The plasmid content and toxicity of nine different strains ofMicrocystis aeruginosa have been analyzed. The two toxic strains of the HUB Culture Collection were found to carry each two plasmids, pMA1 and pMA2, of 2.9 kb and 8.5 kb, respectively. In strains PCC 7813 and PCC 7820, also toxic, two different plasmids of 2.6 kb and 16 kb were detected. Hybridization experiments showed that there exists no sequence homology between the pMA plasmids and the plasmids found in the PCC strains; but the pMA plasmids hybridized to chromosomal DNA of the toxic strains PCC 7820, PCC 7813, HUB 063, and the nontoxic strain HUB 5-3. In nontoxic strains no or at most one plasmid of unstable occurrence could be detected. Only one of the toxic strains investigated, SAG 14.85 (NRC-1), contained no plasmid. 相似文献

Summary In females of the acridid grasshopperChorthippus biguttulus, thoracic auditory interneurons were investigated with respect to their selectivity for temporal parameters of the conspecific song. Special attention was given to the detection of small gaps in the syllables of the song, since behavioural experiments have shown that the presence or absence of gaps is critical for the female's Innate Releasing Mechanism (cf. Fig. 1).The spiking response of one ascending interneuron, the AN4, shows filtering properties which closely resemble the behavioural reactions (cf. Figs. 1, 3 and 5b). The difference in the AN4's reaction to stimuli with gaps and uninterrupted stimuli is maintained over the behaviourally relevant intensity range (Fig. 4). This reaction is reliable enough that the stimulus type could be inferred by higher centres even from single stimulus presentations. Hence, this neuron is likely to participate in the task of gap detection and probably is a part of the neuronal filter network which determines the characteristics of the Innate Releasing Mechanism of this species. However, this interneuron is not species-specific: A homologue exists in other acridids as well and, inLocusta migratoria, has similar response characteristics (Fig. 6). The inferences of this observation for the evolution of an Innate Releasing Mechanism are discussed.Abbreviations

Preliminary data indicate the potential utility of an implantable subcutaneous device that facilitates chronic intravenous infusion of pulsatile gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) for ovulation induction. GnRH distribution curves were congruent in control monkeys and those with implanted devices. Tissue tolerance was good in this brief trial. A gas sampling device is described for continuous monitoring of respiratory gas composition that is applicable to experimental conditions when the breathing frequency is very high (greater than 2 Hz) and the response time of conventional gas analyzers becomes a critical limiting factor. The system utilizes the principle of discontinuous gas collection at any selected point of the respiratory cycle facilitated by ultraspeed piezoelectric valves and includes provision for sample-hold characteristics. Two distinct modes of operation are supported. In phase-locked mode gas sampling is synchronous with breathing frequency. In scanning mode gas collection is asynchronous with breathing frequency. Phase-locked mode may be used for continuous monitoring of end-tidal gas concentrations, whereas scanning mode is intended for assessing the gas concentration profile throughout the respiratory cycle. The system may be applied to steady breathing encountered in mechanical ventilation at high frequency or during quasi-steady breathing observed in panting animals. Combined with a respiratory mass spectrometer, the system has been used for measurement of gas concentrations in alveolar gas mixtures at breathing frequencies ranging from 3 to 30 Hz that were otherwise not amenable to rapid measuring techniques. 相似文献

Summary A method for the rapid determination of the lengths and surface areas of very large samples of needles of Picea abies (L.) Karst. using a computer-aided image analysis system was developed. Two independent methods for measuring non-destructively the volumes of individual needles and of all needles attached to a twig were devised. The surface areas and lengths of about 38000 needles sampled from the three youngest needle age-classes (1986, 1985, 1984) of 48 trees approximately 130 years old at four sites in the Fichtelgebirge mountains (N. E. Bavaria, FRG) were measured. The frequency distributions of lengths and areas for each site and age-class are given. Variability of needle size was fairly large. Even though the sites differed in climate, soil, and air pollution levels no consistent effect of these factors on needle size could be detected. Needle lengths and surface areas did not correlate with either the total chlorophyll content of the needles or the degree of crown thinning. The needle surface area (in mm2) of fully developed P. abies needles can be estimated by the empirical equation surface area = 4.440 x needle length -24.8 (r = 0.937), and the needle volume (in mm3) by needle volume = 0.208 x projected needle area

Recently, we have shown that an untrained respiratory system does limit the endurance of submaximal exercise (64% peak oxygen consumption) in normal sedentary subjects. These subjects were able to increase breathing endurance by almost 300% and cycle endurance by 50% after isolated respiratory training. The aim of the present study was to find out if normal, endurance trained subjects would also benefit from respiratory training. Breathing and cycle endurance as well as maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and anaerobic threshold were measured in eight subjects. Subsequently, the subjects trained their respiratory muscles for 4 weeks by breathing 85-160 l.min-1 for 30 min daily. Otherwise they continued their habitual endurance training. After respiratory training, the performance tests made at the beginning of the study were repeated. Respiratory training increased breathing endurance from 6.1 (SD 1.8) min to about 40 min. Cycle endurance at the anaerobic threshold [77 (SD 6) %VO2max] was improved from 22.8 (SD 8.3) min to 31.5 (SD 12.6) min while VO2max and the anaerobic threshold remained essentially the same. Therefore, the endurance of respiratory muscles can be improved remarkably even in trained subjects. Respiratory muscle fatigue induced hyperventilation which limited cycle performance at the anaerobic threshold. After respiratory training, minute ventilation for a given exercise intensity was reduced and cycle performance at the anaerobic threshold was prolonged. These results would indicate the respiratory system to be an exercise limiting factor in normal, endurance trained subjects. 相似文献

Aerobic organisms degrade hydroaromatic compounds via the hydroaromatic pathway yielding protocatechuic acid which is further metabolized by oxygenase-mediated ring fission in the 3-oxoadipate pathway. No information exists on anaerobic degradation of hydroaromatics so far. We enriched and isolated from various sources of anoxic sediments several strains of rapidly growing gram-negative bacteria fermenting quinic (1,3,4,5-tetrahydroxy-cyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid) and shikimic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxy-1-cyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid) in the absence of external electron acceptors. Quinic and shikimic acid were the only ones utilized of more than 30 substrates tested. The marine isolates formed acetate, butyrate, and H2, whereas all freshwater strains formed acetate and propionate as typical fermentation products. Aromatic intermediates were not involved in this degradation. Characterization of the isolates, fermentation balances for both hydroaromatic compounds, and enzyme activities involved in one degradation pathway are presented.Abbreviations BV
