Summary Cachaça (sugarcane wine) was produced using different yeast strains, six being strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and one each of Candida apicola, Hanseniaspora occidentalis, Pichia subpelliculosa and Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The ethanol yields (%) of the non-Saccharomyces strains were similar to those of the Saccharomyces strains. The following determinations were carried out on the cachaça: acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, propanol, isobutyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol, volatile acidity. The cachaças showed variations in the levels of secondary compounds, but these variations did not result in differences (P ≤ 0.05) in the sensory attributes of aroma and flavour and overall impression. Of the volatile compounds quantified in the cachaças, only propanol showed a positive correlation (P ≤ 0.05) with the flavour attributes and overall impression. The S. pombe strain was considered inadequate for the production of cachaça. The cachaças were classified into five groups in an exploratory Hierarchical Cluster Analysis as a function of the volatile compounds. Principal Component Analysis showed that 93% of the variation (PC 1) occurred among the samples, and was explained by the individual volatile compounds and the total secondary compounds, with the exception of isoamyl alcohol only 7% (PC 2) was associated with the volatile acidity. The negative correlations shown between the volatile compounds of the cachaças and the ethanol content of the sugarcane wine, with the exception of acetaldehyde, showed that the variation in ethanol content of the sugarcane wine is an important factor for standardization of the ethanol/volatiles ratio and the beverage quality. 相似文献

The biodiversity of freshwater systems is endangered, especially in Mediterranean semiarid areas such as the south east of
the Iberian Peninsula, whose rich and endemic biota is threatened by the development of surrounding land-crop irrigation.
For this reason, the prioritization of areas for biodiversity conservation is an urgent target. In this study we used data
records of water beetles from a province of the southeast of Spain for assessing priority areas for freshwater biodiversity
conservation. We compare the performance of various area-selection methods, ranging from scoring procedures to complementarity-based
algorithms, which are based on different criteria such as richness, rarity and vulnerability. The complementarity approaches
were more efficient than methods using scoring or richness and rarity hotspots for representing conservation targets in a
given number of areas and for identifying the minimum set of areas containing all species at least once. Within these, the
richness-based algorithm was more efficient than rarity-based algorithm. Crucial target habitats for aquatic biodiversity
conservation in the area studied are streams at medium altitude, hypersaline streams, and endorreic and karstic complexes. 相似文献

We used mitochondrial DNA control region sequences to examine phylogeography and population differentiation of the endangered Amazonian manatee Trichechus inunguis. We observe lack of molecular differentiation among localities and we find weak association between geographical and genetic distances. However, nested clade analysis supports restricted gene flow and/or dispersal with some long-distance dispersal. Although this species has a history of extensive hunting, genetic diversity and effective population sizes are relatively high when compared to the West Indian manatee Trichechus manatus. Patterns of mtDNA haplotype diversity in T. inunguis suggest a genetic disequilibrium most likely explained by demographic expansion resulting from secession of hunting and enforcement of conservation and protective measures. Phylogenetic analysis of T. manatus and T. inunguis haplotypes suggests that T. inunguis is nested within T. manatus, effectively making T. manatus a paraphyletic entity. Paraphyly of T. manatus and recent divergence times of T. inunguis and the three main T. manatus lineages suggest a possible need for a taxonomic re-evaluation of the western Atlantic Trichechus. 相似文献

Because of its increasing incidence, breast cancer is a significant burden for women worldwide. In industrialized countries, breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women, and it is estimated that 1 in every 8 women will develop the disease during her lifetime. Sufficient evidence indicates that a number of genetic, environmental and lifestyle risk exposures during life may play important roles in the etiology of this disease. The purpose of this paper is to review some etiologic factors and underlying mechanisms in relation to breast cancer risk. Based on the published literature, there is sufficient evidence that some established factors are associated with breast cancer risk. Age, early age at menarche, late menopause, height, post-menopausal obesity, family history of breast cancer, ionizing radiation, oral contraceptives, hormonal replacement therapy, mammographic density, some gene mutations and clinical conditions, such as benign breast disease, are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. The risk decreases with early childbearing, high parity and physical activity, and breastfeeding. Alcohol increases the risk, while caloric restriction may confer protection from breast cancer. Epidemiological evidence for other nutritional factors is insufficient. These results suggest that breast cancer is a multifactorial disease where genetic susceptibility, environment, nutrition and other lifestyle risk factors interact. Better identification of modifiable risk factors and risk reduction of breast cancer may allow implementation of useful strategies for prevention. 相似文献

