Globodera rostochiensis and Rhizoctonia solani are the most important growth limiting factors influencing potato production in Iran. The effects of inoculation with Potato Cyst Nematodes (PCN) (0, 50, 75 and 100 cysts/3.5?kg soil) and R. solani (with or without inoculation) on potato growth and development were investigated in cultivars Santé and Marfona. Inoculation with R. solani induced severe damage, especially when inoculation was accompanied with high density of PCN. The damage caused by R. solani tended to increase with an increase in PCN density, especially in Marfona. In Santé, number of stems or branches per plant significantly increased by inoculation with R. solani, while in Marfona it was significantly affected either by R. solani inoculation or PCN density. In Santé, number of stolons per plant was significantly increased by PCN, but not by R. solani. In Marfona, however, the number of stolons per plant was significantly affected either by R. solani inoculation or by presence of PCN, but not affected by PCN density. The general effect of R. solani or PCN inoculation treatments on shoot, below-ground and total dry weight of potato was significant, but strongly affected by cultivar. In general, our study supports the synergistic interaction between R. solani and PCN and its moderation by the use of a resistant cultivar such as Santé. 相似文献

The aerobiology of fungi in the genus Fusarium is poorly understood. Recent work has highlighted the role of Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) in the movement of fusaria in the lower atmosphere. Here, we extend this work by examining the relationship between the length of atmospheric sampling intervals with autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and the recovery of fusaria. UAVs were equipped with an array of eight microbe-sampling devices with four “inner” sampling arms and four “outer” sampling arms. Each set of arms was used to collect consecutive aerobiological samples during 10 min sampling periods at 100 m above ground level at the Kentland Farm in Blacksburg, Virginia. Fifty-one flights (102 consecutive sampling intervals) were conducted in 2010 and 2011. A correlation analysis showed that the counts of fusaria did not vary between the inner and outer sampling arms from consecutive sampling period of 10 min (r = 0.93, P < 0.001), and the frequency of colony counts had similar distributions for samples from the inner and outer sampling arms. An analysis of the temporal variation in the collections of Fusarium showed that the similarity between collections decreased over time. This work supports the idea that atmospheric populations of fusaria are well mixed, and large changes in the recovery of fusaria in the lower atmosphere may be attributed to large-scale phenomena (e.g., LCSs) operating across varying temporal and spatial scales. The human voice provides a rich source of information about individual attributes such as body size, developmental stability and emotional state. Moreover, there is evidence that female voice characteristics change across the menstrual cycle. A previous study reported that women speak with higher fundamental frequency (F0) in the high-fertility compared to the low-fertility phase. To gain further insights into the mechanisms underlying this variation in perceived attractiveness and the relationship between vocal quality and the timing of ovulation, we combined hormone measurements and acoustic analyses, to characterize voice changes on a day-to-day basis throughout the menstrual cycle. Voice characteristics were measured from free speech as well as sustained vowels. In addition, we asked men to rate vocal attractiveness from selected samples. The free speech samples revealed marginally significant variation in F0 with an increase prior to and a distinct drop during ovulation. Overall variation throughout the cycle, however, precluded unequivocal identification of the period with the highest conception risk. The analysis of vowel samples revealed a significant increase in degree of unvoiceness and noise-to-harmonic ratio during menstruation, possibly related to an increase in tissue water content. Neither estrogen nor progestogen levels predicted the observed changes in acoustic characteristics. The perceptual experiments revealed a preference by males for voice samples recorded during the pre-ovulatory period compared to other periods in the cycle. While overall we confirm earlier findings in that women speak with a higher and more variable fundamental frequency just prior to ovulation, the present study highlights the importance of taking the full range of variation into account before drawing conclusions about the value of these cues for the detection of ovulation. 相似文献

How do humans perceive the passage of time and the duration of events without a dedicated sensory system for timing? Previous studies have demonstrated that when a stimulus changes over time, its duration is subjectively dilated, indicating that duration judgments are based on the number of changes within an interval. In this study, we tested predictions derived from three different accounts describing the relation between a changing stimulus and its subjective duration as either based on (1) the objective rate of changes of the stimulus, (2) the perceived saliency of the changes, or (3) the neural energy expended in processing the stimulus. We used visual stimuli flickering at different frequencies (4–166 Hz) to study how the number of changes affects subjective duration. To this end, we assessed the subjective duration of these stimuli and measured participants'' behavioral flicker fusion threshold (the highest frequency perceived as flicker), as well as their threshold for a frequency-specific neural response to the flicker using EEG. We found that only consciously perceived flicker dilated perceived duration, such that a 2 s long stimulus flickering at 4 Hz was perceived as lasting as long as a 2.7 s steady stimulus. This effect was most pronounced at the slowest flicker frequencies, at which participants reported the most consistent flicker perception. Flicker frequencies higher than the flicker fusion threshold did not affect perceived duration at all, even if they evoked a significant frequency-specific neural response. In sum, our findings indicate that time perception in the peri-second range is driven by the subjective saliency of the stimulus'' temporal features rather than the objective rate of stimulus changes or the neural response to the changes. 相似文献

Ultrasonic technology was applied for polysaccharide extraction from the leaves of Dodonaea viscosa and response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the effects of processing parameters on polysaccharide extraction yield. Three independent variables were extraction time (X1), extraction temperature (X2) and ultrasonic power (X3), respectively. The statistical analysis indicated the independent variables (X1, X2, X3), the quadratic terms (X11 and X33) and the interaction terms (X1X2, X1X3, X2X3) had significant effects on the yield of polysaccharides (P < 0.05). The optimal extraction conditions of D. viscosa leaf were determined as follows: extraction time 50.54 min, extraction temperature 85 °C and ultrasonic power 400 W. Under these conditions, the experimental yield of polysaccharides was 9.455 ± 0.24%, which was agreed closely with the predicted value (9.398%). The evaluation of anti-oxidant activity suggested that the polysaccharide exhibited significant protection against DPPH and hydroxyl radicals and could be explored as a nutraceutical agent. 相似文献

Poxviruses have evolved numerous mechanisms to evade host innate immunity. Sensory pathways that are activated by Toll-like and nucleotide receptors, as well as innate cell death pathways, are both targets of antagonism by viral proteins. Recent structural, biochemical and functional studies of poxvirus proteins have identified a family of α-helical proteins that adopt a Bcl-2 fold despite highly divergent polypeptide sequences from cellular proteins that regulate apoptosis. These newly identified proteins have assumed new roles in antagonism of NF-κB and interferon signaling pathways and interfere with the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Structures of isolated viral proteins and their complexes with cellular targets provide insight into the diverse ways that the Bcl-2 scaffold can be exploited for antagonism of host immunity. 相似文献
