The metabolic performance of ectotherms is expected to be driven by the environment in which they live. Ecologically similar species with contrasting elevation distributions occurring in sympatry at mid‐elevations, provide good models for studying how physiological responses to temperature vary as a function of adaptation to different elevations. Under sympatry, at middle elevations, where divergent species ranges overlap, sympatric populations are expected to have similar thermal responses, suggesting similar local acclimation or adaptation, while observed differences would suggest adaptation to each species’ core range. We analysed the metabolic traits of sympatric species pairs from three ectotherm groups: reptiles (Reptilia: Lacertidae), amphibians (Amphibia: Salamandridae) and beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae), living at different elevations, in order to test how adaptation to different elevations affects metabolic responses to temperature. We experimentally tested the thermal response of respiration rate (RR) and estimated potential metabolic activity (PMA) at three temperature regimes surrounding the groups’ optimal activity body temperatures. RR was relatively similar among groups and showed a positive response to increasing temperature, which was more pronounced in the high‐elevation species of reptiles and beetles. Relative to RR, PMA displayed a stronger and more consistent positive response to increased temperature in all three groups. For all three groups, the average biochemical capacity for metabolism (PMA) was higher in the range‐restricted, high‐elevation species, and this difference increased at higher temperatures in a consistent manner. These results, indicating consistent pattern in three independently evolved animal groups, suggest a ubiquitous adaptive syndrome and represent a novel understanding of the mechanisms shaping spatial biodiversity patterns. Our results also highlight the importance of geographic patterns for the mechanistic understanding of adaptations in physiological traits, including species’ potential to respond/adapt to global climate changes.  相似文献

Palindromic and quasi-palindromic sequences are important DNA motifs found in various cis-acting genetic elements, but are also known to provoke different types of genetic alterations. The instability of such motifs is clearly size-related and depends on their potential to adopt secondary structures known as hairpins and cruciforms. Here we studied the influence of palindrome size on recombination between two directly repeated copies of the yeast CYC1 gene leading to the loss of the intervening sequence (“pop-out” recombination). We show that palindromes inserted either within one copy or between the two copies of the CYC1 gene become recombinogenic only when they attain a certain critical size and we estimate this critical size to be about 70 bp. With the longest palindrome used in this study (150 bp) we observed a more than 20-fold increase in the pop-out recombination. In the sae2/com1 mutant the palindrome-stimulated recombination was completely abolished. Suppression of palindrome recombinogenicity may be crucial for the maintenance of genetic stability in organisms containing a significant number of large palindromes in their genomes, like humans.  相似文献

Serotonin (5-HT) is a neurotransmitter which is supposed to play a key role during development. In the last few years 5-HT receptors have been cloned in many animal species, and there is evidence that different 5-HT receptors are also present in ascidians. Ascidians and vertebrates are both members of the phylum Chordata and both have a dorsal tubular central nervous system. Embryos of the ascidian Phallusia mammillata have been treated with WAY-100635, a potent and selective 5-HT(1A) receptor antagonist. The larvae developed from treated embryos showed a dramatic reduction of their anterior sensory vesicles and the pigment of two sensory organs, the ocellus and the otolith. Immunofluorescence experiments with an anti beta-tubulin monoclonal antibody specific for the neural system showed that the anterior neural system of treated animals was radically altered by the action of the drug in a dose-dependent way. These results suggest that 5-HT plays a role in the development of the neural system in ascidians and its action is mediated by receptors similar to the members of the 5-HT(1A) receptor subtype of mammals.  相似文献

In this study, life-history traits (maximum and average size, size at maturity and fecundity) of two congeneric smooth-hounds, Mustelus mustelus and Mustelus punctulatus, which share a geographical distribution and experience a similar fishing exploitation, were estimated and compared between species. The results indicated a lower maximum and average size, a lower size at maturity and a higher fecundity in M. punctulatus compared with those in M. mustelus. Considering that these two species co-occur in the same areas and are caught by the same fishing gears, the results indicate a higher vulnerability to exploitation of M. mustelus compared with that of M. punctulatus.  相似文献

To describe the serotonergic system in a tunicate larva, we cloned a gene encoding for tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), the rate-limiting enzyme in serotonin synthesis, in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis and studied its expression pattern during development. Ci-TPH expression was found from tailbud stage in the precursor cells of the visceral ganglion and in the tail. In the larva, TPH-expressing neurons formed two clusters in the anterior central nervous system at the level of the visceral ganglion. Moreover, we found Ci-TPH expression at the level of the muscle cells of the tail and suggested that this localisation might be at the level of neuro-muscolar junctions. Moreover, we discussed the involvement of serotonin in the control of larval locomotory activity.  相似文献

In metaphase Xenopus egg extracts, global microtubule growth is mainly promoted by two unrelated microtubule stabilizers, end-binding protein 1 (EB1) and XMAP215. Here, we explore their role and potential redundancy in the regulation of spindle assembly and function. We find that at physiological expression levels, both proteins are required for proper spindle architecture: Spindles assembled in the absence of EB1 or at decreased XMAP215 levels are short and frequently multipolar. Moreover, the reduced density of microtubules at the equator of ΔEB1 or ΔXMAP215 spindles leads to faulty kinetochore–microtubule attachments. These spindles also display diminished poleward flux rates and, upon anaphase induction, they neither segregate chromosomes nor reorganize into interphasic microtubule arrays. However, EB1 and XMAP215 nonredundantly regulate spindle assembly because an excess of XMAP215 can compensate for the absence of EB1, whereas the overexpression of EB1 cannot substitute for reduced XMAP215 levels. Our data indicate that EB1 could positively regulate XMAP215 by promoting its binding to the microtubules. Finally, we show that disruption of the mitosis-specific XMAP215–EB1 interaction produces a phenotype similar to that of either EB1 or XMAP215 depletion. Therefore, the XMAP215–EB1 interaction is required for proper spindle organization and chromosome segregation in Xenopus egg extracts.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the potential of phosphate (P) removal from wastewater by biosolids prepared by the immobilization of P-accumulating bacteria onto organic bentonite. Organic bentonite was prepared by treating bentonite clay with quaternary ammonium salt — cetyltrimetylammonium (CTA) bromide. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the bentonite was found to be 179.0 meq/100 g of the dry bentonite. The CTA occupied ca. 175% of the CEC. Modification of bentonite with CTA in amounts higher than 55% of the CEC resulted in the change of zeta potential of particles from negative to positive. Only in reactors containing organic bentonite samples occupied with 3.5 and 28% of the CEC was P efficiently removed from wastewater by combined adsorption and bacterial uptake in the biomass. Organic bentonite samples with higher CTA loadings (from 55 to 175% of the CEC) showed bactericidal effects. To enhance P removal from wastewater in the aerated biological system, biosolids consisting of P-accumulating bacteria and organic bentonite can be used, but special attention should be given to the configuration of sorbed CTA molecules and its potential desorption.  相似文献
