Studies were made on determination of the amount of water in rat skin by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The NMR spectrum obtained depended on how the skin was packed into the NMR tube. Consistent results were obtained by packing the skin into a specially designed NMR cell. By this technique the amount of water in the skin could be measured accurately, and results were comparable with those obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. The water content of the skin of rats was consistently about 20% more in females than in males.  相似文献

Summary In brush border membrane vesicles from the midgut ofPhilosamia cynthia larvae (Lepidoptera) thel- andd-alanine uptake is dependent on a potassium gradient and on transmembrane electrical potential difference. Each isomer inhibits the uptake of the other form: inhibition ofl-alanine uptake byd-alanine is competitive, whereas inhibition ofd-alanine uptake byl-alanine is noncompetitive. Transstimulation experiments as well as the different pattern of specificity to cations suggest the existence of two transport systems. Kinetic parameters for the two transporters have been calculated both when Kout>Kin and Kout=Kin.d-alanine is actively transported also by the whole midgut, but it is not metabolized by the intestinal tissue.  相似文献

It is now known that nonphysiological cobalamin analogs exist in the gastrointestinal tract, but their metabolic behavior is unclear. In this study, [57Co]cobinamide was used to study its affinity to hog intrinsic factor-cobalamin (IF-Cbl) receptor which has no species specificity against human IF-Cbl receptor, and its relation to human saliva R binder. Cobinamide was prepared from [57Co]cyanocobalamin and separated by paper chromatography. Human IF-Cbl complex was bound to IF-Cbl receptor but free cyanocobalamin was not. Although R binder-cobinamide was not bound to the IF-Cbl receptor, free cobinamide was bound to the IF-Cbl receptor to a significant extent (about one-half of IF-cyanocobalamin binding to the IF-Cbl receptor). We then investigated the binding of cobinamide to R binder and trypsin-treated R binder. Association constant of cobinamide binding to the IF-Cbl receptor was 1.0 X 10(9) M-1 which was much lower than that of cobinamide binding to trypsin-treated R binder and to untreated R binder. Further study indicated that cobinamide binding to the IF-Cbl receptor was blocked by the addition of R binder and also by trypsin-treated R binder. We conclude that one of the roles of R binder is to prevent binding of free cobalamin analogs to the IF-Cbl receptor in the gut.  相似文献

Adult male and female worms of Schistosoma mansoni are able to incorporate [14C]cholesterol and convert it into several metabolites. Schistosomula on the other hand cannot convert the incorporated cholesterol. Male worms are able to transfer the [14C]cholesterol and labelled metabolites to female worms but labelled female worms can transfer cholesterol but are unable to transfer the conversion products of cholesterol to male worms. Uptake by female worms of labelled products shed by male worms seems to occur more efficiently in the presence of serum than in its absence.  相似文献

Frequency selectivity of hearing was measured in the green treefrog, Hyla cinerea. A psychophysical technique based on reflex modification was used to obtain masked threshold estimates for pure tones (300-5,400 Hz) presented against two levels of broadband masking noise. A pure tone (S-1) presented 200 ms prior to a reflex-eliciting stimulus (S-2) inhibited the motor reflex response to S-2. The magnitude of this reflex modification effect varied systematically with the sound pressure level (SPL) of S-1, and threshold was defined as the SPL of S-1 at which the reflex modification effect disappeared. Masked thresholds were used to calculate critical ratios, an index of the auditory system's frequency selectivity. The frequency selectivity of the treefrog's hearing is greatest and critical ratios are lowest (22-24 dB) at about 900 and 3,000 Hz, the two spectral regions dominant in the male treefrog's species-specific advertisement call. These results suggest that the treefrog's auditory system may be specialized to reject noise at biologically-relevant frequencies. As in other vertebrates, critical ratios remain constant when background noise level is varied; however, the shape of the treefrog's critical ratio function across frequencies differs from the typical vertebrate function that increases with increasing frequency at a slope of about 3 dB/octave. Instead, the treefrog's critical ratio function resembles its pure tone audiogram. Although the shape of the treefrog's critical ratio function is atypical, the critical ratio values themselves are comparable to those of many other vertebrates in the same frequency range. Critical ratio values here measured behaviorally do not match critical ratio values previously measured physiologically in single eighth nerve fibers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Larvae of the cockroach Diploptera punctata were reared in isolation, in pairs, or in groups of 8–10. Duration of larval development, age at each ecdysis, weights at birth and ecdyses, and adult head-capsule width were measured. Duration of larval development was longer and adult size was larger in isolated animals than in animals reared in pairs and groups. The effect of isolation on development was more pronounced in males. All females had 4 larval instars, whereas males had 3 or 4 instars. The proportion of males with 4 larval instars was higher among animals reared in isolation. There was no difference in the duration of larval development or adult size between pair- and group-reared animals. The sex of animals in the group did not affect adult size or the duration of larval development. Males which underwent 3 or 4 larval instars had different schedules of moulting. Rates of growth of males of both instar types reared in isolation and pairs were similar. Greater adult weight of isolated animals and 4-instar-type males was a result of their longer duration of larval development. Both a higher rate of growth and longer duration of larval development contribute to the larger adult size of females than males.  相似文献

When the diet of sheep is supplemented by the infusion of sulphur-containing amino acids or casein into the abomasum, the newly synthesized wool shows characteristic changes in its amino acid composition, with significant increases in cystine, proline and serine and decreases in aspartic acid and phenylalanine. This modification seems to be due entirely to an alteration in the overall composition of the high-sulphur proteins and to an increase in their proportion in the fibre. These variations are not the result of a change in the composition of individual proteins, but are due to alterations in their relative proportions and to the initiation of the synthesis of `new' proteins, many of which are extremely rich in cystine. It is suggested that the heterogeneity of the high-sulphur proteins may be due, in part, to similar changes in composition caused by natural variations in the nutrition of sheep.  相似文献

Sphaerotilus natans required calcium for the production of sheaths and probably requires calcium for growth as well, though at a lower concentration. Neither strontium nor barium substituted for calcium. S. natans grew attached to the culture vessels of the continuous-flow apparatus even when no sheaths were produced. Tentative evidence showed that the requirement for calcium is shared by the manganese-oxidizing species S. discophorus.  相似文献

The calcium in ammonia-base spent sulfite liquor, unlike that in calcium-base spent liquor, is not available for growth of Sphaerotilus natans.
