An endothelial cell monolayer separates interstitia from blood and lymph, and determines the bidirectional transfer of solutes and macromolecules across these biological spaces. We review advances in transport modalities across these endothelial barriers. Glucose is a major fuel for the brain and peripheral tissues, and insulin acts on both central and peripheral tissues to promote whole‐body metabolic signalling and anabolic activity. Blood‐brain barrier endothelial cells display stringent tight junctions and lack pinocytic activity. Delivery of blood glucose and insulin to the brain occurs through their respective carrier (Glucose transporter 1) and receptor (insulin receptor), enacting bona fide transcytosis. At supraphysiological concentrations, insulin is also likely transferred by fluid phase cellular uptake and paracellular transport, especially in peripheral microvascular endothelia. The lymphatic microvasculature also transports insulin but in this case from tissues to lymph and therefrom to blood. This serves to end the hormone's action and to absorb highly concentrated subcutaneously injected insulin in diabetic individuals. The former function may involve receptor‐mediated transcytosis into lymphatic endothelial cells, the latter fluid phase uptake and paracellular transport. Lymphatic capillaries also mediate carrier‐dependent transport of other nutrients and macromolecules. These findings challenge the notion that lymphatic capillaries only transport macromolecules through intercellular flaps. 相似文献

An interesting mutation affecting the Apo-B gene, R3500Q, is known to display variable geographical distribution in the world and is mostly implicated in the pathogenesis of Familial
Hypercholesterolemia (FH). The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of this mutation in the Lebanese population
and compare it to the available international literature. DNA from 160 unrelated healthy donors from our HLA-bank was used
and the ApoB genotype was determined using the CardioVascular Disease (CVD) StripAssay (this assay is based on a Polymerase
Chain Reaction-Reverse Hybridization technique). The R3500Q mutation was not observed in the general Lebanese population. Since the mutation frequency is elevated in Central Europe
and tends to decrease as one moves east and south, it disappears completely in the Mediterranean regions such as Spain, Turkey
and Israel; therefore, it is rather expected to be absent in Lebanon as well. Our report adds a valuable piece of information
regarding this mutation in an Arab country and paves the way for future research involving patients diagnosed with FH in order

The impact of certain exogenous factor (socio-economic, ecological) has been investigated with special attention paid to the parents' living standard, and number of family members on some anthropometric parameters like: body height, body mass, chest circumference, upper leg circumference, upper arm circumference, sitting height, arm length, leg length, pelvis width, shoulders width, lenght of head and with of head on the sample of 698 boys aged 11 to 16 (17) years in the Tuzla region (the northeastern Bosnia, Western Balkan peninsula). Anthropometric measurements have been carried out using methodology proposed by the International Biological program (IBP). The results of these investigations have shown that there is a certain impact of the socio-economic conditions on the growth and development of boys. Children from families that have better living standard are, as a rule, taller, which is indicated by the statistical significant differences (P > 0.01). This trend indicates also value of Body Mass Index (BMI), which is in younger children from the families with lower living standard 16, while in the same category in the children from the families with better living standard it has value 18.5. The real impact of living conditions on the dynamics of development could be the best seen in the period of puberty. The number of children in the family has negative relationship with anthropometric features. Statistically significant differences (P > 0.001) have been detected in numerous analysed features in families with one or two children in comparison with families with three, four, or five children. Therefore, BMI has been significantly lower (16) in children from families with several children, while in the families with one child in the same growth class (11 years) it was significantly higher (17.4). Similar value of BMI (17.9) have children from the families with five children and which are 17 years old. Besides socio-economic conditions, high level of environmental pollution which is typical for Tuzla region for a long time, has also significant impact on the growth and development of children. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Animal and human studies demonstrate anatomical and functional links between the vestibular nuclei and the circadian timing system. This promotes the hypothesis of a circadian rhythm of vestibular function. The objective of this study was to evaluate the vestibular function through the vestibulo-ocular reflex using a rotatory chair at different times of the day to assess circadian rhythmicity of vestibular function. Two identical studies evaluating temporal variation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were performed, the first in young adults (age: 22.4 ± 1.5 y), and the second in older adults (70.7 ± 4.7 y). The slow phase velocity and time constant of the VOR were evaluated in six separate test sessions, i.e., 02:00, 06:00, 10:00, 14:00, 18:00, and 22:00 h. In both studies, markers of circadian rhythmicity (temperature, fatigue, and sleepiness) displayed expected usual temporal variation. In young adults, the time constant of the VOR showed variation throughout the day (p < .005), being maximum 12:25 h (06:00 h test session) before the acrophase of temperature circadian rhythm. In older adults, the slow phase velocity and time constant also displayed temporal variation (p < .05). Maximum values were recorded at 10:35 h (06:00 h test session) before the acrophase of temperature circadian rhythm. The present study demonstrates that vestibular function is not constant throughout the day. The implication of the temporal variation in vestibular system in equilibrium potentially exposes the elderly, in particular, to differential risk during the 24 h of losing balance and falling. 相似文献

