Fluoritisierte Radiolarien aus Kieselkalk-Bänken des Mittel-Viseums (Unterkarbon) des Rheinischen Schiefergebirges (Deutschland)

From siliceous shales (Lower Carboniferous, Rheinisches Schiefergebirge), in direct neighborhood to a bed of allodapic limestone, the following fluontized radiolarian fauna has been extracted by chemical transformation of originally calcified skeletons:Albaillella cartalla, Latentifistula turgida, Eostylodktya cf. eccentrica, Tetragregnon sycamorensis sycamorensis, Belowea variabilis, Callela? hexactinia, Entactinia tortispina and Entactinia variospina. The limestone bed has been dated by calcareous foraminifera as being mid Visean in age (V 2b-3a, Cf 5-foraminiferal zone). The diagenetic calcification took place after the selective dissolution of the skeletons and was in itself not selective.     

Isolation and characterization of high-mobility-group proteins from maize

Chromosomal nonhistone high-mobility-group (HMG) proteins were purified from nuclei of maize (Zea mays L. cv. A619) endosperm and leaf tissue. Tissuespecific differences were observed in their polypeptide patterns, in in-vitro phosphorylation experiments with a casein-kinase type II, and by Western blot analysis with antisera against different HMG proteins. Gelfiltration chromatography demonstrated that maize HMG proteins occur as monomers. Specific eradication of micrometastases by transfer of tumour-immune T cells from major-histocompatibility-complex congenic mice

Summary DBA/2 (H-2^d) mice bearing a transplanted highly metastatic lymphoma (ESb) in a state of widely disseminated disease could be successfully treated by a combination of surgery (removal of the local tumour), irradiation (5 Gy) and adoptive immunotherapy. The immunotherapy was achieved by transfer of anti-ESb-immune spleen cells from B10.D2 mice, which express the same major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules as DBA/2. In contrast, anti-ESb-immune cells from MHC-disparate C57BL/6 mice did not confer protective immunity. The B10.D2 anti-ESb-immune T cells contain two types of cytolytic specificity as detected by limiting-dilution analysis: (1) clones with specificity for the ESb-tumour-associated transplantation antigen (TATA) (at low frequency), and (b) clones with specificity for minor DBA/2 histocompatibility (H) antigens (at high frequency). Immune B10.D2 cells raised against different tumour lines or against TATA^– ESb tumour variants did not confer the 100% protection seen with immune cells against ESb TATA⁺ cells. Finally we demonstrate that the allogeneic immune cells are more potent in terms of protective immunity than corresponding syngeneic immune cells. The data suggest that the strong graft-versus-leukemia effect with immune T cells from allogeneic MHC-identical but not from MHC-disparate mice was due to T cells with MHC-restricted specificity for an ESb-associated TATA. A graft-versus-host reactivity that developed much later and could not be prevented was most likely due to T cells sensitized against normal minor H antigens of the host. Our results are of potential relevance for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and adoptive immunotherapy protocols.     

DNA sequence of the coding region of the HLA-B44 gene

An HLA-B44 cDNA clone was identified in a cDNA library constructed from an HLA-B44 homozygous cell line. The DNA sequence was determined and was found to contain the complete coding sequence but for (probably) the three N-terminal codons. Comparisons of the derived amino acid sequence with other HLA-A and -B locus amino acid sequences revealed four HLA-B44-specific substitutions including a new polymorphic site. Regions of strong sequence conservation for HLA-B-locus products were found at the nucleotide and amino acid levels.     

Wave frequency recognition and absolute pitch for water waves in the clawed frog,Xenopus laevis

Summary The ability of adultXenopus laevis to identify water wave frequencies was demonstrated by go/no-go conditioning. The effect of centrifugal accelerations on the polarity of statocytes and on the graviperception of cress roots

The structural polarity of statocytes of Lepidium sativum L. is converted to a physical stratification by a root-tip-directed centrifugal acceleration. Sedimentation of amyloplasts and nucleus to the centrifugal (distal) cell pole and the lateral displacement of the distal endoplasmic reticulum (ER) complex occur after centrifugation for 20 min at an acceleration of 50 g. With higher doses (20 min, 100-2,000 g), smaller organelles become increasingly displaced. From the centrifugal to the centripetal cell pole, the following stratification is observed: 1) amyloplasts with mitochondria; 2) nucleus with mitochondria and a few dictyosomes, as well as laterally located ER; 3) dictyosomes with a few mitochondria; 4) vacuoles; and 5) lipid droplets. Within the first 7.5 min, after the roots have been returned to 1 g, the original arrangement of the amyloplasts sedimented on the underlying ER complex is reestablished in 66% of the statocytes. When roots previously centrifuged in an apical direction are exposed in a horizontal position to 1 g, the latent period of the graviresponse is increased by 7.5 min relative to the non-centrifuged controls. The kinetics of the response are identical to the controls. Roots centrifuged first in an apical direction and then for 2 h in a lateral direction (1,000 g) have statocytes with a physical stratification perpendicular to the root axis. A gravitropic curvature does not take place during the lateral centrifugation. These results support the hypothesis that the distal ER complex is necessary and sufficient for graviperception.
