The topography of the Sado estuary, the second largest of Portugal, comprises the outer estuary inside the entrance channel
and the inner estuary, on the inward side of which begins the tidal mudflats. The outer estuary subtidal area covers approximately
70 km2 and presents a series of longitudinal intertidal sandbanks, separating a northern and a southern channel.
A benthic survey was undertaken in the outer estuary during June 1986, in which superficial sediments and macrofauna were
sampled at 133 locations. The environmental variables measured in the superficial sediments were the temperature, the granulometric
structure, the silt, sand and the gravel content, and the total organic matter content. The primary macrofauna biological
variables studied were the species composition, abundance and biomass, calculated on wet, dry and ash-free dry weight.
The granulometry and the organic content of superficial sediments agreed with the transient and the residual currents velocity
field, simulated in a 2-D hydrodynamic model previously elaborated for the outer estuary. The northern channel superficial
sediments showed higher silt and total organic matter content, while the model also suggested lower transient and residual
velocities, water flow and shear stress in this channel.
The distribution patterns of the subtidal macrofauna were separated into two main groups of species, one comprising taxa essentially
settled near the estuarine mouth and the other inwards. Biological primary variables also showed consistent patterns, comparable
to other Portuguese estuaries. The major subtidal benthic biotopes were obtained through classification analysis and related

Aim
Land use is the most pervasive driver of biodiversity loss. Predicting its impact on species richness (SR) is often based on indicators of habitat loss. However, the degradation of habitats, especially through land-use intensification, also affects species. Here, we evaluate whether an integrative metric of land-use intensity, the human appropriation of net primary production, is correlated with the decline of SR in used landscapes across the globe.Location

Based on species range maps (spatial resolution: 20 km × 20 km) and an area-of-habitat approach, we calibrated a “species–energy model” by correlating the SR of three groups of vertebrates with net primary production and biogeographical covariables in “wilderness” areas (i.e., those where available energy is assumed to be still at pristine levels). We used this model to project the difference between pristine SR and the SR corresponding to the energy remaining in used landscapes (i.e., SR loss expected owing to human energy extraction outside wilderness areas). We validated the projected species loss by comparison with the realized and impending loss reconstructed from habitat conversion and documented by national Red Lists.Results
Species–energy models largely explained landscape-scale variation of mapped SR in wilderness areas (adjusted R2-values: 0.79–0.93). Model-based projections of SR loss were lower, on average, than reconstructed and documented ones, but the spatial patterns were correlated significantly, with stronger correlation in mammals (Pearson's r = 0.68) than in amphibians (r = 0.60) and birds (r = 0.57).Main conclusions

The hemolymph of each noctuid species successfully parasitized by Chelonus near curvimaculatus possessed a parasitism-specific protein (PSP) previously identified in host T. ni (Insect Biochem. 19:445; 21:845). Expression of PSP occurred in a stage-specific manner in the stadium during which the host undergoes precocious metamorphosis. The appearance of the protein was not due to nutritional stress associated with parasitism of hosts, since starved nonparasitized larvae did not produce the protein, or to low juvenile hormone titers occurring in precociously metamorphosing hosts, but rather was dependent on the presence of the endoparasite larva. Results of in vivo incorporation experiments with [35S]-methionine showed that synthesis and subsequent appearance of the protein in the hemolymph of parasitized hosts was abrogated by prior surgical removal of endoparasite. Immunoprecipitation analysis of proteins from C. near curvimaculatus larvae cultured in vitro using antibodies specific to PSP indicated that the source of the protein was the endoparasite. Synthesis of PSP by the endoparasitic larvae with its subsequent secretion into the hemocoel of hosts was specific to the advanced stages of parasite development prior to its egression from the host. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Gulls, as largely flexible opportunistic individuals, have been increasingly breeding in many cities around the world, but it is still unclear whether urban habitats are of equal or higher quality than traditional natural habitats or represent an ecological trap with immediate reproductive benefits but longer-term detrimental consequences to health. Here we present a study of breeding parameters (nest density, egg dimensions, clutch size, hatching success and adult body condition) and physiological parameters (erythrocyte sedimentation rate, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, haemoglobin concentration and measurements of oxidative stress) as indicators of the general health condition of Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis adults and chicks from natural and urban colonies. Yellow-legged Gulls in the largest urban area (Porto) laid smaller eggs and clutches, showed a significantly lower occurrence of inflammatory processes in chicks, and showed a slower early chick growth than in the natural colony of Deserta. This suggests that urban gulls might be facing important trade-offs between the advantages of breeding in lower density urban colonies, with fewer intraspecific interactions and a lower disease transmission probability, and the disadvantages of having an anthropogenic diet usually lower in nutritional value. 相似文献

Environmentally cued hatching has been well-documented in amphibians in response to a wide range of abiotic and biotic factors. The hatching of terrestrial amphibian eggs in response to flooding may be basal within the group, but amphibian lineages in tropical Asia and sub-Saharan Africa have not received as much attention as their Neotropical counterparts. We investigated submergence-induced hatching in Feihyla hansenae, a Rhacophorid tree frog with terrestrial eggs. We quantified natural rates of clutch submergence at our study site in Thailand. Using submergence experiments, we found that embryos are capable of hatching early to escape flooding, and that failure to hatch results in mortality. Among the embryos that were able to hatch early, only the earliest, youngest hatchlings experienced a trade-off in body size that persisted for 6 days, while later, older hatchlings were not significantly smaller than spontaneous hatchlings under control conditions. By incorporating our natural and experimental data into Monte Carlo methods to simulate and compare survival probabilities with and without hatching plasticity, we found an overall 3.1% increase in submergence survival due to hatching plasticity. Our findings support the idea that flooding-induced hatching is widespread across amphibians with terrestrial eggs and highlight the importance of researching understudied tropical regions. As climate change is projected to affect rainfall patterns, the ability of embryos to escape abiotic egg-stage threats may be an indicator of species' ability to flexibly navigate a changing environment. 相似文献

Tris (Tris(hydroxymethyl)amino methane), a compound often used as a buffer in microalgal culture media, sustains active bacterial growth in non-axenic microalgal cultures when sodium phosphate is present. The low pH levels caused by bacterial growth and probably the depletion of phosphorus in the medium caused the collapse ofPhaeodactylum tricornutum cultures resulting in a reduction of microalgal growth from 32 x 106 to 1.1 x 106 cells ml–1.