Dendrites represent arborising neurites in both vertebrates and invertebrates. However, in vertebrates, dendrites develop on neuronal cell bodies, whereas in higher invertebrates, they arise from very different neuronal structures, the primary neurites, which also form the axons. Is this anatomical difference paralleled by principal developmental and/or physiological differences? We address this question by focussing on one cellular model, motorneurons of Drosophila and characterise the compartmentalisation of these cells. We find that motorneuronal dendrites of Drosophila share with typical vertebrate dendrites that they lack presynaptic but harbour postsynaptic proteins, display calcium elevation upon excitation, have distinct cytoskeletal features, develop later than axons and are preceded by restricted localisation of Par6-complex proteins. Furthermore, we demonstrate in situ and culture that Drosophila dendrites can be shifted from the primary neurite to their soma, i.e. into vertebrate-like positions. Integrating these different lines of argumentation, we propose that dendrites in vertebrates and higher invertebrates have a common origin, and differences in dendrite location can be explained through translocation of neuronal cell bodies introduced during the evolutionary process by which arthropods and vertebrates diverged from a common urbilaterian ancestor. Implications of these findings for studies of dendrite development, neuronal polarity, transport and evolution are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract Is the cost of reproduction different between males and females? On the one hand, males typically compete intensely for mates, thus sexual selection theory predicts higher cost of reproduction for males in species with intense male‐male competition. On the other hand, care provisioning such as incubating the eggs and raising young may also be costly, thus parental care theory predicts higher mortality for the care‐giving sex, which is often the female. We tested both hypotheses of reproductive costs using phylogenetic comparative analyses of sex‐specific adult mortality rates of 194 bird species across 41 families. First, we show that evolutionary increases in male‐male competition were associated with male‐biased mortalities. This relationship is consistent between two measures of mating competition: social mating system and testis size. Second, as predicted by the parental cost hypothesis, females have significantly higher adult mortalities (mean ± SE, 0.364 ± 0.01) than males (0.328 ± 0.01). However, the mortality cost of parental care was only detectable in males, when the influence of mating competition was statistically controlled. Taken together, our results challenge the traditional explanation of female‐biased avian mortalities, because evolutionary changes in female care were unrelated to changes in mortality bias. The interspecific variation in avian mortality bias, as we show here, is driven by males, specifically via the costs of both mating competition and parental care. We also discuss alternative hypotheses for why most birds exhibit female‐biased mortalities, whereas in mammals male‐biased mortalities predominate. 相似文献

Thrichomys apereoides, a caviomorph rodent species common in a highly endemic area for Chagas disease in Brazil, may act as reservoir of the parasite. However, no information is available concerning its sibling species Thrichomys pachyurus, found in the Pantanal region, where Trypanosoma cruzi is found only in the enzootic cycle. We followed up the cross infection of these cryptic species with two isolates derived from naturally infected T. pachyurus and Thrichomys apereoides laurentius. No regional co-adaptation between Thrichomys species and the regional isolates were noticed. However, significant differences in the outcome of the infection were observed. T. a. laurentius was more resistant than T. pachyurus, as expressed by lower parasitemia and less histopathological damage. The routine biochemical markers used for laboratory rodents were unsuitable for follow up of infection in Thrichomys spp, since they did not correlate with the histopathological findings or allowed the kinetic follow-up of tissue colonization by the parasite. 相似文献

Male reproductive success is determined by the ability of males to gain sexual access to females and by their ability to fertilize ova. Among polygynous mammals, males differ markedly in their reproductive success, and a great deal of effort has been made to understand how selective forces have shaped traits that enhance male competitiveness both before and after copulation (i.e., sperm competition). However, the possibility that males also may differ in their fertility has been ignored under the assumption that male infertility is rare in natural populations because selection against it is likely to be strong. In the present study, we examined which semen traits correlate with male fertility in natural populations of Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus). We found no trade-offs between semen traits. Our analyses revealed strong associations between sperm production and sperm swimming velocity, sperm motility and proportion of morphologically normal spermatozoa, and sperm viability and acrosome integrity. These last two variables had the lowest coefficients of variation, suggesting that these traits have stabilized at high values and are unlikely to be related to fitness. In a fertility trial, our results show a large degree of variation in male fertility, and differences in fertility were determined mainly by sperm swimming velocity and by the proportion of morphologically normal sperm. We conclude that male fertility varies substantially in natural populations of Iberian red deer and that, when sperm numbers are equal, it is determined mainly by sperm swimming velocity and sperm morphology. 相似文献