Fungi are considered to cause grapevine trunk diseases such as esca that result in wood degradation. For instance, the basidiomycete Fomitiporia mediterranea (Fmed) is overabundant in white rot, a key type of wood-necrosis associated with esca. However, many bacteria colonize the grapevine wood too, including the white rot. In this study, we hypothesized that bacteria colonizing grapevine wood interact, possibly synergistically, with Fmed and enhance the fungal ability to degrade wood. We isolated 237 bacterial strains from esca-affected grapevine wood. Most of them belonged to the families Xanthomonadaceae and Pseudomonadaceae. Some bacterial strains that degrade grapevine-wood components such as cellulose and hemicellulose did not inhibit Fmed growth in vitro. We proved that the fungal ability to degrade wood can be strongly influenced by bacteria inhabiting the wood. This was shown with a cellulolytic and xylanolytic strain of the Paenibacillus genus, which displays synergistic interaction with Fmed by enhancing the degradation of wood structures. Genome analysis of this Paenibacillus strain revealed several gene clusters such as those involved in the expression of carbohydrate-active enzymes, xylose utilization and vitamin metabolism. In addition, certain other genetic characteristics of the strain allow it to thrive as an endophyte in grapevine and influence the wood degradation by Fmed. This suggests that there might exist a synergistic interaction between the fungus Fmed and the bacterial strain mentioned above, enhancing grapevine wood degradation. Background
The translation of research into practices has been incomplete. Organizational readiness for change (ORC) is a potential facilitator of effective knowledge translation (KT). However we know little about the best way to assess ORC. Therefore, we sought to systematically review ORC measurement instruments.Methods
We searched for published studies in bibliographic databases (Pubmed, Embase, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Web of Science, etc.) up to November 1st, 2012. We included publications that developed ORC measures and/or empirically assessed ORC using an instrument at the organizational level in the health care context. We excluded articles if they did not refer specifically to ORC, did not concern the health care domain or were limited to individual-level change readiness. We focused on identifying the psychometric properties of instruments that were developed to assess readiness in an organization prior to implementing KT interventions in health care. We used the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing to assess the psychometric properties of identified ORC measurement instruments.Findings
We found 26 eligible instruments described in 39 publications. According to the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, 18 (69%) of a total of 26 measurement instruments presented both validity and reliability criteria. The Texas Christian University –ORC (TCU-ORC) scale reported the highest instrument validity with a score of 4 out of 4. Only one instrument, namely the Modified Texas Christian University – Director version (TCU-ORC-D), reported a reliability score of 2 out of 3. No information was provided regarding the reliability and validity of five (19%) instruments.Conclusion
Our findings indicate that there are few valid and reliable ORC measurement instruments that could be applied to KT in the health care sector. The TCU-ORC instrument presents the best evidence in terms of validity testing. Future studies using this instrument could provide more knowledge on its relevance to diverse clinical contexts. 相似文献377.

In this study, we investigated the antioxidant and protective properties of date fruit aqueous extract (DFAE) on trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-induced nephrotoxicity in rat. Oral administration of TCA as drinking water (0.5 and 2 g/L) daily for 2 months caused nephrotoxicity as evident by elevated levels of plasma creatinine, urea, and uric acid. Activity of antioxidant enzymes, catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), was decreased, whereas superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) level were increased along with histopathological injuries. The oral administration of DFAE (4 mL/kg/day) to TCA-treated groups proved some significant correction by increasing the antioxidant activity of the CAT and GPx enzymes and normalizing the SOD activity and the MDA level (p?<?0.05). It also protected kidney's histology and normalized the functions of this organ. It could be concluded that DFAE has a protective role against TCA-induced oxidative stress in rat, thereby protecting the renal tissue from TCA-induced damage. 相似文献

Atrazine is currently the most widely used herbicide in agriculture with lots of adverse effects on human health. Curcumin is a polyphenol known for its antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and anticancer properties. In the present study, the protective effect of curcumin on atrazin‐intoxicated rats is evaluated. Toxicity was induced by oral administration of atrazine (400 mg/kg/day) for 3 weeks. Curcumin at a dose of 400 mg/kg/day was given simultaneously by oral route. Redox status, mitochondrial function, 8‐hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8‐OHdG) level by immunoassay, and caspace‐3 expression by immunohistochemistry were evaluated. Curcumin showed significant cardiac protection with improvement of redox status, mitochondrial function, 8‐OHdG level, caspase‐3 immunoreactivity, and cardiac muscle degeneration. From this current study, it can be concluded that administration of curcumin improved atrazine‐induced cardiotoxicity through its modulatory effect on redox status, mitochondrial function, and caspase‐3 expression. 相似文献

Fusarium species threaten wheat crops around the world and cause global losses. The global trend is toward using biological materials such as selenium (Se) in nano form to control these fungi. Bulk selenium is toxic and harmful at high doses; however, selenium nanoparticles are safe; therefore, the aim of this study to employ the biological selenium nanoparticles (BioSeNPs) synthesized by Lactobacillus acidophilus ML14 in controlling wheat crown and root rot diseases (CRDs) induced by Fusarium spp., especially Fusarium culmorum and Fusarium graminearum, and their reflection on the growth and productivity of wheat. The ability of BioSeNPs to suppress the development and propagation of F. culmorum and F. graminearum and the CRDs incidence were also investigated. The obtained BioSeNPs were spherical with a size of 46 nm and a net charge of –23.48. The BioSeNPs significantly scavenged 88 and 92% of DPP? and ABT? radicals and successfully inhibited the fungal growth in the range of 20–40 µg/mL; these biological activities were related to the small size of BioSeNPs and the phenolic content in their suspension. Under greenhouse conditions, the wheat supplemented with BioSeNPs (100 µg/mL) was significantly reduced the incidence of CRDs by 75% and considerably enhanced plant growth, grain quantity and quality by 5–40%. Also, photosynthetic pigments and gas exchange parameters were significantly increased as compared to chemical selenium nanoparticles (Che-SeNPs) and control. This study results could be recommended the use of BioSeNPs (100 µg/mL) in reducing CRDs incidence and severity in wheat plants, enhancing their tolerance with drought and heat stress, and increasing their growth and productivity as compared to control and Che-SeNPs. 相似文献
