Freshwater shrimp dominate the faunal biomass of many headwater tropical streams: however, their role in community organization is unclear. Enclosure/exclosure experiments in a montane Puerto Rican stream examined direct and indirect effects of two dominant taxa of atyid (Atyidae) shrimp, Atya lanipes Holthuis and Xiphocaris elongata Guerin-Meneville. Both shrimp taxa caused significant reductions in sediment cover on rock substrata, reducing sedimentation and enhancing algal biovolume on clay tiles in cages. When tiles incubated in shrimp exclosures for 2 wks were placed outside of cages, atyid shrimp removed 100% of the sediment cover within a 30 min observation period. Atyid shrimp appear to play an important role in stream recovery after high discharge events by rapidly removing sediments and detritus deposited on benthic substrata in pools. We evaluated the mechanism by which A. lanipes influences algae and benthic insects by comparing patterns of algal biomass, taxonomic composition, and insect abundance between shrimp-exclusion and shrimp-presence treatments both with and without manual sediment removal. The shrimp exclusion treatment without manual sediment removal bad significantly lower algal biomass and greater sedimentation than all other treatments. The treatment in which shrimp were excluded but sediment was manually removed, however, accrued almost the same algal biovolume as the shrimp enclosure treatment, supporting the hypothesis that sediment removal enhances the biovolume of understory algal taxa. Algal community composition was similar between stream bottom bedrock exposed to natural densities of shrimp and all experimental treatments for both Atya and Xiphocaris: a diatom community strongly dominated (78–95%) by the adnate taxon, Achnanthes lanceolata Breb ex. Kutz. Atyid shrimp are important in determining the distribution and abundance of benthic insects through both direct and indirect effects. Sessile, retreat-building chironomid larvae (Chironomidae: Diptera) are negatively affected by both A. lanipes and X. elongata, through direct removal by foraging activities and/or indirectly through depression of sediment resources available to larvae for the construction of retreats. In constrast, the mobile grazer, Cloeodes maculipes (Baetidae: Ephemeroptera) was not adversely affected and atyid shrimp have the potential to exert positive indirect effects on this taxon by facilitating its exploitation of algal resources and/or through enhancement of understory algal food resources through sediment removal.  相似文献

To characterize the deep subsurface environment of Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site, rock samples were taken from tunnels U 12b, U12g, U12p, and U 12n, which varied in depth from 50 m to 450 m and in gravimetric moisture content from 4% to 27%. Values for total count, viable count, biomass, Simpson diversity, equitability, similarity coefficient, and number of distinct colony types indicated microbiological variability between samples. Viable counts ranged from less than 1 × 101 to 2.4 × 105 CFU g dry wt–1 of rock. Direct counts and enumeration based on phospholipid determination indicated larger numbers of cells g dry wt-1 of rock than viable counts. Simpson diversity indices, equitability, and numbers of distinct colony types varied from 3.00 to 8.05, 0.21 to 0.89, and 7 to 19, respectively, and indicated heterogeneity between samples. Each distinct morphotype was purified and characterized. Gram reaction, morphology, metal and antibiotic resistances, and metabolic activities of each isolate confirmed spatial variability among microbiota isolated from different locations. Most probable numbers of nitrifying, sulfur oxidizing, and sulfur-reducing bacteria were below the limit of detection in all samples, while the numbers of nitrogen fixing bacteria ranged from below the level of detection to 7.8 × 102 cells g dry wt–1 of rock sample, and the numbers of dentrifying bacteria ranged from below the level of detection to greater than 1.6 × 103 cells g dry wt–1 of rock sample. Throughout southeastern North America, the annual morning glory Ipomoea purpurea exhibits a polymorphism at a locus that influences the intensity of floral pigmentation. Previous studies have shown that when rare, the homozygous white genotype has a greater selfing rate than the homozygous dark genotype. In the absence of pollen discounting (a reduction in transmission of pollen to other plants by genotypes that exhibit increased selfing) and inbreeding depression, this increased selfing rate should favor the white allele. Experiments reported here confirm that the white genotype has elevated selfing rates when rare but indicate pollen discounting is not associated with elevated selfing. Rather, white genotypes contribute more pollen to the outcross pollen pool. The disparity between genotypes in both selfing rates and success at pollen contribution to other plants disappears at intermediate to high frequencies of the white allele. Pollinator movements are consistent with the pattern of selfing. These results suggest that elevated selfing and enhanced success at pollen donation contribute to maintenance of the white allele in natural populations of morning glories.  相似文献

