Phenotypic plasticity of wing size and shape of Drosophila simulans was analyzed across the entire range of viable developmental temperatures with Procrustes geometric morphometric method. In agreement with previous studies, size clearly decreases when temperature increases. Wing shape variation was decomposed into its allometric (24%) and nonallometric (76%) components, and both were shown to involve landmarks located throughout the entire wing blade. The allometric component basically revealed a progressive, monotonous variation along the temperature. Surprisingly, nonallometric shape changes were highly similar at both extremes of the thermal range, suggesting that stress, rather than temperature per se, is the key developmental factor affecting wing shape. 相似文献

Background
Algorithms for bone mineral density (BMD) management in HIV-infected patients are lacking. Our objective was to assess how often a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan should be performed by assessing time of progression to osteopenia/osteoporosis.Methods
All DXA scans performed between 2000 and 2009 from HIV-infected patients with at least two DXA were included. Time to an event (osteopenia and osteoporosis) was assessed using the Kaplan–Meier method. Strata (tertiles) were defined using baseline minimum T scores. Differences between strata in time to an event were compared with the log-rank test.Results
Of 391 patients (1,639 DXAs), 49.6% had osteopenia and 21.7% osteoporosis at their first DXA scan. Of the 112 (28.6%) with normal BMD, 35.7% progressed to osteopenia; median progression time was 6.7 years. These patients were stratified: “low-risk" (baseline minimum T score >−0.2 SD), “middle-risk" (between −0.2 and −0.6 SD), and “high-risk" (from −0.6 to −1 SD); median progression time to osteopenia was 8.7, >7.2, and 1.7 years, respectively (p<0.0001). Of patients with osteopenia, 23.7% progressed to osteoporosis; median progression time was >8.5 years. Progression time was >8.2 years in “low-risk" tertile (T score between −1.1 and −1.6 SD), >8.5 years in “middle-risk" (between −1.6 and −2), and 3.2 years in “high-risk" (from −2 to −2.4) (p<0.0001).Conclusions
Our results may help to define the BMD testing interval. The lowest T score tertiles would suggest recommending a subsequent DXA in 1–2 years; in the highest tertiles, ≥6 years. Early intervention in patients with bone demineralization could reduce fracture–related morbidity/mortality. 相似文献995.

In a previous paper we have shown that epsilon-(phenoxyalkanecarboxylyl)-L-Lys conjugates are potent inhibitors of amino acid transport systems and that it is possible to modulate the uptake inhibition by hydrophobic or hydrophilic additions in the 4-position of the aromatic ring (J.F. Chollet, C. Delétage, M. Faucher, L. Miginiac, J.L. Bonnemain [1997] Biochem Biophys Acta 1336: 331-341). In this report we demonstrate that epsilon-(2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetyl)-L-Lys (2,4D-Lys), one of the largest molecules of the series and one of the most potent inhibitors, is a highly permeant conjugate. Uptake of 2,4D-Lys by broad bean (Vicia faba) leaf discs is mediated by an active carrier system (Km1 = 0.2 mM; Vmax1 = 2.4 nmol x cm(-2) x h(-1) at pH 5.0) complemented by an important diffusive component. Among the compounds tested (neutral, basic, and acidic amino acids, auxin, glutathione, and sugars), only the aromatic amino acids clearly compete with 2,4D-Lys. The conjugate accumulates in the vein network, is exported toward the growing organs, and exhibits a distribution pattern different from that of the herbicide moiety. However, over time 2,4D-Lys progressively splits into 2,4D and lysine. Analyses by high-performance liquid chromatography and liquid scintillation spectrometry of the phloem sap collected from the castor bean system, used as a systemy test, indicate decreasing capacities of 2,4D, 2,4D-Lys, and glyphosate, respectively, to move from the epidermis cell wall to the sieve element. Our results show that it is possible to design synthesis of large-size xenobiotics (approximately 350 D) with a lipophilic pole, exhibiting high mobility within the vascular system. 相似文献

