The effect of population density on immigration success of young root voles was studied in a factorial experiment where immigrants of three different types were translocated from donor populations to recipient habitat patches with experimentally manipulated population sizes. The different types of immigrants were: (1) residents, animals that had remained in their natal patch; (2) colonists, animals that already had successfully dispersed and settled in a new patch; and (3) transients, animals roaming around in a non-habitable matrix area of the donor population. Generally, we found evidence for a negative density-dependent immigration success in terms of survival, rate of sexual maturation and body growth rate. With respect to the survival rate, the degree of density dependence differed among the three immigrant types. Our findings are discussed with respect to the degree of rescue effect immigrants may have on a recipient population depending on population density, and also its relevance concerning translocation of individuals for conserving endangered populations.  相似文献

Despite their strong role in human health, poor bioavailability of flavonoids limits their biological effects in vivo. Enzymatically catalyzed acylation of fatty acids to flavonoids is one of the approaches of increasing cellular permeability and hence, biological activities. In this study, six long chain fatty acid esters of quercetin-3-O-glucoside (Q3G) acylated enzymatically and were used for determining their antiproliferative action in hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) in comparison to precursor compounds and two chemotherapy drugs (Sorafenib and Cisplatin). Fatty acid esters of Q3G showed significant inhibition of HepG2 cell proliferation by 85 to 90% after 6 h and 24 h of treatment, respectively. The cell death due to these novel compounds was associated with cell-cycle arrest in S-phase and apoptosis observed by DNA fragmentation, fluorescent microscopy and elevated caspase-3 activity and strong DNA topoisomerase II inhibition. Interestingly, Q3G esters showed significantly low toxicity to normal liver cells than Sorafenib (P < 0.05), a chemotherapy drug for hepatocellular carcinoma. Among all, oleic acid ester of Q3G displayed the greatest antiproliferation action and a high potential as an anti-cancer therapeutic. Overall, the results of the study suggest strong antiproliferative action of these novel food-derived compounds in treatment of cancer.  相似文献

Protein phosphatase-1 (PP-1) is involved in the regulation of numerous metabolic processes in mammalian cells. The major isoforms of PP-1, α, γ1, and δ, have nearly identical catalytic domains, but they vary in sequence at their extreme NH2 and COOH termini. With specific antibodies raised against the unique COOH-terminal sequence of each isoform, we find that the three PP-1 isoforms are each expressed in all mammalian cells tested, but that they localize within these cells in a strikingly distinct and characteristic manner. Each isoform is present both within the cytoplasm and in the nucleus during interphase. Within the nucleus, PP-1 α associates with the nuclear matrix, PP-1 γ1 concentrates in nucleoli in association with RNA, and PP-1 δ localizes to nonnucleolar whole chromatin. During mitosis, PP-1 α is localized to the centrosome, PP-1 γ1 is associated with microtubules of the mitotic spindle, and PP-1 δ strongly associates with chromosomes. We conclude that PP-1 isoforms are targeted to strikingly distinct and independent sites in the cell, permitting unique and independent roles for each of the isoforms in regulating discrete cellular processes.  相似文献

Based on evidence from a series of recent studies linking behaviour to demography in experimental vole populations we propose how intrinsic and extrinsic factors interact through the various phases of the multi‐annual population cycles of voles and lemmings. We hypothesise that population growth in the increase phase of the cycle is enhanced by a high degree of space sharing (sociality) among reproductive females who share resource patches, especially during winter. These social females enjoy a high reproductive output due to good resource conditions, and facilitation provided by communal thermoregulation, breeding and defence of weanlings towards infanticidal conspecifics. We hypothesise on the other hand that the crash phase is initiated and enhanced by predation of adult males that leads to a series of cascading events involving infanticidal behaviour by immigrant males, increased mortality of adult social females, and inversely density‐dependent and/or disturbance‐induced dispersal. These events further enhance predation‐induced mortality and thus a negative feed‐back loop to the rate of the crash. In this framework we may explain how extrinsic factors such as predation and winter resource distribution contribute to transitions between docile and aggressive behaviours, and how this transition is spatially synchronised by inversely density‐dependent dispersal that may act to mediate a rapidly spreading wave throughout the population. We propose that innate differences among rodent species in their propensities for different social organizations also determine their propensity for exhibiting multi‐annual cycles as well as other cycle‐related phenomena such as shape of the population cycles and spatial synchrony. We provide a set of testable predictions for further empirical evaluation.  相似文献

