bilateria animals, the Lophotrochozoa. We studied predator-induced hatching plasticity of Nucella lamellosa, a carnivorous marine snail that deposits embryos in capsules. We used two experiments to investigate the effects of two types of predator, crabs and isopods, on developing embryos. In the first experiment, we quantified proportion of hatched embryos from capsules through time exposed to water-borne chemicals of crabs and isopods. Crabs delayed time-to-hatching, and the effects of predators were additive. In the second experiment, we quantified proportion of hatched embryos from capsules through time, developmental stage, and size of embryos in capsules exposed to water-borne chemicals of crabs and conspecifics. With this experiment, we wanted to answer: (1) whether a delay in hatching corresponded to embryos developing slower, and (2) whether the general products of metabolic waste from organisms can delay hatching. We unexpectedly observed that adult conspecific snails accelerated hatching but not developmental rate—the few past studies on the effects of conspecifics have all demonstrated that conspecifics delay time-to-hatching and rate of development. The results were also inconsistent with metabolic waste in general causing a delay in hatching, although the effect of conspecifics does weaken this inference. This study demonstrates that predators delay time-to-hatching in a marine mollusc, and suggests that predator-induced hatching plasticity is widespread among animals and likely evolved multiple times within the bilateria. In addition, conspecifics accelerated time-to-hatching in a marine mollusc, which suggests that conspecifics, like predators, might commonly influence when embryos hatch.  相似文献

The DcuS-DcuR system of Escherichia coli is a two-component sensor-regulator that controls gene expression in response to external C(4)-dicarboxylates and citrate. The DcuS protein is particularly interesting since it contains two PAS domains, namely a periplasmic C(4)-dicarboxylate-sensing PAS domain (PASp) and a cytosolic PAS domain (PASc) of uncertain function. For a study of the role of the PASc domain, three different fragments of DcuS were overproduced and examined: they were PASc-kinase, PASc, and kinase. The two kinase-domain-containing fragments were autophosphorylated by [gamma-(32)P]ATP. The rate was not affected by fumarate or succinate, supporting the role of the PASp domain in C(4)-dicarboxylate sensing. Both of the phosphorylated DcuS constructs were able to rapidly pass their phosphoryl groups to DcuR, and after phosphorylation, DcuR dephosphorylated rapidly. No prosthetic group or significant quantity of metal was found associated with either of the PASc-containing proteins. The DNA-binding specificity of DcuR was studied by use of the pure protein. It was found to be converted from a monomer to a dimer upon acetylphosphate treatment, and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis suggested that it can oligomerize. DcuR specifically bound to the promoters of the three known DcuSR-regulated genes (dctA, dcuB, and frdA), with apparent K(D)s of 6 to 32 micro M for untreated DcuR and < or =1 to 2 microM for the acetylphosphate-treated form. The binding sites were located by DNase I footprinting, allowing a putative DcuR-binding motif [tandemly repeated (T/A)(A/T)(T/C)(A/T)AA sequences] to be identified. The DcuR-binding sites of the dcuB, dctA, and frdA genes were located 27, 94, and 86 bp, respectively, upstream of the corresponding +1 sites, and a new promoter was identified for dcuB that responds to DcuR.  相似文献

Twelve neonatal calves were experimentally infected with oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum. Six calves in group A fed hyperimmune colostrum at birth had significantly less diarrhea and shed oocysts for less time than did 6 calves in group B fed colostrum from cows that were not hyperimmune. Calves in group A had diarrhea for 0-4 days (means = 2.3 days), whereas calves in group B had diarrhea for 4-6 days (means = 5.0 days). Calves in group A shed oocysts for 4-9 days (means = 6.2 days), whereas calves in group B shed oocysts for 7-11 days (means = 8.5 days). These findings indicate that passive lacteal immunity conferred partial protection against cryptosporidiosis. Whether such protection was provided by the immunoglobulins that were highly elevated in the colostrum (greater than 1:200,000 for IgG1, IgM, and IgA) and constituted a large part of the circulating antibody in the calves, or by other biologically active factors, such as cytokines, is undetermined.  相似文献

The molecular orbital method PCILO is applied to eight. N-monsubstituted amides. Experimentally known geometric properties are reasonably predicted by minimization of total energy with respect to molecular geometry. The same procedure shows that molecular deformations during rotation around the peptide bond significantly lower calculated barriers. Experimental heats of activation and the free-energy changes associated with cis–trans isomerism are in good agreement with those calculated, which include qualitative estimates of configurational entropy contributions to the isomerism energies. Both the calculations and revised infrared data indicate that N-phenylurethane, which has been used as a model for the cis peptide bond, should be predominantly trans. However the variations in rotational barriers and cis–trans isomerism energies among the N-monosubstituted amides provide no reason to suppose that the cis peptide bond should be excluded from stable protein conformations.  相似文献

Sphaeridiothrix compressa was found in a. saline pond in central Kansas in 1966. Studies in culture have shown that it reproduces readily by zoosporogenesis when grown in media of 12–21 ppt (%0) total salt. Its taxonomic position in the Chrysophyceae and synonymy with S. globulosa, S. brunea, and Chrysodictyon indicum are discussed. This is the first report of Sphaeridiothrix in the Western Hemisphere, and the first account of zoosporogenesis in the genus.  相似文献