Bacillus subtilis strain 14B was used to produce a novel antimicrobial peptide (bacteriocin) called Bac 14B. Pure bacteriocin was obtained
after heat and acidic treatments (80°C and pH 4), precipitation by ammonium sulfate, and chromatography on Sephadex G-50 and
Mono Q Sepharose columns. Based on MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry analysis, purified Bac 14B is a monomer protein with a molecular
mass of 20110.13 Da. N-terminal sequencing allowed for the straightforward identification of its first 12 residues, which
were of a pure bacteriocin. It also revealed that this bacteriocin contained a unique sequence, namely M-L-K-A-N-L-Q-N-P-L-N-A,
suggesting the identification of a novel compound. Bac 14B was stable for 1 h at temperatures up to 80°C and pH of 4 ∼ 8.
It also proved sensitive to various proteases, which demonstrated its protein nature. Bac 14B displayed a bacteriolytical
mode of action and a broad range of inhibitory spectra toward Gram-positive and -negative pathogens. Interestingly, based
on conventional agronomic seed vigor parameters, the application of Bac 14B (500 activity units/mL) to various crops revealed
that this bacteriocin was a potent exogenous enhancer of growth that stimulated the seedling vigor of tomatoes and muskmelons.
Compared to those of the control, the germination percentage, shoot weight, shoot height, and root length were all significantly
enhanced in Bac 14B-treated plant seeds. Bac 14B also exhibited effective disinfectant properties against a wide range of
seedborne diseases and significant effects on the control of damping off diseases, particularly at the pregermination stage.
It also proved to be effective against root rot diseases caused by Alternaria solani and other bacterial seedborne pathogens such as wilt diseases. The findings indicate that Bac 14B is the first B. subtilis-produced bacteriocin ever reported to exhibit such promising biological properties. 相似文献

Pathogen access to host nutrients in infected tissues is fundamental for pathogen growth and virulence, disease progression, and infection control. However, our understanding of this crucial process is still rather limited because of experimental and conceptual challenges. Here, we used proteomics, microbial genetics, competitive infections, and computational approaches to obtain a comprehensive overview of Salmonella nutrition and growth in a mouse typhoid fever model. The data revealed that Salmonella accessed an unexpectedly diverse set of at least 31 different host nutrients in infected tissues but the individual nutrients were available in only scarce amounts. Salmonella adapted to this situation by expressing versatile catabolic pathways to simultaneously exploit multiple host nutrients. A genome-scale computational model of Salmonella in vivo metabolism based on these data was fully consistent with independent large-scale experimental data on Salmonella enzyme quantities, and correctly predicted 92% of 738 reported experimental mutant virulence phenotypes, suggesting that our analysis provided a comprehensive overview of host nutrient supply, Salmonella metabolism, and Salmonella growth during infection. Comparison of metabolic networks of other pathogens suggested that complex host/pathogen nutritional interfaces are a common feature underlying many infectious diseases. 相似文献

The C↔U substitution types of RNA editing have been observed frequently in organellar genomes of land plants. Although various attempts have been made to explain why such a seemingly inefficient genetic mechanism would have evolved, no satisfactory explanation exists in our view. Range shifts of many species are now documented as a response to global warming. But whether these observed changes are occurring fast enough remains uncertain and hardly quantifiable. Here, we developed a simple framework to measure change in community composition in response to climate warming. This framework is based on a community temperature index (CTI) that directly reflects, for a given species assemblage, the balance between low- and high-temperature dwelling species. Using data from the French breeding bird survey, we first found a strong increase in CTI over the last two decades revealing that birds are rapidly tracking climate warming. This increase corresponds to a 91 km northward shift in bird community composition, which is much higher than previous estimates based on changes in species range edges. During the same period, temperature increase corresponds to a 273 km northward shift in temperature. Change in community composition was thus insufficient to keep up with temperature increase: birds are lagging approximately 182 km behind climate warming. Our method is applicable to any taxa with large-scale survey data, using either abundance or occurrence data.