The molecular signals that determine the position and timing of the furrow that forms during mammalian cell cytokinesis are presently unknown. It is apparent, however, that these signals are generated by the mitotic spindle after the onset of anaphase. Recently we have described a structure that bisects the cell during telophase at the position of the cytokinetic furrow. This structure, the telephase disc, appears to the templated by the motitc spindle during anaphase, and precedes the formation of the cytokinetic furrow. The relationship of the telephase disc to the myosin and actin based furrowing mechanism is discussed here. We propose that the telophase disc may determine the position and timing of cleavage by recruitment and alignment of myosin.  相似文献

Roepstorff A. and Andreassen J. 1982. Course of heavy primary infections and earlier immunologically mediated rejection of secondary infections of Hymenolepis diminuta in mice. International Journal for Parasitology12: 23–28. The worms of heavy (50–100 worms) primary Hymenolepis diminuta infections in inbred C57-mice were 1–2 mm long when growth ceased about day 4. Thereafter the mean length decreased by shrinkage and/or ‘decollation’, the worms moved backwards in the small intestine and were rejected from day 6 to day 10. Heavy secondary infections given 14 days after a heavy primary infection were severely stunted (0.2–0.3 mm) but normally situated in the intestine on day 2 and nearly all were rejected by day 4. Even when the time between the primary and secondary infections was increased to 21 or 42 days, therecovery, position and length of the secondary worms were significantly different from primary infections. These results show that an immunologically mediated memory was involved, and that functional antigens can be released from the scolex and/or the neck alone.  相似文献

When measured 56 days postinfection the length, wet weight and dry weight of Hymenolepis diminuta were all found to decrease with increasing number of cysticercoids given up to 20. The mean position of the worms in 10, 12 and 20 worm infections is significantly posterior to that of 1, 2 and 5 worm infections and the worms are attached over a wider area of the intestine. Egg production by the worms was followed up to day 56 postinfection; the number of eggs produced per worm and even per rat decreased with increasing population density. Thus the best way to get most eggs and to maintain the parasite in the laboratory is to have rats infected with only one tapeworm. Rats given 1-20 cysticercoids showed a mean recovery of 100-65%, while rats given 40-200 cysticercoids showed a mean recovery ranging from 13 to 2%. In addition to 'normal' worms, defined as worms greater than 10 mm, small, most probably destrobilated, worms were found. In the 50 and 100 cysticercoid infections, worm recoveries were, respectively, 8% 'normal', 16% small, and 2% 'normal', 5% small. From the significantly lower recovery from heavy infections it is concluded that a deleterious factor is operating during the 8 weeks after the infection.  相似文献

Biomechanical properties and collagen formation in the granulation tissue of cellulose sponges, implanted subcutaneously in male rats for 7, 10 and 16 days, were tested after treatment with biosynthetic human growth hormone given subcutaneously in a dose of 0.5 mg/kg body weight/day. At each implantation period, one group started hormone treatment at the day of implantation and another group started hormone treatment 7 days prior to implantation. After 7 days of implantation, increases in maximum stress (36 per cent), relative failure energy (48 per cent) and strain at maximum stress (25 per cent) were found when treatment was started 7 days prior to implantation. After 10 days of implantation an increase in relative failure energy (60 per cent) was found when treatment was started 7 days prior to implantation. No differences were found after 7 and 10 days of implantation when treatment was started at the day of implantation. After 16 days of implantation, no influence on mechanical strength was found in any of the hormone treated groups. The collagen deposition after 7, 10 and 16 days did not differ in any of the hormone treated groups compared to controls.  相似文献