Identifying the drivers of community structure and dynamics is a major pursuit in ecology. Emphasis is typically placed on the importance of local scale interactions when attempting to explain these fundamental ecological patterns. However, regional scale phenomena are also important predictors. The importance of regional scale context should be more evident in assemblages where multiple species are close to their range margins. Here, we test the importance of regional scale context using data from a temperate forest plot that contains two species groups – one near its northern range limit and one near its southern range limit. We show the proximity of species to their southern or northern range margins is linked to local scale co-occurrence, similarity in gene expression responses to a key environmental driver, demographic performance and inter-specific variation in conspecific negative density dependence. In sum, many of the key local scale patterns and processes of interest to community ecologists are linked to biogeographic context that is frequently ignored.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of graded levels (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 g/kg) of dry Sea buckthorn (SB) berries on growth performance, gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development, jejunal histomorphology, bird antioxidant status and caecal short-chain fatty acid concentration when fed to female Ross 308 broiler chickens. In addition, expression of cytokine biomarker genes in the jejunum was evaluated. The five experimental diets were fed from 7 to 21 days age to 8 pens (two birds in each) following randomisation. Feeding SB did not influence bird growth performance (p > .05). There was a linear decrease in butyric, acetic and valeric acid concentrations in caecal digesta (p < .05) and a decrease (p < .05) in crypt depth. The expression of IFNG and CD40LG responded quadratically (p < .05), peaking at 6–9 g/kg dietary inclusion of SB, respectively. Other studied variables were not affected by dietary SB inclusion (p > .05). Feeding dry SB berries up to 12 g/kg of diet did not improve the zootechnical variables of healthy commercial-strain broilers in this study.  相似文献

Recent research has indicated that old, individually housed monkeys show little interest in novel objects. Yet unanswered is whether this effect is caused primarily by age or housing condition. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of social living in promoting responsiveness to objects. We measured the rates of object manipulation in older animals, assessed responsiveness over time to particular objects as a measure of habituation, and examined social influences on object use. Several social groups of rhesus monkeys that contained older adults were studied. These groups were housed in indoor pens or in an outdoor enclosure, and all monkeys had continuous access to a variety of objects in their home environment. In contrast to previous studies of individually housed monkeys, our group-housed monkeys showed sustained interest in objects. Old monkeys manipulated objects extensively, and this response was all the more significant, given that the objects were not novel. Monkeys housed in an outdoor enclosure showed object manipulation patterns that were not different from monkeys housed in indoor pens. However, females exhibited much higher object-related responses than males. Social facilitation played a role in the reactions of some monkeys to objects. Patterns of social facilitation as well as avoidance were present in two of the three indoor groups that were observed. Failure to manipulate objects in rhesus macaques appears to be more a function of individual housing than of old age. Factors such as environmental complexity, social needs, and early experience should be considered in order to understand why individually housed rhesus monkeys are unresponsive to objects. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

    The fluid dynamics of sperm motility near both rigid and elastic walls is studied using the immersed boundary method. Simulations of both single and interacting organisms are presented. In particular, we find that nearby organisms originally undulating with a 90° phase shift may adjust their relative swimming velocities and phase-lock. Comparisons with previous analytical results are also discussed. The tendency of a near-wall to attract organisms is demonstrated.  相似文献

    Growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) stimulate proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC). IGF-l bioactivity is modulated by high-affinity binding proteins (IGFBP) which are important regulators of these processes. Procine vascular SMC synthesize IGFBP-2 and IGFBP-4 in vitro. In the present study, levels of IGFBP-2 in conditioned media (CM) were increased approximately 1.6 to 2.2-fold when cells were exposed to PDGF (20 ng.ml) or insulin (5 μg/ml) for 24 hr following a 24 hr incubation in serum-free media, or following a 72 hr exposure to either growth factor. Similar increases in IGFBP-2 mRNA levels were observed. Exposure of cells to PDGF for 24 hr without prior serum deprivation resulted in smaller (47 ± 11%) increases in IGFBP-2 protein levels but failed to alter mRNA levels. IGF-1, FGF-b? and EGF failed to increase IGFBP-2 using either experimental paradigm. In contrast, IGFBP-2 protein levels were consistently decreased (75 ± 14%) after 72 hr of exposure to IGF-II without corresponding decreases in IGFBP-2 mRNA levels. Immunoprecipitation of [35S] methionine-labeled IGFBP-2 indicated that this decrease was not due to a decrease in synthesis of IGFBP-2. Immunoblot analysis of CM from cells treated with IGF-II indicated that the decrease in intact protein corresponded with an increase in two non-IGF binding IGFBP-2 fragments of 22 and 14 kD. Increased abundance of these fragements was also observed following IGF-I exposure, although corresponding decreases in intact IGFBP-2 were not usually observed. The relative abundance of these fragments did not appear to be affected by treatment with PDGF or insulin. In contrast to IGFBP-2, regulation of the levels of IGFBP-4 in CM did not appear to be altered by serum deprivation. Insulin consistently increased IGFBP-4 mRNA and protein levels under all situations. PDGF tended to increase IGFBP-4 protein levels, although this effect was less consistent and not as great as the increase observe with insulin. Treatment with IGF-I or -ll consistently decreased IGFBP-4 levels in CM but tended to increase their mRNA levels under all situations. These data indicate that insulin, PDGF, and the IGFs regulate both IGFBP-2 and IGFBP-4. While PDGF and insulin stimulate IGFBP-2 and 4 synthesis, the IGFs appear to activate protease(s) which regulate IGFBP-2 and -4 levels post-translationally. The regulation of IGFBP-2 levels by each of these mechanisms appears to be amplified by serum deprivation, but this is not observed with IGFBP-4. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
